Stutter During First 10 Minutes of Gameplay

Post » Thu Jan 14, 2016 1:43 am

Hello all,

I just recently started playing Fallout 4 on my PC and noticed that my game play stutters badly for about 5-10 minutes after the initial load of the game. After this time, the game is running at a fluid 30+ fps with no further issues.

This is frustrating for me because I have to wait at least 10 minutes when starting a game to get solid FPS to start actually playing and enjoying the game. From what I can find online, no one else is having this issue with their games. Most people see stuttering happen later in the game after it's been on for a while, which may indicate other issues such as overheating. I have also ruled out that this is not a power issue since I turned on maximum power settings and also have a powerful power supply.

My current setup is quad core i7, GeForce GTX 680 4GB, and 8GB RAM. There's no indication that it's a hardware issue to me since the game runs great after that initial stutter timeframe of about 10 minutes or so.

It should also be noted that I tried re-installing Fallout 4 onto a separate hard drive which is separate from my hard disk so I think I can rule out that this is a hard disk thrashing issue.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! It's frustrating when you only have an hour to play and you waste a half an hour trying to get it to run in a state that's acceptable.

Thanks,

Kyle

Post a dxdiag report, please.

Use the Search box or Run... box, type: cmd and press Enter.

In the command prompt, type:

dxdiag /t dxdiag.txt
and press Enter.

Now go to the %userprofile% directory (C:\User\), find the dxdiag.txt file. Open the file. Select All. Copy and Paste its contents here in a reply. Use the spoiler tags, by either using the following:

What does a clean boot do? http://www.thewindowsclub.com/what-is-clean-boot-state-in-windows

Delete the ini files here: C:\.............\Documents\My Games\Fallout4 Game will remake them.

SEtup Fallout4.exe and the launcher executable in your AV exceptions.

Using mods? Using Nvidia Streamer service? http://www.legitreviews.com/disabling-nvidia-streamer-service-gives-video-card-performance-boost_162524

Jasper, thanks for the reply to my post.

I haven't tried a clean boot, but not sure if that would solve my issue. I have deleted the INI files, but still similar issue going on.

I am not using mods either. I'm thinking it has to do with my CPU after waking from sleep that might be causing this.

If you think of anything else, please let me know.

Again thanks for the support!

You should never have a HDD with under 10% free space.

Where is your page file located?

Try updating your graphics drivers.

See, that's just strange.
My frames never drop below 60 FPS...
30 FPS is just unacceptable.
What have you done, where you're getting only 30 FPS? And how can you be happy with that?
I will help you get a solid 60 FPS like me, if you wish.

Also: for goodness sake, don't wake your rig from Sleep and play!
Always fresh-boot. There should be nothing running except Steam.

Níeh?ggr - I agree. This is actually a backup drive and is not the one I am using. C:\ is my OS drive and D:\ is the drive where the game files are installed.

What do you mean by page file?

I have updated my drivers to the latest NVIDIA release, but issue remains.

Gryphon - Thank you for wanting to help!

I should be clear. I didn't actually test my FPS, but since you brought that up I downloaded FRAPS and determined that when the stuttering is not occurring I am getting 60 FPS 90% of the time with drops around 52-55 FPS, so my setup handles the game pretty well in Ultra. The stuttering drops my FPS to about 11-15 for a few seconds and then goes back to 60 for another second before stuttering again. I'm not certain if it's a sleep-to-game issue or not. I actually waited about 30 minutes since I started up and it still happens. Repeated results have it stuttering the first time I play after starting my machine up and after those first 15 minutes of the gameplay being on before it disappears completely. Very strange.

Even if its a backup drive, I would still clean it. The system could be trying to index it and the free space makes that process difficult.

Where is the virtual memory swap file located? Make sure the paging file isn't active on that backup drive. By default, all drives have the paging file active.

My Setup. The D:\ (HDD) is the swap file. I disabled it on my SSD (C:\)

Níeh?ggr - I did both suggestions above, rebooted, and tried the game again. Initial tests show that the issue is completely resolved!

I don't have a lot of time to test this evening, but I will test it later tonight or tomorrow to confirm that this is eliminated.

I'll keep you posted.

I guess it's back to the drawing board...
