V.A.T.S Style Combat System

Post » Sat May 04, 2013 8:35 pm

"*Also the VATS interface only allows for attacks with the equiped weapon; Turn Based combat should allow for additional actions (including movement, non-combat actions and inventory access)."

"Imo I think using the mechanics from fo1 and fo2 in terms of combat with the V.A.T.S interface would be the best of both worlds."

I have pretty much said this.

Have you looked at the Turn Based Mods on the Nexus?

I'm semi-busy so i only glanced at it but it seems a bit disjointed if it was all within the v.a.t.s UI then it would be a little more cohesive.

They can't be expected to be perfect ~they are fan mods, and what you propose would be developer supported... Where in the fan mod the PC gets hit [from who knows, somebody off to his left somewhere], a developer version would probably use the VATS cam for all attacks by all involved ~~If they didn't... then it would seem to suffer the same problem as the fan mod; but if it did, then it would be mostly cutscenes in between a few mouse-clicks. I dunno. It seems like a flawed idea that sounds good in theory ~until attempted.

IMO it would be better to remove VATS entirely as the function of aiming in FO is now simply whereever the player points the weapon.

A better solution IMO would be to allow the player to pick TB combat either preferably at the start of the game ~~or during play as was done in FO:Tactics. Ideally it should be handled like HC mode in NV, as the Player can shut it off, but not re-enable it.

TB combat should be handled as implied by that image I linked in a post or two back. Wasteland 2 looks like a positively excellent [still in development] example of what FO3's combat should have been. [IMP  ]

**Notice that not all of the emotes work since the update.

"then it would be mostly cutscenes in between a few mouse-clicks"

replace cutscenes with altercations and you have just described a turn based game, what where you expecting?

And the mod was good i'm not bashing it but it obviously could of been improved upon.

Not non-stop kill-cams; there is a difference ~and it mostly comes from a change in perspective. In order to depict the events smoothly the player really needs to be looking down over the battlefield and see one move, then the next in easy sequence. Trying to do this in First person or third person VATS-Cam would result in a buzz-cut mess [of scene jumps to each opponent's action] that would probably irritate the viewer as well as sap the enjoyment out of the activity by making it difficult to see what's going on.

I didn't think it was that good, but I thought it was a good effort.

I would always be interested in a turnbased mode. But I'm way too drunk to open up your post and criticise it.

Yeah the kill cam thing is a good point i'll give you that, they could always be optional or removed altogether.

Am i right in saying you haven't played the originals because they are turn based?

If so you aren't the intended demographic, in the nicest possible way.

I have played the originals. I am assuming he means taking something like Fallout 3 then somehow adding turned based combat into that. I don't want to play XCOM, I rather Bethesda's interpretation of combat in Fallout 3's environment. If Fallout 1 and 2 were remade, I would want turn based combat but that is if the camera view is pretty much the same. Generally, I would rather a Bethesda's interpreted 1st/3rd person combat game every once and awhile. Lets say Bethesda and Obsidian both were making Fallout games at the same time. I would be quite disappointed if Bethesda chose to do turned based combat but I would be okay if Obsidian did it. I hope I make some sort of sense.

No. I don't want Bethesda to change that design of their games, while I do like a turn-based game (if done correctly). I would like Bethesda to fill that gap while another, such as Obsidian would make a turn-based game instead. I also generally don't think turned based would work with the engine, or capture what Bethesda wants their community to capture via turn-based combat.

I think it would work beautifully with the engine; It would just need a repositioned camera; *and that would impose the need to alter interior plenum space to allow a less obstructed view. [Significant extra work; but I'd certainly appreciate it.]

I'm sure i suggested it to be optional in the OP, and I agree with gizmo in syaing that it could work well with the engine i'd even say that the camera in 1st or 3rd person would be ok for TB combat
