FO:NV Style hardcoe Mode as DLC?

Post » Mon Dec 12, 2011 3:29 am

I really like ES5 Skyrim, its a fantastic realised game world. But in a way it feels like its lacking something after I have spent so much time playing Fallout New Vegas. And that is the optional hardcoe mode which shipped with that game and added additional features to the game-play like thirst, hunger and sleep requirements etc.

I understand that having to manage how much our characters eat and drink, or maintain equipment isn't everyone's cup of tea, but for some of us that like the extra depth and challenge of survival, it can really add a lot to the experience. So I was wondering how many other gamers would love to see an optional hardcoe / Survival mode included in any upcoming DLC, that could perhaps give some usefulness to looting food and cooking, and also add a maintenance aspect to weapons and armour and perhaps even remove or reduce health regeneration?

PS. Waiting on modders isn't really an option for everyone, since many of us are ex PC gamers playing on console, and miss the depth.

There is a huge lack of water sources, they'd need to add in quite a lot of water bottle things and also let you drink from the river.

I wouldn't use it either way, so it's a no thanks for me.

definitely. should be easy since everything is available except for water bottles, which isn't a big deal. Just use the same model as wine bottles and have them randomly generated in the world.

health regeneration could be linked to hunger levels. that would make sense.

A definite yes to the food/drink mode. Food is already in the game anyway.

Not sure about the weapon degradation since not every character wants to level blacksmith, whereas in Fallout they did.
Could always use the town smithy though.

You mean it was possible to actually play outside the hardcoe mod in New Vegas ?
That's a weird idea :P

^ Ha. So true. I don't think I ever played it without. :D

With all that snow around?

Anyway I didn't mean it should be exactly like the FO:NV mode. Keeping hydrated isn't really an issue in Skyrim as long as you can start a fire and boil some snow, but I think some of the other survivalist ideas like hunger, maintaining gear, sleeping and health that doesn't regenerate so aggressively would be great for a DLC add-on. As Proper_Gander mentioned earlier, hunger levels could be linked to health regen in some way. And it would give a lot more reason to pick up some of that food laying around and do some cooking, which lets face it, is a bit of a waste of time packing that stuff just to cook some minor health / stamina restorative items that are practically useless past level 20. Looting food really just takes up valuable inventory space that would be better utilised for carrying more expensive items for sale.

I liked the idea for Fallout since it is basically geared toward survival, but for the TES...thats sort of a non issue. I suppose it would make sense, but its not a survival oriented game to begin with, and keeping hydrated and well fed would also be a none issue with all the game running about in the world.

Maybe they should add hypothermia while they're at it. Jump in a river and get wet? Better find a way to warm yourself before hypothermia sets in. Wearing armor that leaves a lot of skin showing? Gonna freeze if you're not careful. Need to be careful going out at night when temperatures drop to sub-zero.

It was kinda a non-issue in New Vegas, too. Food and water was plentiful. Sure, it was often radioactive, but if it became a problem you just had to give a handful of bottle caps (also plentiful) to a doctor and your problem is solved. I heard it aptly called the tamagachi mode, once.

I only used it for it's affects on ammo weights and it's affects on healing. Skyrim could use some ammo weights, but with magic and no locational damage, the healing affects wouldn't be much of an issue, either.

Ddfinitely like that Idea. I'm planning on playing this game for years to come like I did oblivion. Anything they add to expand the game play i'm with it.

I agree with the whole cooking thing and needing to eat: I posted such a poll earlier today, see http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1296435-cooking-somehow-incomplete/

When you say non-issue due to lots of wildlife, I hear, 'cool that would actually put an emphasis on hunting.' :D

I remember some old school 8bit / 16bit western CRPG's and how they used to have mechanics like hunger and tiredness and how it made our characters feel like a part of the world. I guess FO:NV just reminded me of the good ol days of role playing. :)
