Subscription prices.... again?

Post » Tue Mar 18, 2014 9:28 am

This question is for all those who agree ESO ought to remain subscription based. I do too.

However I have to admit that I very much dislike the $15 per month fee, even while I'd be perfectly fine with a $10 per month rate (month-to-month). And say $50 for 6 months or $80 paid yearly. Many of us prefer month-to-month given that some months we may not have much time to play.

I think that $10 ($9.95) per month is also a good price point to attract many more monthly paying customers, who will be willing to KEEP paying, or keep a recurring month-to-month subscription going even while not playing much. I pay $8 per month for Netflix streaming service. And there are months where I just don't watch it much (if at all). Still I don't cancel the subscription. If I was paying $15 per month for Netflix you can be dam* sure I WOULD cancel it when I felt I wasn't using it enough. And then... I might not resubscribe for a long while.

If I'm not going to be getting enough play time in for ESO, I'm most assuredly going to cancel a $15 per month subscription, whereas I would very likely let a $9.95 per month subscription fee carry on indefinitely, even if only playing 5-6 hours per month.

I don't know about anyone else but $10 seems to be my break point for a lot of things. Under $10 and I'm a very easy sell. Over $10 and it's much harder to get me to crack the wallet.

There will be discounts for buying a bulk.

We just don't know the exact numbers yet.

With any luck, you'll get your 10$ per month if you buy a year or something.

Yes, well again I can see myself (and A LOT of other people) paying $10 per month, even during months where I might not log in much at all, while on the other hand, I would not pay $120 up front for for one year of play time. I might consider paying up to $80 up front for a year's subscription, but would still likely just pay a recurring $10 per month rate and let it slide just as I do Netflix even when I'm not watching it much.

I pay nearly $15 to see a movie. I have to drive to get there and back (about $10 worth of gas) which elevates the price to $25 for 90 to 120 minutes of entertainment (180 if I'm going to see a Peter Jackson film). That works out to approximately 14 cents per minute of entertainment, and I never complain about that.

Even the most casual MMO player is going to play at least 4 hours per week. There are 4.3 weeks in an average month, for a total of approximately 17.2 hours (even longer than a Peter Jackson film) or 1032 minutes. That is 1.5 cents per minute of entertainment. Not 15 cents, one point five. Now, if you think that 1.5 cents per minute is too steep, then a f2p format is likely more suitable for you. Playing ESO is 1/10 the price of going to see a movie! I will gladly give them my $15 every month and never once gripe.

Just some other statistics, for the daily coffee drinkers you're spending approximately $40 per month if you buy one each day on work days. Are you a smoker? Pack a day habit? Here in Canada that would be roughly $200 per month to maintain (I'm glad I don't smoke). There are 3 shows per year that you like to watch on HBO but have to order some crazy package full of channels you never watch? I think you get the idea where I'm going with this.

I have to wonder how utterly frugal someone has to be that they would cancel a membership over a difference of $5, regardless of their enjoyment of the game. $5 a month, I spend more than that on toilet paper.

$15 is fine by me. I work full time and have four units this trimester at uni (via distance), so I don't exactly have all the time in the world, but $15 is less than I spend on coffee most weeks. Even if I only get 3 hours of entertainment from it in a month, that's still a pretty cheap source of entertainment. If they offer a discount for multiple months I'll take it just so I don't have to worry about it for a while.

I voted 5 because it's the cheapest option on the poll. but I think 15 is a fair price. I would not play the game if it were free to play.

I'm fine with $15 a month, but I wouldn't mind seeing some lower price points with limited time per month that could very well hook a lot more casuals.

In the end this and every other new P2P MMO competes with WoW and just like all the rest it won't be perfect and won't offer as much as WoW for the same price, something that makes it a little more palatable to those who won't play much could help to keep it away from the seemingly inevitable transition to F2P.

14.99 pretty much the industry standard for more than 10 years now, if we could only have the price of gasoline the same as it was ten yeare ago.. LOL

Trust me, nobody is doing cost anolysis comparing how much they might spend to go see a movie or buy coffee, to how much they are paying for a subscription to something.

There is a psychology to these things. For me (and I would assume others, but maybe Zenimax has better data on this than I), I am willing to let a less than $10 per month subscription fee go on indefinitely, despite periods where I may not play much and realize I won't have that much time to play if at all. However I absolutely would cancel a $15 per month subscription. Now... that lack of any ability to log in and play AT ALL is likely to result in my never renewing the subscription, whereas being able to log in on occasion, or just knowing that I could, is likely to keep me from even canceling in the first place for a $10 per month or less subscription fee.

Hard core players who will be playing this game 40 hours a week, will most certainly pay $15 per month and probably more. But I don't think ESO can survive on those players alone. They are going to need A LOT of the casual players, Elder Scrolls franchise fans, who aren't hardcoe balls-to-wall MMO players. For those casual players, ESO needs to play into the psychology of what is the subscription fee break point where someone will retain a subscription verses cancel, even if they don't feel they are getting their money's worth from their play time.

indeed, I pay the same sub fee for MMO now as I did 8 years ago. Given inflation, the price actually gone down.

Strongly disagree with that statement. If you are talking pure quantity, then sure, you're correct. But I'm thinking quality of quantity here, and ESO has that hands down. Even the fact that it's NEW and not the same old repetitive BS that Blizzard has been ramming down our throats the past few years is a great selling point. ESO has plenty to offer that WoW simply doesn't for many of us. And, cmon, seriously, it's Elder Scrolls!

$14.99 is a 10 year old standard for an industry that has been rapidly moving toward Free-To-Play with cash shop.

One wonders why have they gone that route instead of trying some lower month-to-month price points.... like $10 per month.

When I stopped playing WoW very much. I cancelled my subscription almost immediately. However had I been paying $9.95 per month, heck I might STILL have a subscription with them, and I quit playing over 2 years ago! (Of course I would have logged in periodically and played from time-to-time with an on going subscription).

I think 15$ is a fair price for a monthly subscription. However, I voted $5; the lack of some things and the poor implementation of others are dropping the price for me.

15 has been the standard for most P2P MMO's for quite some time.....I count myself fortunate to not have to pay 20-25 nowadays.
