To subtitle or not to subtitle...

Post » Tue Aug 23, 2011 7:02 am

I can't decide what I'm going to do for Skyrim. I'm honestly an ES newbie but have pretty much watched a full playthrough of Oblivion on Youtube -- with subtitles. I did find myself reading the text faster than it was spoken.

I'm just wondering what veterans will do with Skyrim to make it the most immersive...

I never play any games with subtitles. Text at the bottom of the screen is a wonderful way to ruin immersion.

Without subtitles makes it more... real for me I guess.

I reversed the subtitle options actually. there are no subtitles during conversations, but since background conversations can be hard tp hear sometimes I have general dialouge on

I always play games with subtitles. Don't know why, I just like it. Might be because I play at low volumes often and I prefer knowing what's going on.

More immersive? Most HUD turned off and a mod that makes necessary HUD small and out of the way. Personally, I prefer understanding what npcs are saying all of the time rather than having to play the game with the volume turned up.

No subtitles is the way to go. But I guess I'm also a slow reader.

On my first playthrough in Oblivion I listened intently to what the NPC had to say. But after my first playthrough I just started graying out all the dialogue options as fast as possible and just checked my journal when i wanted to know what they had talked about. If they didn't have a quest I would just not talk to them at all, simple.

Full subtitles, always have used them ever since I was a little kid, I found it was more time effective to read the subtitles faster than they are speaking then wait for the NPC to talk so I can go an kill stuff quicker :D

I always use subtitles because it can be hard to hear what they are saying and reading it seems to sink in better for some reason.

I always go with the subtitles. Doesn't bother me in the slightest.

In fact I find it strange when a game doesn't have subtitles.

is stupid but i find that reading a text opens up my imagination even if its simple directions. I am able to understand the lore better and whats going on. Games without subtitles are some times a game breaker as my ears are a third of the size they should be (i hear stuff fine but i can miss out on important information if its said in a battle or if there is alot of other noise going on as it can be hard to distinguish certain sounds and understand them properly)

When there are subtitles I am always forced to read them, I just can't not read them. So with the new system in Skyrim I will disable them. Make it more realistic.

That made me laugh, but its as true an answer as possible for this kind of quesion :goodjob:

:sadvaultboy: Thanks! For making me feel old. :sadvaultboy: In my day we didn't have options for subtitles or not, we had walls of text to let us know what was going on and we liked it.
