Is succession equal for males and females?

Post » Mon Aug 05, 2013 3:30 am

Hello,

Considering that female characters hold high ranking positions in almost equal numbers to men (There are 3 female Jarls, and Legate Rikke is the highest ranking Nord in the imperial legion), I had always assumed that succession in TES to thrones was equal for males and females, and based only on age. However, I was reading through UESP and a note a contributor had made was that an explanation for Tiber's grandson taking the throne of the third empire was because Tiber had all daughters. But why should this matter?

Can anyone shed light on this?

I guess positions of power are available equally for women and men, but matters of succession probably favor males

How do they know Tiber had only daughters? The Real Barenziah specifically mentions a son.

My guess is that Tiber's children died before him - or maybe women could inherit the throne only if there were no living male heirs, like in some real world monarchies even today.

It was an assumption based on real-world monarchies favouring males (though here in the UK it has changed to equal succession), but that logic doesn't seem to fit in the universe of TES. If women can do everything else on an equal basis, why did the culture of agnatic-cognatic succession develop? The first human empire was started by a female, Alessia, so why would succession favour males. If this is something a writer has put into the lore it should be circumvented.
