Such a shame the best looking sword is the Iron

I also agree. And I feel the same way about Oblivion's swords too. My favorite swords in Oblivion are the iron swords.

I think it's you with the lack of historical knowledge. You'd be hard pressed to find anything nearly as ridiculous as daedric or ebony at any point in history.

Furthermore the majority of armies were made up by "poor peasants" while rich combatants would use weapons like http://www.medievalswords.ws/medieval-long-sword.jpg http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20110510211017/nazizombiesplus/images/c/c3/Katana.jpg or http://thomaschen.freewebspace.com/images/xxsulei.jpg (to mention a few); elegant yes but still very practical, certainly nothing like TES swords which look like crappy props made by LARP-ers.

Lastly the Iron Sword is IIRC based off a Nordic design, so it's the most historically accurate in the game.

OP: If you want cool and historically-accurate weapons then play Mount & Blade, not TES.

If you want you can practically just fortify smithing to a point and improve your iron sword to be better quality than, say a Daedric sword and stick with it.

Irony, on the other hand, is always great fun.

The weapons of the third era mod (which is also included as part of the Immersive Weapons pack) has, I feel, a great balance between practical functionality and 'fantasy game aesthetics', and includes functional looking swords for all of the smithing material types. It's easily at the top of my 'must have' mods list.

no I have studied History at a University level, as I said in an earlier post, with the exception of Orcish and Daedric, all craft-able sword designs are based in part off actual swords IRL..

and by poor peasants, I meant those who were not actual soldiers or combatants.. Many Kingdoms and Empires would outfit their Soldiers with the best they could afford..

Miraaks sword doesn't even look like a sword but something out of resident evil.

It's called Miraak's Sword so I think it is a Sword, or is it a bow... I can't remember.

I like the imperial sword, probably for similar reasons to why you like the iron sword, and yeah it kind of svcked trying to stick with it on my 1 hander as he lvld up and up, it soon started feeling like hunting elephants with a nerf gun.

Somehow I don't have a problem with the fantastical warhammers and battleaxes, my favourite battle axe is orcish, my favourite warhammer is elven, at least until I get a dragonbone warhammer (which is the absolute best weapon in any game, ever). It's so annoying I have to wait so long and level up and advance so much just to get a big bone to bash people with.

The OP isn't far off; while I disagree that the iron sword is the most realistic looking, it is one of the most realistic looking, and were it not for the lack of a proper scabbard, I'd seriously consider lolsmithing one to uber-legendary status. Well, lack of a proper scabbard and lack of a proper leather wrapping for the grip; weapons without proper grips are a detail that irks me.

But, it's TES. There are supposed to be fantasy-style swords as well as realistic ones. At least there aren't surfboard swords like in some of the Final Fantasy games, or WoW. That would be beyond the pale.

For myself, I prefer (Skyforge) Steel or Nord Hero over iron, but I kept the iron sword I took from Helgen. Currently, it hangs on a plaque in Breezehome.

The ebony one handed sword is my weapon of choice. It's looks cool and I never get tired of the guards saying that it looks like a sliver of midnight.

I like the ebony greatsword actually, it looks like a big eel suffering from riggamortis, which I funnily enough think is cool.

The Imperial sword, Blades katana and the scimitar are the best-looking, imo. Iron swords have rods for hilts, and steel swords look like someone doesn't know how to properly smith blades.

I can't really say anything negative about the swords in this game, with the exception of the Silver Sword which was a lazy Iron Sword paint job instead of the cool looking version from Oblivion.

I personally love Ebony and Daedric Swords, although none of the weapons in Skyrim can come close to Umbra.

I love the look of and damage output of a Daedric sword. As a secondary, I choose the Imperial sword. Being in the Imperial Legion, it is my direct line to ancient Rome, since it's a copy of the Gladius Hispaniensis.

I actually like Iron, Steel, and Imperial swords. I to prefer realistic stuff.

Imperial, Hold Guard, Steel, Iron, Banded Iron, Steel Plated, Leather, Fur, and Hide armor all look good and it's the only stuff I wear. Specials I wear is maybe Dark Brotherhood, Thieve's Guild, and Wolf Armor.

Leave that fancy elven stuff to the elves.

I dislike Daedric, Glass, and all that mess. I like the typical medieval warrior/knight type of thing.

I also do not use magic and it almost ruins the game for me.
