Suddenly "Fallout 4 Has Stopped Working"

Post » Thu Jan 28, 2016 7:18 pm

I have played over 500 hours with no trouble. Suddenly this morning when I click Play I get an error message "Fallout 4 Has Stopped Working."

I have looked for solutions but nothing has worked so far. Any clues?

Corrupted saves? Rename the save folder.

I would also verify integrity of game cache in steam.

Would I lose all my saves if that were the case?

  • From the Library section, right-click on the game and select Properties from the menu.

  • Select the Local files tab and click the Verify integrity of game cache.

  • It may take several minutes to complete.

  • Once it is done, it will have downloaded a corrupted/missing file. If nothing is corrupted or missing, it will say "All files successfully validated".

As for the saved games right now it's hard to say, Steam does use cloud backup.

Also when you open the game is it the screen before the game launches or when you chose continue in the game menu?

Thanks, I will check it out later when I get home. As for which screen, it is what I would call the launch screen, with the power armor helm and PLAY as the top option.

The only thing that changed, possibly, is that I unplugged my laptop from its base and external monitor to bring to work. It is the first time I have done that since I got the game. I will also check that out when I get home.

No, u will not lose your saves. The game will create a new save folder. If everything is okay u can transfer ur saves from the renamed folder to the new save folder and in the process, identify the corrupted save file.

That sounds like a issue with the game launcher, I doubt that your saves have been effected.

I do recommend making a backup copy of your saves, before you try to change anything here just to be safe. In general you should backup yours saves you don't want to suddenly end up with a corrupted save and lose that many hours.

The saves are under C:\Username\Documents\My Games

Here is another potential fix that you can try if mine, or langnao's previous suggestions don't fix the issue.

  • Try deleting Fallout4.exe and Fallout4Lancher.exe under C:\Steam\steamapps\common\Fallout 4

  • Then run verify integrity of game cache again it will download both of the .exe files again. (Note this will cause your video setting will reset)

  • Then try the game again, just don't forget about backing up your saves first.
