Suggest me essential -- must have mods

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 10:10 am

Okay, well let me say I have played Oblivion a few times without mods and I always ended up getting sick of the game, mainly due to the leveling system, which I downloaded a mod for. Other than this mod, I am looking for some essential mods that everyone should have. I will list below a few things I either want and//or don't want. Just try to stay in the guidelines and don't go too overboard . Also, feel free to list something I don't have listed, as long as it is not below the second section. The first is just a list of stuff I would really love to have in the game.

:: What I am looking for ::

:: Environment mods which make the game look nicer.

:: Customization mods which add more options for making your character [not races, but like more hair, eye colors, etc]

:: NPC mods which either -- change behaviour, change look [such as mixing up peoples facial features, hair, etc, to help make people look a little more unique], combat AI among other things you think are useful.

:: Spell mods -- This refers to a mod which makes spell casting not gay. I remember it being impossible to play a Mage, and I would like to try one out

:: Content mods -- Preferably known good ones which are fully complete. Ranging from good quests, to nicely created villages // cities // encampments [nice small encampments would be EXCELLENT] // more armour, weapons and other stuff. Just list stuff you think might fall under this :)

:: Realism mods -- NOT DIFFICULTY MODS -- I wouldn't mind having mods for like, requiring myself to eat and drink or I die.

:: Companion or Follower mods

:: Possible 'romance' type mod -- I enjoy the choice to marry and then kill my spouse [cough]. -- I don't suspect this exists, lol.

:: Anything else I haven't listed that you might think I would want -- Do not list anything I put under the 'No No's' section

Thinks I don't want -- The No No's

:: No difficulty mods. I'm not a masochistic gamer. I like to play for casual fun.

:: No unbalancing mods. I don't want super powered mods, they drive me NUTs and bore me.

Well, go nuts! Hoping I can get some awesome mods :)

Environment mods: http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=18498 is good if you have a powerful computer. http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=16513 and Unique Landscapes make the game look sooo much nicer, not graphically, but content wise. Also, look up All Natural.

Customization mods: http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=5175 gives a lot more hairs and eye colors.

NPC Mods: http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=8273 also gives NPCs a challenge to fight, as they can dodge and shield bash you.

Spell Mods: http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=12466 and/or http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=9562

Realism Mods: Look up Real Hunger, Real Thirst and Real Sleep on the Nexus.

Companion Mods: Look http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/cat.php?id=66 for non-CM partners Companions and http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=7819 for CM Partners

Don't know of any companions that you can actually marry. And if there are, they are probably essential.

Meh... at least you were specific.

Mods requireing OBGE seem to be the best these days. Some good ones are: Liquid water, illumination withen, Immersive Interiors, Really Textured Normal Maps for Vanilla, etc.
Probably want a weather mod too andsuch, but I'm really not very knowledgeable when it comesto graphical stuff

Race Balancing Project

RBP again for the visual aspect... Some Duke Patrick mods improve the AI reactions of NPCs.

Midas Magic, Fearsome Magicka, Less annoying magic experience, conduit magic, chargeable spells, audacious magery, etc. there's really a lot of them but those are pretty much the main ones I use.

As seen bellow in the spoilered part:
My favorite quests are:

http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=6855
Ihttp://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=19591

Maybe check the Immersion, and roleplay lists onthe lists of lists... another area I rarely dabbled in is the fatigue/eat/sleep type stuff.

Vilja and most of Simyaz's quest mods. That companions in simyaz mods might not have all the snazzy features of newer companions, but the story and characters are great.

Integration: The Stranded Light has the best romance.... and it's not even the main focus of the mod. Romancing of Eyja is okay, Simyaz mods usually have some small romance sub plot, There is a houswives modwhere you pick up a NPC at a bar and then you have a NPC with only "rumors" living in your house which is kind of lame, there's also some others but I found those romances a bit forced, rushed, and not belivable.

quests....
Integration: The Stranded Light
Kragenier's
Dark brotherhood renewed
northern front
golden coast
Nehrim( total conversion really)
Also everything on the TOQL (Google: "TOQL")

Why do you want Warlocks? If you want to kill them that's fine, but if it's for the whole magical/scholar type theme you want your character to have then The Lost Spires wouldn't make for a good fit seeing as how it kind of forces you into the role of "brain dead grunt."

As for armor/items check the leveled list topic http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1167983-list-integrated-items/.

Thanks a bunch for the replies. I'll spend the next hour or so looking these over and selecting which to install. This definitely touch most of what I am looking for.

Spell Mods: http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=12466 and/or http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=9562
Also consider my http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=34735 mod. It is of course not a spell mod, but it allows you to do the following with spells:
1. Have one bound to a hotkey as an Auto Cast spell. When tapping the hotkey, the spell is cast directly without becoming selected (thus letting you keep your attack spell of choice selected). Great for defensive spells or conjuration spells.
2. Have multiple spells bound to one hotkey as Multicast. Same as above, except that all of the spells are cast in sequence, still without chancing you current spell. You can add a restore health (or any other) multiple times to such a hotkey, which will make it being cast multiple times by one tap
3. Have multiple spells bound to one hotkey as a cycler. One tap of the hotkey selects the first spell, the second tap the second, and so on.

The mod also lets you have up to 40 (instead of the vanilla 8) hotkeys, including mouse buttons - and multiple "wheels" selected by modifier keys for a possible total of 160 hotkeys, and of course have similar treatment of non-spell items.

Realism Mods: Look up Real Hunger, Real Thirst and Real Sleep on the Nexus.
Make sure to grab the OBSE versions of RH and RT, and the Extended version of RS.

As for anything else you might want - IMHO, I could play without many mods that I like, but I could really not play without a number of the Gameplay tweak mods - mods that enhance the gameplay or user interface or both. Mods like:
Realistic Leveling (though nGCD or Oblivion XP are good alternatives) - makes the leveling natural and sound, and not the gamey concept it is now
Realistc Fatigue - makes encumbrance and fatigue really matters
Progress - let you easily control the speed of skill leveling
Togglable Quantity Prompt (updated version) - let you sell a single item or all items of a stack, without having to select amount or confirming the trade for each transaction
Darnified UI - makes the user interface look good
Really AEVWD + TES4LODGen - makes distant houses, ruins, forts, etc. visible from afar, instead of just popping up from nowhere when you get near. Unlike the others, it must be used with caution since a full install may mangle your framerate
...and some of my own, like:
Map Marker Overhaul - lets you add tags like [done], [strong enemy] or whatever you want to map markers, lets you add your own freely named markers wherever you want, and lots of other things.
Enhanced Economy - makes the economic game a bit more immersive and interesting and lets you control how fast you become rich
HUD Status Bars - adds a few more interesting status bars (like weapon charge for enchanted weapons, a correct encumbrance bar, etc.) and lets you easily add new bars for whatever you want
Display Stats - makes the small popup that displays things like armor rating or weapon damage, also display all the hidden stats
Soulgem Magic - either prevents large soulgems from accepting small souls, or lets a large soulgem accept multiple small souls to eventually become one large - to avoid vasting a large soulgem when you kill a rat

Follow the link in my signature for easy access to my mods...

:: Environment mods which make the game look nicer.

Unique Landscapes and All Natural - Weather.

:: Customization mods which add more options for making your character [not races, but like more hair, eye colors, etc]

Race Balancing Project adds a ton of eyes and hairs (along with a few new races). If you don't want your races and birthsigns rebalanced (I didn't, but finally tried it and it's not as extreme as it sounds), COBL also comes with a "races" plugin that also adds a lot of hair/eye options, although it didn't seem like quite as many as RBP.

And speaking of COBL, I'd recommend installing it even if you aren't going to use the races plugin. It does good things for alchemy ingredients and is used as infrastructure by several other mods.

:: NPC mods which either -- change behaviour, change look [such as mixing up peoples facial features, hair, etc, to help make people look a little more unique], combat AI among other things you think are useful.

RBP and COBL both have appearance plugins to give NPCs their new hair/eye options. I don't have any good recommendations for AI mods off the top of my head.

:: Spell mods -- This refers to a mod which makes spell casting not gay. I remember it being impossible to play a Mage, and I would like to try one out

LAME (Less Annoying Magic Experience) and Supreme Magicka are the way to go for reforming the default magic system. If you want to step outside the vanilla system's model, there are several other options that should be more-or-less compatible with each other:

- Midas Magic is an interesting variation and has a lot of fun spells. It's also extremely popular, although I, personally, don't like it.

- Fizzle, Chargeable Spells, and Sorcerys Toll make spellcasting a bit more unpredictable and/or dangerous.

:: Realism mods -- NOT DIFFICULTY MODS -- I wouldn't mind having mods for like, requiring myself to eat and drink or I die.

Aside from the Real Hunger/Thirst/Sleep trio, you should also take a look at Basic Primary Needs.

:: Companion or Follower mods

:: Possible 'romance' type mod -- I enjoy the choice to marry and then kill my spouse [cough]. -- I don't suspect this exists, lol.

Although it doesn't include an explicit "romance" component, Companion Vilja is pretty much the companion mod, IMO, and she does grow to be quite fond of your character.

:: Anything else I haven't listed that you might think I would want -- Do not list anything I put under the 'No No's' section

- You haven't stated an opinion on the vanilla trade mechanics, but Enhanced Economy is the way to go if you want merchants to have a realistic pool of funds which grows when someone buys from them and shrinks when they buy your stuff instead of "infinite gold, but no more than X at a time".

- HUD Status bars is a must, especially if you're using eat/drink/sleep-type mods.

Not used any of them but Integration has a romance quest line that ends up in the possibility of marriage and Viconia as well AFAIK. The Romance of Eyja comes close but no actual marriage.

If you would enjoy diversifying NPCs so that they all pretty much have unique clothes, I use http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=36150 and http://www.gamesas.com/?showtopic=1053707. You'll need to use Bash to get them to work nicely together, though.

Make sure to grab the OBSE versions of RH and RT, and the Extended version of RS.

There an OBSE version of RH? I currently use RH Cobl v1.61, it doesn't mention anything about OBSE though. I know FF_RT / Cobl uses OBSE though.

Could you post a link to the OBSEfied RH?

Shameless self-promotion plug:
SDR - Sneaking / Detection Recalibrated

Massive rewrite of just about every aspect of stealth. It's more realistic, immersive, and you can scale the difficulty in many ways. Links are in my signature.
