You'll be hard-pressed to find a good MMO that doesn't svck away your life. That's kinda what they're designed to do.

My cousins play League of Legends... I'm never devoting a single minute of my life into an MMO ever again.

Runescape, and I mean that seriously. There are 25 skills, of which 18 are non combat, (16 available to free players, of which 10 are non combat). Progression is far slower than in other MMOs, to reach the combat cap it would take atleast 150 days of gameplay, to entirely max, well over a year of gameplay time. It doesn't rely on this irritating actionbar mechanic, rather a more classical turn-based RPG element, involving pre-preparation rather than dynamic tactics. The quests are also brilliant, compared to the usual quests to level system, Runescape takes quests seriously, there are 174 quests (only 20 are free), each of which has a distinct and full story line, once again nearer to quests in tradition single player RPGs. The longer members quests can take 5 hours+ without guides, shortest quests 30 minutes or so. The game is also less forgiving, combat is quite easy, but there isn't room for error, and if you do die you're risking your equipment and carried items rather than a set respawn charge, as a result one nasty death can wipe out your bank. Frankly, I've always thought runescape was a very good game, atleast a very good game once you are past the early grind and start to understand the depth of the mechanics. Also when you get yourself out of the free worlds, but at the low monthly price, that's not very hard.

I have to agree, it's a great game with plenty of activities. There are, admittedly a lot of idiots in the community, which has only worsened since they brought back the old style of PvP and free trade, but as long as you find yourself a decent clan, something made easier by the recent clan updates, you'll be fine.

Get Guild Wars. You can get the trilogy (they aren't expansions, just different intertwined campaigns) for $40, there's also the expansion, Eye of the North, I'd recommend that if you plan on getting Guild Wars 2 (should come out late this year or 2012.)

The trilogy is only $30 on Steam, the eye of the north is another $30. I heard the Faction is the only one you must have, so the Trilogy should be enough.

I don't know if it fits your graphical needs, but if you liked RO, it actually became free recently.

The only one I can really suggest is WoW. The only one I have ever played. That being said, I only started playing about 2 months ago. Doesn't really fit with the realistic aesthetics you were looking for though.

I'm pretty sure by "paying" the OP means he doesn't want a game where developers put actual gear in cash shops, opposed to things like power-ups, mounts, things that generally make life easier and convenient, opposed to straight up cash-for-gear. That's relatively impossible to do, but I can see the logic behind it and personally would prefer that, though can't find anything like it.

Oh ok, I thought he meant stuff like experience points, more money ingame, stuff like that. Thanks for the clarification!

I'm just going to suggest one I didn't see mentioned here. http://pandorasaga.atlusonline.com/, a good Final Fantasy alternative.

Lineage 2 (If you can pass the whole Fanservice thing with the Female characters, it worth the money)

Another interesting one to look at is Istaria.

+You can have an unlimited -human- character for free (you can create other races but will be requested politely to delete them if you are on a free account).
+There is no cash shop.
+You can pick up and level all of the 25+ http://istaria.wikia.com/wiki/Schools (classes). You could max them all with enough time spent. 2x the level of the skill to keep a skill for use between schools, so a level 8 cleric can keep level 4 skills, even as an Elemental Archer. Leveling up many -different- schools increases Adventure Rating (increasing exp required to level -all- schools), so early on it can be better to focus on a few rather than a great many. Leveling up many *crafting* schools, however, has no downside, and is in fact encouraged since they actually boost your statistics, which can help out in combat!
+There is an in-depth crafting system, it's a very key feature of the game, and probably one of the best I've seen.
+There was an update to add more low-to-mid level quests at some point, so plenty to do.
+Active RP server, if you're into that.
+(Not free account) Playable dragon and specific dragon schools. Eventually, flight - loooong quest to obtain that, though :)
+Devs listen, and respond, to the community through the forums.

-As free account, can't play as other races. However, you can do everything they can do, except some specific-to-dragon schools.
-As free account, can't own a plot. This isn't important until you have higher-level crafting, and still not important if you get in a good guild - they tend to leave some extra storage silos open for people to share (---for crafting. There are normal storage vaults in towns).
-No pvp (this is explained in the lore).
-Smaller population, but many willing to help.
-Need to run a bit, a few specific locations are no longer bound automatically for teleportation.

If you *do* decide to try it out:
*I recommend getting the Map Pack 3.5 (this and more are found on the official Istaria forum under Player Customizations).
*Investing in a Standard Sandstone Cargo Disk (craft level 5 or 10) is also recommended - it makes crafting much more enjoyable by being able to carry a lot more resources! There's usually a few cheap at the auctioneer.

If you don't try it out, well...best of luck on you search!

I will recommend http://pwi.perfectworld.com/ then. I don't play the game as of February but I did play for two years, so I'll give some pros and cons and it couldn't hurt to try it out.

Pros:
- It's free.
- Cash shop options where player buys zen, converts to in-game cash shop currency of gold/silver. Other players can buy gold/silver with in-game coins. Therefore, there's a connection between in-game currency and cash shop currency where you can buy cash shop stuff without paying real money.
- Decent graphics, high customisation, the latter of which I think is one of the biggest draws to this game.
- 5 races, 10 classes, just had an expansion released.
- High emphasis on group play, and a few classes can solo quite a bit too.
- Dungeons that give bonus reputation to others for helping you do certain quests you need if you want to progress with certain quest lines.
- If you're good with economics and the art of trade, it's very easy to make a killing with coin and be successful in this one niche.
- Lots of PVP options. PVP and PVE servers -- but even the PVE servers have optional PVP which there's plenty of players engaged in.
- Virtually zero bots. I see videos on Youtube of players with working bots playing PWI, but herbing in the newbie areas where bots would be most prevalent, I never see them. There's little incentive to bot when it's easy as hell to level, and there's a direct link between cash shop and in-game currency that nullifies their black market.
- Daily group quests that a huge population participates in.

Cons:
- Group play has been slightly diminished. The old "FB" dungeons are rarely run anymore for reputation, and most of the map (which is huge) you won't see as many people on as before. Most spend their time in a few specific XP or gear farming instances and not outside.
- Power leveling is insanely common now, even though you can certainly level fast enough without it.
- Handfuls of bugs, some of which have not been fixed for over two years.
- The way the game was developed and the cash shop has it so people with higher attacks per second rule PVE, and playing something other than a healer or an APS class means you won't be invited to many endgame instances that involve single targets or bosses. Ironic that in AOE instances the classes that mostly aren't picked for most PVE instances are wanted in AOE instances that don't yield nearly as good of coin and gear but are needed for common quests.

Other things:
- While cash shoppers can get insane decked out gear faster (some spend upwards of three to five figures on this game), you can get it too without any money spent at all by merchanting and farming.
- There are definitely better games that are P2P. This is one of the better P2P games, and most populated, on the other hand.
- I quit the game because like pretty much every single F2P game, they spend more time developing their cash shop instead of fixing bugs or making new content. This is an affliction common throughout F2P, whereas P2P survives mainly due to content.. the opposite. To me the most enjoyable point of an F2P game is just following OBT when the game is at it's earliest live stage.
- I've also worked for a few years for F2P MMORPG developers and publishers. Just an FYI. My main jobs were marketing and competitive anolysis.

Well you've sold me at least. :D Am going to give this a go tonight assuming it can play on my laptop. I need something I can play while keeping the BF company as opposed to gaming in my spare room on the gaming desktop. :)

Currently enjoying Rift. But Lord of the Rings is still the best free one. And I'll have a VIP account forever, with no pay!
FFXIV ain't free, the game itself cost like what? 30-50 bucks? Also it will not be free forever.

Less. I'll give you a hint: About 5. :P

You forget to mention that the runescape community is the toilet of online gaming. 5-10 year olds run rampant on free servers and 11-13 year olds run rampant on member worlds. You will be scammed, harrased, and begged for items at every turn, especially on the free worlds.

I played runescape from 2001-2005, back when it was decent, but these days the community really kills it. It makes the WoW community look very mature.

I also always considered the quests more of a hassel. If you don't read a guide the quests just involve going back and forth for items from your bank or you will have to go get it from who knows where.

Also most of the skills should just be renamed to "clicking skill"(fishing, mining, woodcutting, ect). But some skills are different.

if you can really get passed the really bad player base than it can be a fun game.

Hmm, the player base is interesting, I suppose it depends on what you do. The f2p player base is awful, no questions. But there are many good members playerbases for mature players, usually high-level content orientated though, with a focus on skilling.

The skills have been updated a lot over the last year, weaving them into the general gameplay rather than having them as other activities that don't impact anything, although the basic skilling mechanic is still the same.

Also, there's largely a basic item set to take with you, so long as you have that you don't have to run around getting items for quests :P. Also they give you all standard items (ropes etc.) in all the new quests.

Champions Online is the only one I can suggest since it was made F2P recently. It's a good game at its core it just hasn't caught on really imho and when it does it'll offer some great play. Only problem is the lack of group content and really you can solo your way to the highest level then create another toon if you want. The thing I will say that makes me really like the game is the superior customization system where you can pick and choose your powers.

I had left this thread because I didn't feel like answering every single person's [censored]y question about "You want a FREE MMO as good as WoW". But I was still reading through for suggestions, and I must say you seemed to be the only (or one of the only) people to even remotely hit the mark on what I wanted.

Asides from you, I took into consideration peoples GW recommendations because I did want it, and knowing I only need the trilogy and it's $30.00 will make me consider it since I want GW2 on release.

So thank you to those whom told me about the Trilogy on Steam for GW, and thank you for recommending me Pandora Saga.

@Redviv. I was debating rift. But with GW2 coming out, I can't decide :(

PS :: LOTRO, DDO are good suggestions. However DnD is only table-top for me, nothing else. And I hate the LOTR franchise oh so much.

Hmm iRO's premium server is free to play now, you just have to pay to make the account (to keep most botters out of the server). You said you already played in iRO, so if your char is still there you don't have to pay anything.

It has a cash shop though, and there are items like enriched elunium/ori that reduce the chance to break armor/weapon when upgrading, items to get exp faster, but no gears. Also if you pay like $6/month you're VIP and you get 1.5x exp, you only lose 1% exp when you die (instead of 3%), kafras are less expensive and allow to travel to more places.

I actually enjoyed playing it (like you can see from that guy on the avatar <-----), I only stopped because I get addicted and then it takes too much of my time.

Someone mentioned Silkroad Online, just want to share my experience with it (many years ago). SKO has this trade road system, whereby after a certain level, you can choose to be a trader, bodyguard or thief; trader moves the cargo from one city to another, guard protects the trade, thief steals. The system shines when someone organises a bigger party (or guild-scale) trade run/raid. On the last day of the beta I was in, there was a system-wide trade, it was insane when various guilds ambush the main group at various stages of the road.
