Suggestion for Compass

Post » Fri Sep 05, 2014 8:59 pm

First time poster, long time player, with a simple suggestion for you ( Bethesda ) that would make my day. I've been playing elder scrolls since Morrowind, and more recently fallout as well. I'm getting well over 300 hours out of each release, so thank you for that! I've purchased all DLC, less the horse armor : ) as each is well worth the price of admission. If I could make one suggestion to you that would IMMENSLEY improve my gameplay experience, it would be to give me a toggle in the options that lets me turn off the location markers on the compass. This, or similar HUD issues, seems to be a fairly common post, but I didn't see one exactly like I'm posting.

I like to moderately role play my character, no fast travel, no waiting around town for hours on end, and I really like to explore the world, but I continuously find myself staring at my compass while out in the wilds. Instead of taking in the clues you guys create to direct me to level entrances, or fun locations, I wind up chasing the next marker instead. I like to have the compass there for the cardinal directions, but looking at the markers is a habit I just can't break. Playing with the HUD tuned totally opaque isn't really an option, as you need the information the cursor is giving you, and it's a bummer to not see your health / mana bars... If I were playing on PC I'd mod them out, but I prefer to play on my console. It seems like it would be a very easy thing to include in your next masterpiece!

Either way, I'd like to thank you for your time, and the wonderful worlds you've created.

You can turn off the location markers in the compass. Enter your journal, and "uncheck" the arrows next to the active quests. Markers gone.

This won't remove cave, ruin, city, or other icons, though. Just the annoying arrows.

Thank you for the quick reply, but it's the cave, ruin, city, keep, other fun things that I should notice on my own markers that I was hoping to remove... Apologies if that wasn't clear in my original post.

No problem. Wasn't sure if you knew about turning off quest markers.

Have you tried playing a no HUD game yet?

I haven't turned my HUD on in over a year. It feels weird to have it on screen now.

I do like the feel of it with no HUD, but it gets frustrating to try and talk to a bartender, only to have them attack because your cursor just stold a loaf of bread off the shelf behind them... I have zero complaints about the vanilla game, I just wish I could tweak this one thing.

Another option is the http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/3222/? mod if you play on PC. I believe you can disable the compass as much as possible and just use the map for quest markers if you so desire.
