Suggestions for my computer upgrade

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 12:05 pm

So, Im looking forward to upgrading my graphics card in preparation for Skyrim, and ME3 and a slew of other games coming out in 2011-2013. I realize that the system requirements are not out yet and its foolish to try and prepare for something unknown, however the hype has gotten to me in such a way that I was out browsing Graphics cards today. I saw two that caught my eye, the Nvidia GTX 570 and the AMD 6950.

Here are some links if anyone wants to see them:

http://www.nvidia.com/object/product-geforce-gtx-570-us.html

http://www.amd.com/us/products/desktop/graphics/amd-radeon-hd-6000/hd-6950/Pages/amd-radeon-hd-6950-overview.aspx#1

The GTX 570 is priced at $333.99, while the AMD 6950 is $312.99

My current inclination is towards the 6950 because of the 2GB of dedicated vid memory. However I have heard, but I'm not sure, that Nvidia cards work better with Intel processors while ATI cards work better with AMD processors. I have an Intel Core 2 Quad (2.4Ghz/core).

Now, I have to specific questions:

1)Which do you think would be best fit for Skyrim runing on max?

2)I am likely to buy one of these cards later on in October-ish, will this make a difference (price-wise), do you think that there will be significant price drops by October?

Also, out of curiosity what upgrade plans are you guys planning?

P.S: For those of you who were wondering I am currently using the Nvidia 7350LE, so the upgrade is quite needed. Also I have 3GB of RAM if anyone was curious.

Go Nvidia. It has better support. You won't be needing much VRAM for Skyrim.

Absolutely the GTX 570, if you're in that range in terms of budget. I have this card and I absolutely love it. I used to be an ATI really devoted fan, but over the years nVidia always seems to raise the bar and impress me more than the Radeons have.

EDIT: www.gpureview.com is a nice site to go to if you're looking at throwing cards face to face in terms of specs.
