Suggestions for Lighting Mods

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 12:40 pm

I reinstalled Morrowind a few days ago, and after downloading mods a plenty I began a new file. However, after a while of playing I forgot that I had not installed one mod that I had previously used before, the Total Lightning Mod. So I downloaded and installed it, and one thing really struck me.

When I walked back into the Census building in Seyda Neen I realised how bad it looked with the TLM on. The atmosphere had been completely ruined from how brightly lit it was compared to how it was when I first went through the building, lit subtly by the candles. Perhaps it was because I got so used to TLM in the past that I did not notice how atmosphere ruining it could be in some buildings. However, without any sort of lighting mod, I missed the darker dungeons from my previous games, which was the thing I did love about the TLM in the past. The dungeons just feel more exciting when the corridors are darker.

Because of this, I have resolved to try a different light enhancing mod, and I'm wondering if anyone has any particular recommendations. One mod that looks somewhat promising is the Lights 300 mod and I'm wondering if anyone here has used it and could give me a better impression of whether it is good or not.

I would be grateful for any tips or advice etc.

I think the lighting settings in the morrowind.ini also make a big difference in how bright lights are. Maybe they need tweaking?

Edit: This was my 2000th post on the Morrowind Modding forum. Sweet.

Agreed. Modern monitors are siginficantly brighter than the CRTs that were common when Morrowind was released. The ini settings can make a huge difference as well as the changes made by TLM such as light radius and ambient lighting. This thread proved quite enlightening about how the light attenuation settings in the .ini file work:
http://www.yacoby.net/es/forum/9/6227011168971900.html

My Morrowind.ini has the changes in the weather section from TLM and this hand-tuned light attenuation:
[LightAttenuation]UseConstant=1ConstantValue=http://forums.bethsoft.com/index.php?/topic/1151034-suggestions-for-lighting-mods/0.25UseLinear=1LinearMethod=1LinearValue=3.0LinearRadiusMult=1.0UseQuadratic=1QuadraticMethod=2QuadraticValue=4.5QuadraticRadiusMult=1.0OutQuadInLin=0

Try those out and see what it looks like for you, it should make candle lit interiors significantly darker. My guess is that the light attenuation values really need tweaking to a particular monitor, as CRTs, TFTs and LED TFTs can all make the same scene look quite different.

Also remember with TLM that the esp that makes changes to the ambient light value should be very late in your load list, as any mod that so much as touches an interior cell will set the ambient light values back to their defaults.

These are mine, used with TLM:

Yes, I took your advice to find way of editing the lighting, and I have already tested some ini edits. Out of the ones I've tried so far, I liked the ones in this topic the most: http://www.yacoby.net/es/forum/12/6046021166065800.html

That said, I will certain take a look at your suggested levels and see what effects they have. Much appreciated.

Oh, and I forgot to mention that I'm using the patch in Morrowind Code Patch that doubles the light falloff range along with TLM and my light attenuation settings.

Oh yeah I'm also using the MCP.
