Suggestions for music for Better music system

Post » Mon Oct 25, 2010 7:01 pm

All of those songs are awesome. Any of the songs from Icewind Dale seem to fit well. This sounds like a great idea.

Are you going to be releasing a pack specifically for BSM HerGuardianAngel?

I'm not sure about releasing a pack, as I'm not sure about the copyrights to Jeremy Soule's music. But I do at least intend on creating a detailed list of which compositions go in which area along with links to each song so you can give them a listen. It's taking me a bit longer to complete it, as a couple RL issues prevent me from putting in more time than I'd like to, but I am still working on it. I'm using and messing around with http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=30200 and I'm trying to keep it sounding like Jeremy Soule as much as I can.

I just stumbled upon http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=29467 - a great pack even for someone like me who doesn't use Elsweyr Anequina (yet).
The drum driven battle tracks and some of the scary dungeon soundscapes stand out to me.

I like to encourage others to try out the medieval instrumental collection mentioned on the first post. There are two packs available (Micv1 and Micv2), either split up in the 4 directories battle, dungeon, explore and public
or combined in 2 big omod archives.

Split up:
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=22085
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=22406

2 Omods:

Last but not least I recommend a freeware program I use to normalize mp3s without recompressing them (no quality loss). With http://mp3gain.sourceforge.net/download.php you can set the average volume of all mp3s in a particular folder to an equal level. Very useful if you a have lots of mp3s from different sources - some are too loud, some too quiet.

Good point. I also have had major stuttering issues in Fallout and Oblivion when adding large amounts of music to the Music directories - I've read that stripping the ID3 tags from the MP3s helps a lot. Another free tool, http://www.mp3tag.de/en/ can handle this.

I also usually re-encode the music with any number of encoding tools (http://www.mediacoderhq.com/ is a good free one) so that all the files are the same frequency/bitrate.

I pulled this from the Fallout mod forum a while ago - I just checked it with the music in the Oblivion directory actual, they use the same bit rate and frequencies:

Game Music: 44.1 kHz, 192kbs Stereo or mono MP3 (with no tags)

Dialogue (Radio stations, radios & characters): 44.1 kHz, 236kbs (nominal and max) bitrate OGG audio

Sound effects: 32 kHz WAV mono or stereo

Whether or not this will stop stuttering for those who have that issue, I don't know - but it stopped some major stuttering problems I had in both Oblivion and Fallout 3 - although before I was using BMS.

I have been doing the same--stripping ID3 tags and re-encoding to a constant bitrate (my 'listening music' is in FLAC, but 128 mp3's are fine for Oblivion)--for some time now. I also re-encode using Frauhaufer codec, as I found that the game sometimes refused to play certain lame-encoded mp3's. Basically, I do believe that this procedure has an effect on smoothing out the game, as far as loading the music tracks goes--loading the longer tracks often did cause stutter, and the game would sometimes even give up and skip over them. But don't underestimate the value of a good defrag, either (I use Ultimate Defrag, which also allows me to place the game files and music tracks in the fastest sectors of the hard drive .. every little bit helps).

:) Nevermind, albertovizoso beat me to it. http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=30200

Edit: This pack is definitely worth downloading. Very well done.

I love this pack, just love it along with BMS. The additional music fits in so well, and jeremy soule's music is excellent.

Thanks for this!

Are there any other packs out now that add to the other sections of BMS other than the regional areas?

Yes, there is a collection called http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=27349 made by TheBlackHand that adds pieces to the Events, Factions, and Locations Folders, however much of the music is fairly recognizable, such as Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter.

I think I'll be finished with my collection by St. Patty's Day at the latest, and hopefully as soon as this upcoming Saturday. It will incorporate the best parts of Soundtrack for BMS and Regional Music of Cyrodiil, along with pieces by Jeremy Soule, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-qPH243wdHo, http://www.mikseri.net/artists/?id=48147 as well as http://www.mikseri.net/artists/?id=48148 and his other projects, and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8S6FME7tPvo&feature=PlayList&p=EC920BAE42639C7F&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=3, among several others.

So, for the last couple hours or so, I've been stuck trying to figure out what kind of music to go with in Mania... but so far no luck. :banghead: I'm thinking insane, happy, get-me-outta-here stuff will be good, but I have no idea where to look for that. Anyone have any ideas where I can find that? Or do you have a different approach to Mania music? Any help would be great.

Oh, and I was listening to some stuff made by Alacazam on youtube. I think his music is perfect for the Oblivion planes. :obliviongate:

Mania has been hard for me to get right too. So far I've used the Requiem For A Dream score which worked pretty well, and some of Bear McCreary's Battlestar soundtracks. It's hard finding stuff that is "Manic" and symphonic and fits well at the same time :P

I just finished adding every (well, almost every) song from the Lord of the Rings Complete Soundtrack into Better Music System playlists. It needs some work before I'd call it finished, but if enough people are interested I can post a list. Not going to upload because that'd probably be illegal.

Freakin' hard to organize these songs. Most of them don't really fit any one theme because they change halfway through. I sorted mostly based on the first minute or two, especially for Battle music.

Alright, so, I've progressed my list far enough along to the point where I feel like sharing it. Keep in mind, it's still incomplete, and I intend on updating it quite often throughout the week. I'd also like to hear any suggestions you may have, even critical, as long as it's informative.

Before I list, though, I'd like to thank Teron for starting this thread, and for providing an excellent starting point with all his suggestions. :foodndrink:

Links
http://www.mikseri.net/artists/?id=48147, by Matti Paalanen
http://www.mikseri.net/artists/?id=48148, by Matti Paalanen
http://www.dynamedion.de/english/downloads, by Tilman Sillescu and Pierre Langer

* = Originally suggested by Teron, thanks Teron.

Night
(This is a little more unfinished than the others)
Definitely trying to keep this more orchestral than ambient, but still very subtle, yet vast and romantic. (I'll be talking like that throughout the post, sorry if it bugs you)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gU6M5DdcfoE, by Keiko Matsui
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_K0O6mHuyg, by Jeremy Soule
Like I said, this is still a work in progress. I won't really be satisfied 'til I find at least 6 more songs to put here.

Night Public
Trying to keep these close to the sound of the daytime public pieces. They are a little less crowded, and a bit less safe and familiar.
*http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IEHC-9jtFNk, by Keiko Matsui
*Angel's Redemption, by Matti Paalanen's Celestial Aeon Project
Evening Falls, by Matti Paalanen's Celestial Aeon Project
I'd like to add at least a couple more to this list.

Riding
This is a tough one. I'm thinking a little more aggressive and exciting than the explore tracks, but that can be difficult to do, considering all the various regions. My suggestion is just turning riding off in the ini altogether. There are a couple songs, maybe, that might work.
Dire News, by Matti Paalanen's Celestial Aeon Project
Lords of the Sky, by Matti Paalanen's Celestial Aeon Project
Please let me know if you find anything better.

Underwater
I'd like to go with a more ambient, familiar sound. But until I find it...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DTRiXtP7lkA, by Keiko Matsui
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=But2AiE6ick&fmt=18, by Keiko Matsui
Again, let me know if you find anything better.

Chapels
Here's the problem with chapel music in Oblivion... most chapel songs can be much to familiar for alot of people, and some people might find it odd to use some of these songs to worship several Daedra princes. So, if you don't want to use the following songs, instead use atmosphere_09 from Oblivion's soundtrack. It fits pretty well.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C5BfirqTqm8, by Karl Jenkins (I cut it off at 4:15)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X6xhHOI9zdw, by Karl Jenkins
I'm actually pretty happy with what is already here.

Cloudruler Temple
Another Early WIP, these songs are sad, yet a little hopeful sounding, and military-ish.
*http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=raQt1t1jIMQ, this even has a download link in the info.
Hymn of the Sky, by Matti Paalanen's Celestial Aeon Project
These are, unfortunately, very short songs. Still looking for more.

Ayleid Ruins
Ambient, magical, mysterious.
*Where the Dead Lay, by Matti Paalanen's Project Divinity
*Gathering Dusk, by Matti Paalanen's Project Divinity
*Cemetery, by Matti Paalanen's Project Divinity
I'm pretty satisfied with just these three.

Oblivion Realm
I was fortunate enough to stumble across these pieces on youtube, and I really think they fit perfectly. Eerie, maddening ambience.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fW8cNHnLXeA, by Alacazam
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HEI8T0B7Oiw&feature=related, by Alacazam
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W_dtmBchdY4&feature=related, by Alacazam
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTHSKEXbQ1c&feature=related, by Alacazam
This is probably the most complete area. If Alacazam makes more, I'll add them.

Mania, Shivering Isles
I have an idea about possibly taking the vanilla Oblivion tracks and speeding them up alot, but if that doesn't work out, the best songs I've found are...
Children: Dracula, by Dynamedion
Children: Main Theme, by Dynamedion
Children: Sorcerer, by Dynamedion
Shivering Isles can be very frustrating when it comes to music, but I think these work pretty well. I'll look into Tim Burton/Danny Elfman-like pieces for Dementia.

You should also use http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=30200 and http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=29467 by Albertovizoso, as well. An alternative/addition for the Elsweyr Music is looking up Adam Hurst. He's a musical genius, and most of his songs have a gypsy/indian/middle eastern sound to them.

K, that's it for now... I'll be back on later today/tonight for more updates.

Pretty good list... but damn that Alacazam stuff is pretty heavy. Those videos are creepy, and the music together with it sets some really scary moods man. Hahaha... couldn't even watch that Witch Hunt one till the end that guy must be possessed or something that's some pretty dark and creepy stuff.

That stuff is more creepy than any movie I've ever seen, and I've seen my fair share of horror movies. I guess that would be actually make the Oblivion planes creepy however since Beth failed to do that in vanilla. Haven't listened to all of them, but I liked the ones I heard. Good stuff!

Ya, Alacazam's music is pretty creepy. Listening to his music while playing a difficult OOO/ MMM/ TIE type game, having to look over your shoulder all the time... I really think they fit really well.

Sorry I haven't updated my list in awhile, I've been a little distracted... with a new Geforce 9500 GT 1GB DDR2! :woot: Huge improvement over my previous Radeon X600. :swear: Anyway, I should add some more areas to my list tonight.

Edit: Woops, totally forgot I had to be somewhere last night. sorry about that. Good news: I'll be spending most of the day working on posting more music. Been listening to Radio Rivendell, got a couple pages more of song ideas now, as well.

another edit: you know, i'm really bad with time management, i think. i spent about 5 hours or so working on my list, yet i really haven't added anything i'm really sure about. like, i find http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L7YaWvdL3sA that i think works for fort ruins, but then i can't find anything that goes with it, so i start over again. anyway, i'm just going to stay silent for awhile til i have something i'm happy with, rather than try to force a schedule for myself. sorry about that.

Since I'm a old gamer, and started using some of your pointed musics (tnx!) here are my contribution:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LRg69vtX3FA (oblivion))

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iM58-ATpKxc (dungeons)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M5kGOiX2lIs (oblivion, dungeon)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E7wVwu4lkn0 (a classical one! maybe SI, give in the nerves)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2v8ngvpG9bs&feature=related (just a try, may work or no)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kPvbJAzJspc (too many options of this game... can't pick anything over another, but WILL take some)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=skKScoOA3YA (just wanted to put along... loved the game)

There are others that I would like to ad, but it would end as another game, not Oblivion...

Great suggestions, I'm going to add most of them to my game.

After finishing God of War III, I can say that God of War's soundtracks fit pretty well for battle themes, and some of the other themes for various areas. Really great work.

I personally also use the soundtrack to the anime fantasy series "Record of Lodoss War", I don't use the tracks with Japanese Lyrics, but there's a ton of really good fantasy atmospheric tunage for oblivion.

Can anyone give me specific download links for all of these songs? I'd love those Alcazam tracks for the Oblivion playlist, among others.

BTW, can anyone here name the songs that play on Jeremy Soule's main website? Especially the simpyl beautiful first and fifth pieces.

Thanks. :)

I"ve been looking for those as well but so far no luck. The same goes for 'Love eternia' from Jeremy Soule, it doesn't seem to be part of any album he made.

As for Oblivion Realms, you can find some free mp3's when doing a search for dark ambient music on google which fit nicely if you don't find those Alcazam files

Yay. I finally got my password back! Starting oblivion over again with mostly new music, so I thought I'd share what seems to work so far. If it's suggested in my earlier posts I'll try to skip it unless there's reason not to, so check there for more suggestions.

Dementia
I use an edited version ofhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OBduhtEVABs from the soul eater soundtrack, which slows to a stop before the battlish part of the song.
Project divinity's http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xmOP6oyLACs
And a song called nightshade overdose. Unsure where the last two songs are from, but I know they're from packs on the nexus.

Mania
Celestial Aeon Project's http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aJ3DDB4oVoY It was the only vid that had the song on youtube.
Celestial Aeon Project's http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=deIJr4YAajQ
I'm pretty sure I got them from the same pack, which I believe was http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=8033
Also using Little Goblins, from http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=20227

Heartlands
Celestial Aeon Project's Angel's Tear, which is in the previously mentioned CAP pack.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UWy4-ymJcJA From Lineage 2, and in the same pack as little goblins.
Windmills, same pack as last.
MIC-Explore 10 from http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=22085

Gold coast
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7bU3XMUQgAk From FF XIII
Celestial Aeon Project's Hope for Rebirth, which can be found http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=4191
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9FBuxs6oxZ4 from the guild wars soundtrack
MICv2-Explore 04 from the second MIC pack I believe. There should be a link there from the first one.

I'll be back soon with more, but sleep for now!

Public
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N8sXCPj9nyo&feature=related From the Pandora Hearts soundtrack, downloads for these should be in the descriptions.
Celestial Aeon Project's Crystal cavern.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DIBgRO3GXCo Erik Satie. I use this here, but you can likely put it in other places as well, such as homes.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FEEr5vpa5DU Thinking of trying this in one of the mountains instead, but it works nicely here. Pack on the nexus has it, but I'm unsure which one.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ZAkDHS_HrU Also using one, but couldn't find it on youtube.
Frozen silence lucid Dream
Frozen Silence, Past Tense. Likely all frozen silence songs are part of the same pack.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X4tsbDzv3yo&feature=fvst Erik Satie again.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s6EkDeF-1Po&feature=related
Through a Painting, off a pack from the nexus, says John Currier is the artist.

Oblivion
Time for more Pandora Hearts. Updating old song links due to downloads in these
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AHNIjPhSyUA
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVkKBLjPUPo&feature=related
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rzo7tW9qLvg&feature=related
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FeNL-IsrkZw&feature=related I can also see this one easily working for an aylied ruin, or possibly even dementia.

Arena
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-kOadnpnDu8&feature=related Updating link for ease of access.
The Castle from Adam Frechette's music pack.

Underwater
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DTRiXtP7lkA Thanks for suggesting this HerGuardianAngel.
In a Limestone Cave, From an unknown pack.

Night Public
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sT2XTJ-m_mA&feature=related Pandora Hearts again.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i8356FxUT20 Erik Satie

Again, check the earlier posts for more suggestions, this isn't my whole playlist by any means, just what I feel works so far.

Has anyone been able to at least name the songs on Jeremy Soule's main site?
