Maybe they migrated? Do SM's even breed, I have never seen a young SM? They all seem to be males as well.

For the record, Strong isn't one of the good guys. His sole motivation to be nice to you is to get the "milk of human kindness" which he believes will make Super Mutants so strong they can easily wipe out humanity. They think kindness is our superweapon. It's the only reason Strong didn't kill that other guy, and his sole reason for being grouped with you. Hell, leave him alone long enough at a settlement and you'll hear him muttering about it.
They cannot breed...yet. They are working on figuring out a way to reverse their sterilization.
I survived a close encounter with one. It ran up to me, but it didn't explode like it normally does. Instead it waited, and it let me escape. Then it ended it's life exploding on a turret outside of Diamond City. No casualties other than a pile of flesh and scrap were sustained. Now... Surviving their explosion is going to be another task...
people that want to go to heaven fall into two categories :
1) the ones that want to go but won't kill themselves to acomplish it
2) the ones that kill themselves to reach the promised land
It's been a while since I played Fallout 1, but originally, as far as I remember, Super Mutants were indeed religious fanatics, created by the religious fanatic Master for his "Unity religion".
Perhaps they are sick of living, such as their miserable life is. Time to end it.
I actually like them a lot. They're like a combo killer. Usually, I'll fire at a regular super mutant who's in front of the suicidal super mutant, that will draw the fire of the whole gang of super mutants, and then i'll wait for the suicidal super mutant to run towards his fellow mutants and shoot his mini nuke.
Now everyone's dead and I saved a bunch of ammo.
The west coast Supermutants (those from fallout 2) were actually quite civil, they lived in settlements and cities with humans and ghouls. The older Super mutants first dipped in the FEV by the master were a lot more intelligent as well (Marcus, the Lieutenant etc) its a shame Bethesda hasn't evolved their version of Super mutants into anything other than mindless killing machines.
The Supermutants also search for FEV as shown by some of their non-hostile comments. Since I doubt that Institute Supermutants know anything about FEV or even have a reason to search for it, I am pretty sure many of these Supermutants are actually Vault 87 Supermuties (who have been searching for FEV since before FO3). I would even argue that the FEV lab is too small to create such vast numbers (and they would be discarded randomly to leave no trace, so many if not most would have been killed by humans before they could find and join their kinsmen).
At worst, some of Institute Supermuties met Vault 87 ones and that made those visit the Commonwealth.
Honestly, I'm just tired of fighting Super Mutants. If they'd be confined to Strong and Trinity Tower maybe...but I'm tired of finding little strongholds of meat bags all over the Commonwealth. It'd be nice to get a new baddie to fight in addition to wildlife, Raiders, and Ferals. Getting bored with the Super Mutants.
I agree so much with this. I found them dull even when I came into franchise with FO1. They are barely above Feral Ghouls in being interesting to me.
I'd so much have preferred if some (other) Institute biological experiment plagued the Wastelands.
Feral Ghouls at least make thematic sense (and their combat/AI improvements in Fallout 4 make them credible threats). Super Mutants have seemingly gotten both stupidier and easier since I've leveled up. I distinctly remember early Super Mutant encounters being a lot more stressful - and a lot more Molotovs being thrown at me. Now it seems like all they come equipped with are Pipe Rifles and bellowing attitudes.
