Suicide illegal in Shivering Isles?

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 1:24 pm

I have always wondered why Sheogorath made it illegal to commit suicide. Could anybody give me some ideas as to why he did?

It was to drive people insane, like the guy in the quest. If a someone really wants to kill one's self but can't, it can really mess that person up.

I think it has more to with the fact that making suicide illegal can be seen as 'crazy', since you can't really legally reprimand somebody who's committed suicide (granted, with Daedric beings this would be different as they would come back eventually)...

My mind automatically goes to metaphysical motivations. Could be me overthinking though.

I don't think so. Many orthodox Christian and Muslim countries have made suicide illegal and its not really seen as crazy or unreasonable.

I see it as crazy and unreasonable, but mostly just stupid...

They don't prosecute you for trying, so isn't mostly so authorities are able to stop you?

I do to, but I just don't see that as the reason they'd put that into the game if some people don't.

Yes, which still allows it to work nicely as a way of driving depressed people insane or paranoid.

Isn't that just the most ironic thing ever, since the USA has suicide illegal.

I have no clue because, insofar as I know, there is no way to find the right answer.

After all, we are talking about daM doG. He doesn't need a logical or rational reason to make suicide illegal. :P

I could of sworn I heard somebody in the game explain why to me just the other day, but I can't remember the reason. I'll have to go back and check. Might've been some guy in the village just south of Crucible who told me.

Ah, according to the UESP a guy in Deepwallow (the village I was talking about) claims that your spirit goes there because you didn't the way Sheogorath planned. This guy might be totally insane, but it is still the only explanation I've heard in-game.

I understood it that Sheogorath wanted to create an 'incentive' for people to explore new depths of madness and not take the boring way out of his little torture-fest.

That and souls belonging to him, blah blah blah.

Maybe not by you. I think a great deal of what goes on under such systems is laughable.

plus everyones crazy and crazy people are the ones who always commit suicide. That's why he needed to keep people from killing themselves or else he has no followers.

that saying that everyone there doesn't want to be there. Which is a horrid generalization.

Its more a devisive instrument for the ponderous to wrap their brains around, biting away to find the answer, yet knowing darn well there isn't one. Foolishness. Also serves as a trivial fact for tourists to take back home with them from their stay.

No, I'm offended. This guy is making a gross generalization which could offend a lot of people, in truth.

Closed because there would be nothing left of the thread if I cleaned it up. Everybody posting in this thread already knows better than to incite real-world political and religious controversy.
