Suits of Armour

Post » Sun May 29, 2011 2:27 am

Fallout's armor system, quite frankly, svcked with having to wear a whole bodysuit and a hat, Oblivion's was all right but svcked if you wanted to be a mage (no clothes under armour or armour under robes, less pieces,) Morrowind's was the best, but too complicated having to worry about left and right gauntlets/pauldrons (boots instead of pauldrons?) But anyway, in skyrim how do you think the armor is going to work, and how do you want it to be? I'd like a combination of Morrowind and Oblivion, with apparel stacking but no left/right pieces.

I want it to be like morrowinds. I think boots, glvoes and pauldrons should come in pairs but still be seperate armor peices rather than that dumb 'full suit' idea from fallout or having tha pauldrons come with the armor

for the system and not the actual number of slots or anything like that Fallouts is undoubtedly the superior
Morrowind is kinda the crappiest becuase instead of just one object for armor there are two different ones so there was a lot of redunancy, but it did have the ability to set it as clothes or armor
Oblivion it was a step in the right direction, it combined both the armor and the biped object, but it did get rid of the option of having it as clothes or armor that you could actualy wear over
Fallout is undoubtedly the best becuase it allowed for texture packs and addons for each armor/clothes which allowed greater customization of the same type.
If the fallout system was implemented with more armor slots and the clothes option in Morrowind I would be happy
also I would really love it if bethesda allowed us to mod the number of slots

as for the actual amount I think things like boots and gloves should be in pairs, but pauldrens you have to get both

Too complicated??? RPGs are supposed to be complicated!! :P (and it really was not confusing anyways)

I'm expecting an Oblivion-style but with maybe a small sample of Morrowind-style... But I would love to see the complexity again like Morrowind.

Okay, maybe complicated isn't the right word, but I found it too much that I had to carry separate pauldrons that both weighed a ton. I still like Morrowind's system ALOT better than oblivions though.

I don't see how people get worked up about pauldrons, as if the game was more interesting when you had more puzzle pieces to scavenge for.

You have a point. And it's a good one, too.

people dont want to admit it but they want a Morrowind 2, its what started them on the series and they think it is the absolute best because of it. I know that Morrowind was a good game, but everything is best the first time.

Err, no they don't. At least, not in the confines of this poll. With the Armor systems, you might as well say people want a Daggerfall 2 then, because Daggerfall had all the Morrowind slots plus more.

In my opinion, the more opportunity for customization, the better. If people are worrying about having to track down pauldrons and guantlets in pieces, then merchants should have higher probability of carrying pairs, and the rarer stuff only found in dungeons is just something to deal with. Makes the complete set more valuable to the player.

I'd be more than happy with some cross between Morrowind and Oblivion, perhaps with capes like Battlespire if they are added. Daggerfall's vast array of equipables and system is my current favorite. I love to "play dress-up" as I like to term it.

Skyrim will be Skyrim, with a system that fits it, I bet. The others all fit themselves.

I am not saying this in the context of the pole I am saying in the context that people freak out becuase there was no pauldrens in oblivion

That still doesn't necessitate people wanting a Morrowind 2. It necessitates people wanting more customization than what was present in Oblivion's armor system. That Morrowind has customization in that regard, and that a lot of people experienced Morrowind first, is incidental. Daggerfall also had more customization. As do other games.
Noting that people want aspects or parts of things that were present in previous titles, and then morphing that into "they want [Insert-Game-Title] 2" is over-generalizing their positions. Was Oblivion a Morrowind 2 because it had birthsigns? If I wanted blocking based on player input in Skyrim, would I then want Skyrim to be Oblivion 2?

I want it to be like Morrowind's system, with 1 change. Combine left and right (for gloves/pauldrens) into 1 piece of armor.

I know that it is not true for everyone and people want the highest level of customization. But I am just saying that they want the same game again because they enjoyed it so much, anything else would be a disappointment because they were expecting the same feeling they got when they first played the game and that wont just happen.

I really loved being able to only wear armor on one arm with no chest armor and only one guantlet on the other arm. It made me feel like a gladiator or something. So if they bring back pauldrons, I hope they don't merge them into one piece.

I expect Skyrim to have a cross between Fallout and Oblivion, but I would like it to have something like Morrowind. I've got nothing against the Fallout system, but I don't think it meshes so well with the TES ways.

Well, that's sad news for all of us, whether we started with Morrowind, Oblivion, Daggerfall, or Arena, as it appears that the only people who will enjoy Skyrim to its fullest potential are those for whom it will be their 1st Elder Scrolls game.

I do appreciate what you're getting at, but I firmly believe it is very possible for Bethesda to make future titles that will make us forget about the past titles. It just has to be a balance of 1) picking through old ideas, 2) forging ahead to new ones, and 3) re-conceiving old ideas in new ways.

If anything, I would expect Oblivion's level of armor customization to be the lower-bound threshold of customization, not Fallout's. They only transferred to the 2-slot armor because that's how the Fallout series has worked since its conception. And I think Pete's on record somewhere saying the FO system is just not up to the TES standard.

Morrowind's boots weren't seperate pieces, though, they came in pairs that could not be seperated, other than that, though, Morrowind's gloves and gauntlets and pauldrons were all seperate items and came in left and right. And I hope to see this again in Skyrim. Not because Morrowind did it, but because it means more customization, and I'm not saying Bethesda has to do what Morrowind did, if Skyrim can have even more customization in armor and clothing, I won't complain, so long as it doesn't turn into a horribly balanced mess, and while Morrowind's apparel customization had some balance issues, I think those can be fixed without removing options for the player. At least in the case of gloves and pauldrons, there's no way Bethesda could balance wearing pants and shirts under armor without screwing over unarmored players, I think, but wearing robes over armor could be alright as long as you can do it with shirts and pants. I could live with Oblivion's level of customization, though I'd rather have my left and right pauldrons and gauntlets back, but I'd be VERY unhappy if we got Fallout 3's system. For Fallout, it could be justified by the fact that past games in the series also had one piece suits, but the Elder Scrolls has no such excuses.

people dont want to admit it but they want a Morrowind 2, its what started them on the series and they think it is the absolute best because of it. I know that Morrowind was a good game, but everything is best the first time.

I may not speak for everyone here, but that's not what I want at all, I don't want Skyrim to be Morrowind 2, I just want it to be the best game it can possibly be. There are some things that Morrowind did well which I think could benefit Skyrim as well, but there are also aspects of Morrowind which I would NOT want to see in Skyrim, whether because I feel Skyrim could do them better, or because they worked well for Morrowind, but wouldn't be appropriate for Skyrim.

Indeed, just because we say "They should do what [Insert past game title here] did doesn't mean we want Skyrim to be exactly like that game, it may just be that we happen to think that game did something pretty well, so we use it as an example of what we want to see in Skyrim.

Well, that's sad news for all of us, whether we started with Morrowind, Oblivion, Daggerfall, or Arena, as it appears that the only people who will enjoy Skyrim to its fullest potential are those for whom it will be their 1st Elder Scrolls game.

I can't agree there. I've played Daggerfall, Morrowind and Oblivion, and started with Morrowind, but I still fully expect to enjoy Skyrim, as I did with Oblivion and Daggerfall, despite having started with Morrowind, it will be a different experience, certainly, but I don't see that as a bad thing, if I want to play Morrowind, I'll play Morrowind, the reason I am looking forward to Skyrim is because I WANT a different experience. If anything, the fact that Bethesda delivers a different experience with each Elder Scrolls game helps to ensure that no matter how many I play, I can srill enjoy them where I might eventually get bored with aq series if each new sequel was basically the same thing.

by Morrowind 2 I dont mean the exact same game I mean the exact same experience, yeh there is some stuff that needs to come and go, but when you play an awesome game you want the same experience

More like Morrowind's system. Actually, how about like in Dragon Age: Origins except with pauldrons? They had separate gloves, boots, greaves, and chest pieces (but the pauldrons were part of the chest plate). Maybe even separate vambraces would be good. You guys think 6 slots is too much?

As far as the armor system goes, I dont know what will actually be put into the game. My best guess would be something like the armor system from Oblivion. Although that system wasnt terrible, it could have done better. Which is also my opinion on FO3 and New Vegas. Not gawd awful, but not perfect. I would like to see a mix between Morrowind and Oblivion. I am biased towards MW, but keeping some of the ideas from Oblivion would not be a bad idea considering how many people enjoyed that game

From an artist/programmer point of view, the MW approach puts too many restrictions on how you can express yourself when creating it. Many of the FONV armors wouldn't be possible if done in this fashion - how do you make a rubber tire "pauldron" that fits nicely to you body also suit a power armor without ending up in clipping hell? How do you mount a power armor pauldron to a fur curiass? MW worked because it didn't look all that great and unique, which is something I want in Skyrim. With that in mind, what I'm suggesting is a mix; some armor styles mix well, while others *require* parts that suits only that style.

From a gamers point of view, yes of course I want more slots. But I prefer a character sheet slot system over any form of list(OB)/matrix(MW). Click a slot and select from list of items appropriate to that slot, with a notice of anything causing incompatibilities with other items (see above; selecting a power armor pauldron would remove your armor that was not based on power armor). If it's list based and we again gets endless lists of items, I think I'd actually prefer FONV style suits. If many many slots, then restrict enchanting and rather make the slots appealing to use for other reasons.

Something else: daggerfall in terms of customisation (with hood, cloak over the shoulder or not), and Fallout 3 and NV vegas damage calculation system.
