Summing up FO3..

Post » Sun Sep 05, 2010 3:50 am

My wife, not a gamer at all, was watching me lock pick a first aid kit. I explained the point of it and went to an ammo box. It was not locked. She said "So Fallout is a game where the first aid kits are locked and the ammo boxes are not." I said well,... yeah...
Summed it up nicely I thought.

The game world was built without any logic in mind.

Ya, except that not every first aid kit is locked and not every ammo crate is unlocked.

So, no, I don't really understand what you are trying to say.

Hmm. Sorry to say it, but from a european point of view this is quite logical given the general attitude to drugs/medics and weapons in the US.
Not teasing... just saying...

This.

I don't recall any first aid kits that I had to unlock. Would be a bad thing to have them locked. A room full of medical drugs I can see being locked. A box full of emergency supplies "First Aid" being locked is stupid. If I cut myself, the last think I'd want to do is go find a key to a box to get a band aid.

There are locked boxes in the game.

@ Master Cat - that was a greatly ill-informed remark, especially since in the game first aid boxes are found both locked and unlocked and ammo crates are found both locked and unlocked. There is no pattern.

I am sure there are but I am wracking my brain trying to think of at least one that I had to unlock. If they are as many locked ones as locked ammo boxes I would not be having such a hard time trying to remember even one locked one.

edit: maybe ones that are in Doctors Offices with people around like in Underworlds Lab or Megatons doctors room but the ones in the wasteland I can't think of any that are locked.

There is at least one at the Talon Camp by the Arlington Library. And yes, the doctors have locked ones. Usually the locked ones have more stimpaks in them than the unlocked ones. I can't really remember where they are throughout the Wasteland either because I don't usually bother to unlock them. I only remember about the Talon Camp because there are unlocked ones there as well and it always makes me laugh that they are mixed together.

@ Master Cat - Oh, no worries. I understand about 5am and everything.

But indeed, it's rather odd that only a number of ammo boxes are locked, and even more oddly they rarely contain more than a few rounds.

Clearly, if i was unlocking a first aid kit, there are kits that need to be unlocked. As I said, my wife is not a gamer, this was a stand alone event for her and her statement struck me as funny. I was trying to share, to each there own.

I also thought it was pretty funny that some first aid kits would be locked. Like putting a lock on a defibrillator case in a building. :P

I got it mate. I liked it, I thought it was a good example.

I think where people are falling short of grasping the context of what you meant is that they aren't seeing it through your wife's eyes and how she may of interpreted the events. Nor are they responding really to the 'real world' aspects in your depiction of the events, just the specifics of the game.

As within the specifics of your wife's experience of Fallout - it is a game that locks First Aid Boxes and not ammunition boxes. While not being literally accurate, somehow the sentiment is completely precise with the general milieu and ethos of the game world it exists within. :tops: Sounds to me like shes ready to start gaming! :gun:

I've wondered myself why they would lock first aid kits.Maybe it's the fact that supplies of any kind are in short supply but that wouldn't explain why some are open.I can just see the developers giggling to themselves.

I believe I came across a few in Paradise Falls. I also got the red marker saying it was stealing to take anything. Even though I killed everyone first (except the slaves).

Thank you Milady, it's good to know.

My first post was lame, I admit. It could be seen as US-bashing, which it was not. The idea was that in US the policy towards drugs are restricted, while the weaponpolicy is rather liberal compared to EU-standards. Over here both containers would have been locked  .

It's also a game where beings who are healed by radiation sometimes carry RadAway.

guys, your not thinking that its been 200 years and alot of things have been there other than before the war. the best explanation would be that a raider put a lock on the thing so his buddies wouldnt steal it.

ammo boxes, stimpacks are rare but you cant go five feet without tripping over a 10mm round... or getting shot by one, thats why they will lock a first aid kit other than a ammo box.

you guys realise that super duper mart didnt sell grenades, right? those are the raiders grenades, they put it in there when they took the place over.

Spoiler
heres an example. theres a grocery store, theres cleaning boxes and cereal there, its there cause whoever was there last liked traps, those boxes are used for dominos to trigger a grenade bouquet.

I got it, my friend. XD I think it is a pretty observant remark from a non gamer, I do think it sums it up.

GAIS. I think what he means is 'This is a game where weaponry is more freely available, and more widely used, than medical supplies.'
^^ that's the anti lulz version of it anyway.
