Summon a Dragon

Post » Sat Jan 22, 2011 11:12 pm

So usually in a TES game the greatest thing a conjurer can call forth is a Golden Saint...

In Skyrim, Conjurer's should be able to summon a dragon... and sick it on the village or army you don't like.

Yea thats going to be interesting, how good the dragon will be that you can shout up for your self is what I am curious about for sure. It is confirmed that dragons are the most powerful things in the game (was obvious) and I am really excited but also really wondering how the whole having your own dragon to fight for you is going to work. I mean I just don't see you in a town shouting up a huge dragon to carpet bomb a town with fire and massacring everyone in it, as the dragon we saw in the gameplay trailers physics & combat was ridiculously badazz.

Seems like a bit much though doesn't it? I mean I'd have to be having real trouble with a gang of like 20 bandits before I would need to call a frickin dragon!

I mean we aren't talking about shouting up a small purple dragon named Spyro, we saw a beast of a dragon in that gameplay trailer and if we can summon that by all means gawd I hope so but its almost too good to be true. I mean that was a fully realized, flying, big fire breathing dragon. Did I mention carpet bombing? I mean com on if we can summon that lets just go ahead & rate the game a 10 out of 10 right now.

What if it was a dragon riding bandit dragon that shot dragons out of its mouth?

There's probably more to it. I'd be surprised if it behaved like a normal summon. Perhaps there's a chance of it failing, like if a dragon isn't nearby it won't work. Also we don't know if it's going to be a dragon doing a fly by and laying down a few fireballs or if it'll land and bite and tear enemies. Also it's likely they'll only stick around for like 10 seconds.

My guess would be that we would summon our dragon to help us fight another dragon. Outside of that, yeah, seems like overkill. Also, I'm assuming this "summon" will only work outside? I can't see it happening inside of a cave, or a house for that matter. Dragon might come in handy for giants too..

Yea there is just too many possibilities of what it means to summon your own dragon with the shout. Having the dragon we saw in the gameplay trailer with full AI (flying up in the air, melee attacks, fire balls, aerial based fire attacks) at your side for x amount of time to fight for you is pretty cool but there will for sure be restrictions if that's the case I have no dout. So yea realistically we will probably get some sort of dubbed down dragon with its full combat AI & abilities or just a simple aerial fly over attack.

But as johner210 said, a dragon coming to you only if there is one nearby would be VERY AWESOME I think and the amount of time you are in control of the dragon could vary as well. That would balance out a lot of things like attacking & devastating towns, summoning them into caves and inclosed area's etc.

What if the shout simply summons the dragon, but doesn't necessarily mean it's friendly... in that case you would need a high level of conjuration to make it your friend, otherwise you may be it's target as well.

Yeah this feature does concern me, it seems too OTT. I had thought though that maybe the dragon could be linked to the Grey Beards, say it chills out near their crib and is their best kept secret or something. That way when you need help, you actually call a real dragon, as apposed to a conjuration like summoning. I would prefer this as it seems more plausible (and no flames please, I know we are talking about a fantasy world full of talking mud crabs and other things that wouldn't normally be considered "real")

Hm, a lot of stuff in the later TES game is overpowered... that's just the nature of the game. I think when you get to high levels you should be god-like. In Gothic III, high level wizards could call down giant meteor storms and wipe out entire armies.

I agree that summoning the dragon would be coolest if it just flew out of the clouds (rather than coming out of a portal or something).

Summoning a dragon would be cool, but it couldn't fall under traditional conjuration. Conjuration calls things out of Oblivion, so you can summon Daedra and Daedric armor. Dragons, however, are either natural residents of Tamriel or they came from Aetherius, which is where the (Aedric) gods live, like Alduin. Considering Alduin isn't a Daedric lord, his servants couldn't be Daedric, which means they can't be summoned out of Oblivion.

I can and do agree with what your saying about overpowerement being common place in TES games, and appropriately so. I also think that at higher levels you sould excert God like abilities on lesser mortals, be it for their good or your whimsical desires. What I was trying to get at I think was the change that "oh crap I need help.... cue dragon shout.... pooof! fire breathing dragon to save my skin" has on the feel of TES gameplay. I've always thought that it's me that has the ability and I can save the day, and I'm not all that keen on changing that. However, in writing this, I realise that I havn't really used conjuration much in my play throughs, and summoning a dragon is not that far removed from summon other beings to assist you. So in short, after a long intro, yes to summoning a dragon!

That's a good point, perhaps conjuration in Skyrim will draw on Aetherius rather than Oblivion.
