Summoners forced to play on adept difficulty, literally.

Post » Tue Dec 13, 2011 3:03 am

Any build that relies on summons to tank and do damage can't play the game on any difficulty higher than adept, and here's why ...

First, summons and companions get the same HP buff that every other NPC gets on master.

Second, all NPC damage modifiers based on difficulty only apply to you, so your summons are only taking "adept difficulty" damage the whole time.

So, playing on master with summons/companions tanking for you is NO DIFFERENT than playing on adept while summons/companions tank for you. Honestly, kinda lame.

Rational gamer: you are right, thats quite an oversight...
Devil's advocate: You still need to deal more damage to mobs, and still get shot by archers!

I'm not following your logic at all. First, how does this force you to play on adept, and second, why does it even matter what difficulty you play on?

I haven't had any problems, did you get the right conjuration perks? With double reanimate health and stronger atronotiches plus twin souls summoning 2 at once, they seem to be able to kill anything even on master, in fact I found myself not using twin souls anymore cause it felt too op, I never had a chance to cause my own damage from destruction.

What he's saying is that on Master difficulty your summons are also beefier, thus nullifying the switch to Master difficulty for a summoner.

That being said though, as others have pointed out, you the caster can still get one shot so it's not really the same as playing on Adept. Just when you're playing petwars.

Yeah -- the Dremora Lords are specially OP.

Anyone that finds the game a little too easy even on Master should try adding this mod on top of it, especially if you're a Sneaker -- http://skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=1269

If i'm getting this, and it's not easy at the moment, he's saying all summons/npcs get a HP buff, but the npc's don't get the damage buff. So your summons are likely to survive longer when playing on a harder difficulty, but you yourself are not.

Heh, my talk about being 'forced to play on adept' is more of a dramatization than a talking point.

Still, this is one of the main reasons summons are considered so overpowered and why they do seriously trivialize the higher difficulty levels.

I play a mage who relies on summoning, because obviously we do get 1-shot by pretty much everything, but using summons takes things too far in the other direction.

On master all NPC's get a HP buff and a damage buff when attacking you and only you. The NPC damage buff doesn't apply when NPC's attack your summons and companions, though, so they become pretty overpowered tanks compared to what they should be on master.

I have to play on Master or there's no challenge at all, I've found. The game is still fun though. My Conjuration isn't maxed but I'm guessing if I have two atronach's out it may make the game way too trivial then.

Your not forced to do anything.

You're being incredibly pedantic.

Just play the damn game.

My response: I will prove this wrong! Why? It's [censored] cold outside this weekend.

Have at you!

Never said I was forced to be a summoner; I want to be one. Are you saying I shouldn't point out a difficulty scaling oversight that effects the class I want to play as in a way that makes the game less fun?

I understand where you are coming from. I guess some kind of self restraint is needed (such as ignoring certain perks). You should'nt have too I know, but maybe its something that will be addressed when balancing mods and patches come out.
