Super Mutants and the FEV

Post » Thu Dec 15, 2011 7:17 pm

So after playing Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas, plus all the associated DLC over the past 18 months, only now discovered how the Super Mutants came to be.

Never knew the whole backstory behind them.

My own in-game knowledge was that they were some freak show created by experimenting with the Forced Evolutionary Virus.

What I didn't know was the origins of FEV, which was the Pan-Immunity Virion Project (PVP) as developed by US defence contractor, West Tek.Apparently it was created in order to deal with the possible threat of biological warfare from the Chinese. The US Army later stepped in and created the FEV, with disastrous consequences.

Fantatstic read on the subject here, if like myself, you were unaware of the backstory. http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Forced_Evolutionary_Virus

Just another example of the incredible lore of the Fallout universe.

The United States Army did not create all the super mutants we see in Fallout, Fallout 2, Fallout Tactics and Fallout New Vegas. Richard Moreau aka Richard Grey aka The Master created all of them at the Mariposa Military Base. This is where all the work on the FEV project was moved once the military took interest in the PVP.

It also might interest you to know that this is where the Brotherhood of Steel was also formed. Roger Maxson and his men took control of Mariposa and killed the scientists once they found out what they were doing to people. They tried to turn themselves in but got no responce from their HQ. The Great War happened. Once radiation levels were safe Roger had his men and their families move to a government bunker called lost hills.

The Super Mutants in Fallout 3 are a different type of super mutant and lore wise their existence doesn't make sense, but lets not get into that.

I agree with you Fallout has some awesome lore :D

Thanks for the reply Styles. Very interesting.

The whole thing is just fascinating.

I've been gaming for a loooooong time and I can't think of a game that has completely svcked me into its fictional universe as much as Fallout.

Wish there was a Fallout 4 coming out soon as I've played all the Vegas and Fallout 3 DLCs.

officially addicted...lol

So why not play Fallout, Fallout 2 and Fallout Tactics? You can buy them really cheap and in a pack. Pretty much any computer made in the last 12 years will play them. You will have to get patchs for Windows 7 to play them.

After all if you are addicted with Fallout, you should play the originals, including Tactics. Stay away from "The Burned Game."

Three more Fallout games, full of lore/canon :D

Not all of them. The first gens like Marcus and all nightkin were created by the Master, but the second generation super mutants were created accidentally by the Enclave when they excavated Mariposa during FO2. Apparently the Chosen One didn't kill them all on his way to loot that power armor and gauss pistol. :P

This is explained in the NV loading tips as well as by Tabitha.

The Super Mutants in Fallout and Fallout Tactics were all created by The Master. The Super Mutants in Mariposa were created by mistake by the Encalve, so you are right. Still most all of them besides those were created by The Master. So I should have said most of the Super Mutants we see other then the ones in Fallout 3 were created by The Master.

Cheers Styles.

Good to see so many knowledgable, friendly members on this forum.

I have a Mac and an Xbox 360 (no PC) so I'm thinking my chances of playing the previous incarnations are on a par with surviving a Deathclaw ambush with bare fists. :hehe:

I played all the Fallouts using PC. I am not sure about Mac, I am sure there is something out there that will let you play them with it.

FEV was also used by the Enclave to develop the "Project" also known as the FEV Curling 13 virus, which was to be distributed world-wide via atmposhperic currents.

Later, President Eden and east coast Enclave scientists would take this virus and modify it so that it would target individuals and creatures based on the level of mutation in their genes. The Modified FEV virus was specically tailored to be used in tandem with Project Purity.

Back when I first played Fallout 1 I used to read through all the holodisks at West Tek, it was really fascinating all those numbers and percentages. Later on however when I started studying more on viruses I noticed how well made hogwash the FEV was and lost interest. I'm more interested in the Enclave's FEV modifications, as they actually work like viruses do (you know, a virus is not a chemical, it's a more or less living creature just like anything else)

Hey guys, do not take this stuff too seriously. It was not created as some concept from the beginning, rather it was added semirandomly one on top of another as Fallout games were made. Nobody was probably thinking about Fallout 2 when working on Fallout. They made sequel as a consequence of first game been successful. So this whole "Fallout universe" is in many ways forcing things together which does not always fit well. Sort of spaghetti universe.

So enjoy these games individually for what they are without meditating too much over details. Like how is it possible that mutants still roam desert after most of them and their master who created them was destroyed 4 generations ago.

Bye the way, Fallout and Fallout 2 are naturally more consistent with each other than rest because they were done by same team of people in the same company.

Sort of spaghetti universe.

Sounds delicious.

Also, it's videogame lore, you create it as you go along. That's what makes future releases so amazing. There's not set path that they have in the future. They don't have to figure out exactly what happened in each game until they're working on the next one.

And psh, you act like everything in our world is so boring and logical and easily explained.

Does Interplay's version of fallout ship with the DOS executable? (The original Fallout disks did; The GOG version does not :(); If so, one could try to run it with Dosbox for MacOSX.
