Superbowl Trailer?

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 4:14 am

I'm just thinking out loud here... They said we would be having more info... and the best way to announce that the game is coming out to the whole population would be at a national event, be it E3 or the superbowl ( closest choice ). a lot of TES fans may have other issues that need attention, or they could have forgotten about gaming ( some grow up ) and when they are watching the superbowl they'll be like holy sausages I forgot about that game!

Well anyways I just think it'll be a good idea, Halo 3 went that way and the whole of the US at least got to see the teaser...

Will they do it? SHOULD they do it?

I don't know if they would, it's not the most mainstream game, and air time for the super bowl is suuuuuper expensive.

I'm not sure a hole lot of TES fans will be watching the superbowl...no offence to anyone that does, more power to you. I don't see it happening.

You're telling me that Halo 3 had Microsoft's cash at it's disposal and used it to advertise to its target audience?

if Bethesda spent that much money to air during the super bowl they'd only be able to have 1 voice actor for the whole game

just checked, costs 2.6 million dollars for 30 seconds of air time
yay money...

Correct me if im wrong here but if i remember correctly, its around 1 mil + for a 30 second commercial during the super bowl. and beth. is still a growing company, nor are they the most "mainstream" game as Diebold mentioned. i say probably not.

I'm pretty sure paying a few million dollars to show a 30 second commercial on the Super Bowl isn't the best use of a small companies money. It isn't really the best rep out there for this kind of game either. Sure plenty of Elder Scrolls fans probably watch football, but many people don't watch it. You may think it would target those that do, but those that do probably already know of its existence and those that don't won't warrant enough sales to recover the multi-million dollar loss.

I never new Bethesda counted as a small company, but sure I can see that it is a big risk that may not pay off. I was just thinking what could be a possibility for added sales. But I didn't think that Bethesda paid for advertising costs... doesn't that fall to the distributor? ( this is just ignorance on my part )

Cost aside, I don't even see that as valuable towards Skyrim's market base. The reason Halo 3 was on the Super Bowl is because of its wide audience - particularly composed of several individuals that watch and play sports. But Skyrim has nothing to do with that audience, so it'd make no sense, even with Oblivion's popularity.

I feel like Beth would give us a heads up if there was going to be an ad. I am pretty sure that Bungie did oh so many years ago.

I doubt Bethesda has the budget apportioned to throw a Superbowl trailer, or maybe it isn't part of it's marketing and embargo line.

They'd catch a wide audience and I'd say enough TES fans watching.

It'd be dismissed by the majority of viewers though unless they threw in, "From the makers of Oblivion and Fallout 3."

Even some Oblivion players don't recall the TES name. Bethesda is most associable with FO3 though.

And plenty think New Vegas is fully BGS's game rather than Obsidian's.

Anyways yeah, it'll reach a large audience and there's most likely plenty of football loving TES fans.

But the costs outweigh the market reach. Plus people will probably boo some weird fantasy game add in the middle of everything else.

Personally I'm one of those non-Elder Scrolls fans. Some of my friends are.

I'm just a Black Isle and fan of the original Fallout and Wasteland.

Edit: And yes all things said Bethesda is a pretty small company. Those millions of dollars need to be spent wisely on game development in the first place.

Thinking that even Rockstar has issues at times with money without leaving Take Two vulnerable it's no surprise.

These aren't EA or Activision sized remember.

"Indie" maybe not. But pretty close to it. And Bethesda still has very surprisingly small teams as much as we'd think heavy hitters like Oblibion and Fallout 3 might of made them unbelievably filthy rich.

If the game was 2-3 months away, then yeah maybe.

However, the game is 9-10 months away, so I don't see the point considering the cost. People forget quickly these days.

This would be a poor decision.
I would expect NFL game to be played but Skyrim during the superbowl would just be silly and a waste of advertisment funding.
Right now I suspect gaming sites and mags ASKing Bethesda to do interveiws and such where as smaller less noticeable games tend to pay for it.

That's right... Bethesda = Boardwalk

While super bowl audiences will contain a large portion of the target market for skyrim, it wouldn't be cost effective IMO because Skyrim isn't enough of a crowd-pleasing game that would make uber-expensive superbowl advertisments worth it.

Halo on the other hand is very crowd pleasing.

I don't think it is. Somewhere I saw the list of slated ads for the SB, and nothing about vidya games was there.

It would easily be by far the best superbowl comercial they would have, hands down. However, I just don't see it happening.

The money should be spent on the game, not a 15 sec advert to blow $10 million. Besides, are the beer-belly sports jock-heads really the same audience that plays TES?

My theory about the announcement date was Jan. 1 with a Superbowl commercial....alas, I was wrong on the first, probably wrong on the second. My superbowl thing was in half-jest. I can't remember when I saw the FO commercial on TV, if it was a major program or not.
