Supposedly New Concepts

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 4:33 am

So I was cruising around deviantart.com when I came across a guy claiming he'd done commissions for Bethesda on Skyrim. Whether they are actually using them or not is a different story, but there are some pretty interesting ones.

Thoughts?

EDIT: It's now clear that these are, as I thought, NOT official concepts. The artist claimed them as commissions but either doesn't know what the word means or lied and tried to backtrack. Either way, pretty cool.

If I could edit the title I would. Hehe.

Highly skeptical of this. The art direction/graphical styel appears to be different.

I agree, but they could have had the NDA lifted if they weren't going to be used. He says they're commissions, so just how much direction he had from the core team is questionable, or if they were just like: "Here's $$$, do something cool."

+1

It also seems that the landscape is too, erm, "open"
My guess is that some talented concept artists used SKYRIM so more people would view them.

It's just personal concepts right? I mean they don't look much like the art work that was on the Bethesda walls in the GameInformer interviews. I couldn't see any claims to being a Bethesda employee - no matter still fun to look at it

He says they're commissions, which would mean official, but either he didn't read his NDA properly, Bethesda said "No thanks, go ahead and use them in your portfolio," or he's straight up lying.

Why would Bethesda release concept art on deviant art...and not their own site..

Think for a moment, Bethesda didn't release these, an artist did.

I wonder if we can get official word on it? Not gonna hold my breath, but, would be nice.

Can't argue with this logic. ^

It says Bethesda copyright, and so it is owned by Bethesda, yeah?

What, so they have a magical lock on digital image files? Copyright does not imply they have some direct control over the content, only legal control.

The artist creates a digital image as part of a commission after signing an NDA, Bethesda pays the artist. This image is a file on a computer, which is then sent to Bethesda for notes/approval. Even if it's stipulated in the NDA that he has to delete it from his personal records once submitted, it is still up to the artist to delete the original files.

If I'm understanding your hilariously terrible grammar...

It's a thin argument to say just because he's not in Richmond he can't have done commissioned art for them. This kind of thing happens all the time, remote commissions.

However, I am willing to bet these are not real or at least they weren't approved as fitting with the Skyrim style.

I'm not really digging them myself. Too cartoony and totally out of place for a Tes game

Some of those, like the 2nd one there remind me of Morrowind. Looks nice.

Why would Bethesda get some outsourced concept art when they have plenty of in-house talent.

*RealNoir13 Mar 7, 2011
Oh my, do you work in Bethesda Softworks???
GOSH you are lucky indeed!!

Awesome piece by the way!!
I'm a huge fan of The Elder Scrolls series since when I played Daggerfall when I was a kid, so I'm gonna get this next installment for sure!

~CohenR Mar 8, 2011
i wish i were -___- but no, just an artist ))
my first TES is Morrowind, and that was damn awesome game.
So huge and complicated, that even thinking about it now make me shiver

*RealNoir13 Mar 26, 2011
Then why are you saying that the copyright of this artworks belongs to Bethesda Softworks if you are not working with them

~CohenR Mar 27, 2011
Coz Skyrim, The Elder Scrolls and other signs are belongs to them, thay are official owner, and if i try to get money from any art, they might sue me for violation of rights -___-

~CrayolaColours Mar 6, 2011
This is amazing. I do worry though, are you allowed to sell prints of fan art? Couldn't you get in trouble?

~CohenR Mar 6, 2011
in fact, i'm not selling it
if someone wanted version for print, i'll be glad to send hi-rez image for free

now end this thread please

Some good art but you can see why they didn't keep the images. It's not exactly fitting with the direction they have gone for with their concept art.

The thread should stay, it's a fan of the game spending his time creating some nice art work. What's the problem with that?

It all looks very good, but I don't believe for a minute that those are actual Skyrim concept art pieces.
