Does the silencer/suppressor(what's its name?) reduce the damage of weapons?

Sorry for my English XD.

According to the Crysis 2 guide book I bought to try and help me through this game ( I can't play worth a hoot ), it gives a detailed breakdown on all weapons, suit functions, etc along with play by play for each level and it did say that the suppressor will reduce both power and range to some degree. It gave the example that in some cases, the sniper rifle would require 2 shots to the head at long range but only one without. Same for shotgun. When I played the game, I found it to be true more or less, did not seem to make much difference until I stretched the range, although I did notice that the shotgun does seem to have a bit less power at all ranges with it on. But that is just what this big book claims and what I seem to be able to confirm, on the other hand, I STINK and play so terribly I have to stick to single player for fear of getting embarrassed and causing so much trouble for others on line..........

I think it reduces the speed of the bullet at least. I notice I have to lead a lot more with a suppressed sniper rifle than a unsuppressed sniper rifle

the silencer doesn't reduce the base damage of a weapon but it does increase the damage falloff over distance.

Ehm i don't understand even if i use a dictionary, can you tell me this part using simple words?

Most guns in games have a 'damage dropoff', which is the distance at which the gun will do a preset lesser amount of damage.

With the silencer, either the dropoff damage is lower or the distance at which the dropoff occurs is shorter; from what was said I am not sure.
