Survival mode character builds?

Post » Mon Mar 07, 2016 7:29 am

Just wondering if anyone is planning how to shape their character for a first go at Survival mode?

I'm seriously considering a full Strength/Endurance build, with 4 Charm for Lone Wanderer and Attack Dog, and 2 Intelligence for Medic. Melee weapons only, no VATS, constantly drunk or tanked up on Chems, no companions (except Dogmeat), completely ignoring things like lock picking and hacking. I think it might be a fun build.

Anyone got any similar plans brewing?

P.S. Please don't bring up sleep saving and all that.

I'd work on charisma later. I'd want max Endurence and strength like you, but put more into agility, perception, and luck. Fatigue is now a thing so having good AP is a must.

Yeah good AP is a must if you're using VATS. Real time melee attacks don't use VATS though (unless I'm mistaken?), so I'd only be using AP to run away when things get too hot.

Are power attacks not a thing?

Doesn't really matter if you're always hopped up on jet fuel.

I like your idea about no lock picking or hacking.

For me, will probably join the faction that shan't be mentioned (again) for the ability that shan't be described. If they fix cryolator, not sure I can resist lock picking.

Will probably grab strong back early

I'm not actually sure how melee works in this game, I've never used it. Should probably check these things out beforehand.

My thinking is to try and make a build that's quite quickly brilliant at a few things and just ignores everything else. Survival mode is going to be hard, so I don't think I want to be spreading perks out all over the place, waiting ages to see the real benefits from their higher tiers.

I'm going unarmed/nvde sneaky cannibal junkie. AP is a must always, power attacks out of vats in 3rd person is the best way to fight. That and you never want to be stuck walking towards a shooter.

Strength and Endurance a 9, high luck, everything else average or low. He's going yo be a big gun and melee weapon user which I think will help a lot.

Interesting SPECIAL points allocation. 2 Endurance is brave. Braver than I'd attempt.

And I'm liking these almost evil ways people are thinking of using the Settlement features. Sweat shops and drug factories! Someone in another thread was talking about wiping out their settlers periodically to build up Adrenaline. ??

I was planning on just using my current character if I go into it (for reasons that shan't be spoken) not really sure I want to make a new character in 4.

It's a very "grindy" approach, I probably wont really go beyond the first 2 settlements for the first 10 levels so I'll have 9 stat points to spend before I go out and really start to get into it. My hope is idiot savant will proc enough time with my buldings the first 5 levels will soar past and the rest will come from a few quests

I have a name you know!

Admit it, although morally wrong it is a viable tactic to get high adrenaline.

I am probably going to avoid my chem build. Just to avoid getting sick.

Messing around with a hardcoe test character. My idea is a long range gunner with some kind of melee as back up when groups gain to much ground on me. I'll post my specific build once i create the person though. currently thinking about putting more points in endurance and perception considering the limited hud elements that will be avail. I'm really trying to cut down on the amount of accidents i'll be having considering the limited saves we'll be having. Like this one I ran into the other day wandering around

I tried something different this time , I've recently switched platforms from PS4 to PC ( no offense to ps4 ,I've spent many, many hours on mine but work away from home a lot and have left it to the kids)

I'm level 68 on a single character with PS4 but decided to go old school and pull out the D&D dice and roll a new one for the new survival mode on the PC.

Strength 5 Perception 3 Endurance 5 Charisma 1 Intelligence 5 Agility 4(+1 special) Luck 5 and six female.

I lucked out on charisma but it shouldn't be too bad through the early levels.

Not sure of a build yet , no intention of re-rolling but will work it out as I go along all the way to the non existent end.

I always make universal builds with all specials between 3 and 4 and a bit higher perception, intelligence and agility. Later I improve all skills to 7-9. So I`m always free to change my playing style any moment I want to.

The toughest part is the beginning. You need to have at least 3-4 endurance to barely survive, but the more endurance you have, the easier it will be. Sneak and all those other perks are useless at the beginning because they need to be leveled a couple of times to get OP. Rifleman is useless too because you don't start finding rifles until level 14+ or so. You can get .38 pipe rifles, but they svck. VATS svcks too because you can't hit anything thanks to your crappy guns. See my point? I've had to run away from a fight twice and go back to finish the area. I also ran out of ammo, completely, and had to leave. The guns are so inaccurate and enemies have so much HP that I have to save up ammo. That's what makes it hard.

Things like this is what really svcks about F4...

There really isn't a reason to plan out a set build since the only limitation is time now. Before, planning out your stats at the start of the game for perks that come way later was what made it fun. Ya know, like: "I need to have a Per. & Agi. of 8 so I can take the Sniper perk" or whatever, but now it just seems pointless since no matter how you start your character you can bump other stats to get any perk you want, only latter rather than sooner...

So the two options are:

Start off weak then end strong.

Start off strong then end strong(er).

I really hope the new Survival will make this better.

Personally I would never have thought up such a tactic, since I always make "good guy" characters...for the first play through...

That's partly why I've been thinking about a pre-planned build. I think with all the added complications of Survival mode, do I really want to be "playing the long game", spreading Perks around, waiting a while before my character starts to feel strong? I don't think I do. Like I said earlier, I think I'd rather plan a character that will be quite quickly tough.

You have some good points. Im thinking building melee at the beginning would be beneficial since there are no good rifles as you mentioned. Melee makes me really nervous in survival though!

That gap closing perk for VATS is going to be essential

I think I'll just be tweaking more of the builds I normally use. Like, I don't think I'll be investing into Scrounger, since bullets will be heavier and it'll take fewer of them to kill things. I might invest those points into Lead Belly instead, though, depending on how much it helps against diseases and hunger.
