suspicious LUA Addons

Post » Mon Mar 10, 2014 3:20 pm

Hi together,

did you hear about addons which could be harmfull?

I mean addons for e.g. which

  • do in PvP automatic blocking
  • do aggresive guild-autoinviting
  • do IP-Sniffing or other malware-like things
  • steals performance because of
  • ++ syncing between raid-/campain members
  • ++ unlucky LUA Programming
  • ++ unintended side-effects
  • ...

What dou you think how should ZoS or the Addon-Publisher like Curse/EsoUI/Nexus etc. pp. handle this? Did you have found some kind of malicious LUA's?

BR, Chero

Addons only work how the API allows.

The things you are talking about sound more like hacks and exploits which can exist regardless of addon use or not. So of course ZOS will do what they can to stop hacking and exploiting that should go without saying.

This is why I was against UI add ons in the first place, and said there should be a simple ui editor a la SWTOR in game.

I think I am in not a position to tell how these guys should do their work. If ZOS appear in my office without invitation they fly out before they can say Cat...

I trust they do their work as best as they can with these issues as well.

Sounds more like paranoia and third party hacks.

SWTOR it was a necessity for the game devs to have this feature, SWTOR would have been more of a failure than it was if this was not in game. I prefer to have UI addons in every mmorpg i play only because the options are there if i need them for certain things.

There will be many badly written addons. The most harm an addon author should be able to do to you is slow down the game for you by overloading your network connection, cpu, and/or graphics card. If an addon can do anything worse than that, it's ZOS devs' fault.

Hacking the server or finding exploits in the game is something else entirely.

The more I think about it, your example would solve most if not all the problems.

Yea the UI editor in SWTOR was a grate idea and worked quite well. You have also a similar system in Rift. But I think ZOE whent for mods to save money TBH. Dump the UI programing on the free labor so we can crash in more money, YAY what a good idea!

Think you mean tolerant as intolerant would mean the threads would be locked within seconds.

No need to worry about adding anymore. According to people on the PTS, you can't even show your own health numerically anymore.
