I actually sided with the wood elf. But only because I'm an evil necromancer.

Sven, but only because I wanted to teach the Bosmer a lesson about trying to manipulate lovely ladies ;)

I informed Faendal of Sven's note, got the new note from Faendal, pickpocketed Sven's note back off of Faendal, and then presented the truth about both of those [censored]s to Camilla because that's what happens when you make me run your [censored] errands.

It sort of works in that you can actually inform Camilla about both notes. But then the game forces you to choose which dude to return to to complete the quest, and whoever you return to first ends up being the person you "helped". I got paid by Faendal, so that's who I "helped". Of course, now he has this schizophrenic opinion of me where half the time he's happy to see me and the other half he's pissed that I told Camilla the truth.

Faendal. Sven is useless as a companion, and arrogant; Faendal, while equally as conniving, at least is capable of some decent ranged combat.

I sided with Faendal because he just seemed like the more deserving guy.
You have Sven that does nothing but sleep and drink all day and hang out at the tavern to drink and sing all night. Doesn't do any real work around the town and lives at home with his mother.
Then you have Faendal. Who every time I see him walking around town he's hauling lumber in one direction or another, is a proficient enough archer to be qualified to teach other people. and has a place of his own... with plants outside so he is also a capable farmer.

Faendal to me is clearly the better man to champion for Camilla's affections in my book. Though they both are wrong for offering to stoop to the level of deception to 'seal the deal'. I didn't take that route my first character... I talked to Sven... thought he was a creep and told Camilla about the letter. But add in the fact that Sven's mother actually does his fighting for him since....
Spoiler
She hires thugs to attack you if you help out Faendal over her son
... pretty much everything about that guy just screams CHUMP, to me.

Spoiler
I think it's fairly obvious from Camilla's reaction if you tell her that Faendal forged a letter that Faendal never had a chance, Sven had a chance but only a little bit of one, considering the PC can conquer her heart with just doing that quest and an Amulet of Mara I think it speaks volumes about their real chances.

Sven. Having a bard following me around cracks me up. I wish I could make him stand in the middle of a dungeon and play his lute as a distraction. Also, he's not too bad in combat, and looks ADORABLE in his Stormcloak Officer's Uniform

Funny story: I chose Faendal and had him join up with me. Soon after, I tried to pickpocket Camilla. After her obligatory "you shouldn't have come here" line, she started slicing at me with her dagger. Faendal apparently decided that he loved my male dark-elf more and proceeded to kill her!

FREE archery training. Go with the elf, when you decide to get everything to 100 one day you will appreciate that.

To explain free archery training, as a follower you can train with him then go into his inventory and take the money back.

Sven seemed kind of light a pushy jerk, so I went with Faendal. I gotta say, the fake letter he writes 'from Sven' is pretty hilarious.

I sided with Fendael, then proceeded to kill him. Now Camilla is putting the moves on me every time I walk in to the store.

Faendal definitely. Hand Sven a two handed sword and two fireball staffs and he goes to in with the sword and then down to one knee crying like a baby. Hand Faendal the same and you should probably find some cover as he solos the dungeon.

I did that with Faendal! :D So I befriended him in that quest. He also gives free archery lessons (make him a companion, buy lessons, take back your septims)
