Swedish Gamereactor cover story

I knew that.

Good. Judging from your post I thought you might not have... In which case I felt I needed to correct that. Not being able to turn it off in Fallout 3 annoyed me to no end.

There wasn't a cinematic camera in Fallout 3 as far as I know, unless you are talking about Iron sights.
Never really bothered me in Fallout 3.

There was... Just about every time you killed anything using VATS it went into slow motion. Incredibly annoying. Wouldn't have been bad if they would have given me Iron Sights. Then I would have had zero reason to ever use VATS.

Ah, VATS, yeah after a while the slow motion did get rather tedious.
Especially when the camera followed the blown of heads.

Hmm, anyway, I think we should go back on-topic. :D

Thanks :)

About #2.
Oblivion was released in March 20, 2006.
It said in the Gamereactor cover story that the development of Skyrim started just a few months after that Oblivion had been released.
There's no exact date from what I know... but a few months should basically be in late spring, or early summer, or middle summer at its latest of 2006.

If I'm not completely wrong, I remember hearing that from Todd as well. I remember hearing him saying something like "we started right after Oblivion" or something like that.
It's not a big deal though. A few months here and there; Skyrim has been in development for a while :)

The reason I brought #2 in the topic was because I thought it would be pretty interesting, seeing that once Skyrim is released, it have been in development for over 5 years :P

Wasn't f3 released october 2008? If skyrim development started one year before than that would be very late 2007 pretty much beginning of 2008?

This is one of my sources:

This interview was conducted in Aug 2010
Eurogamer: You've been working on something secret now for two years. Do you have any sense yet of when you will be able to talk about it or even say what it is? Are going to be sat here next year answering the same question?

Todd Howard: I don't know [laughs]. I have a sense but we're not ready even to talk about that, because it might change. I don't want to disappoint people.

One thing I can say is that from when you first hear about it to when it's out will be the shortest it's been for us. It's pretty far along. When we show it, we want to show a lot, because there's a lot of game there to play right now.

You know, if Pete Hines came in and said, "I want you to show it," I'd be like, "Okay, I'm ready to show it." But we've just decided for now not to yet.

I've heard Todd say on several occasions that they split their development team 1 year before release to begin work on the next Game. In aug 2006 they were approx 1.5 years into the development of FO3. Skyrim development didn't begin until late 2007, approx 1 year before the release of FO3.

Thank you!
My favorite parts were no leveling scaling and the enemies actually have strategies and maneuvers :)

Best thing about this?

"7. “NO LEVEL SCALING”. Different enemies level up differently fast and different creatures have different “level-ceilings” (in other words, maximum level caps).""

almost sounds too good to be true :D

-snip-

oops, misread.

Either way I guess my remark still stands. I hope the dragons don't become the "fallout 3 super mutants" of Skyrim, ala "We were smart before, but now we're not. Die stooopoid human blllaaargh!"

I really hope you can actually talk to dragons and carry on a somewhat intelligent conversation before you get into the cliche dragon fight.

More likely they began brainstorming and developing ideas and concepts for the next ES game within months after Oblivion. Real development (with a separate team and dedicated resources) probably didn't start until later when they landed on final concepts.

Thanks for the info, OP :)

10. There will never be an Elder Scrolls online

Great news, the series should be and remain single player. No online, co-op, multiplayer is needed for this game.

I guess by some definitions, but in most companies, a product is in development when you have an agreed objective, specifications, plan and committed funds / resources to achieve the agreed plan.

I think Gamereactor perhaps misunderstood a bit. "Different enemies level up differntly fast" = level scaling, but of course to a reasonable and limited extent; like Fallout 3 (which was also confirmed by Gstaff before, who should be a safer source than any magazine).

So from what I see it, level scaling is in, but in a good way (like Fallout 3) :D
"Different enemies level up differently fast and different creatures have different “level-ceilings”" sounds just the way I like it, assuming they implement it correctly, which I think they will ... because of all the critisizm of Oblivion :P

Can anyone who can read Swedish tell me why they appear to be referencing Fable 3, GTA IV, and Call of Duty Black Ops in the video?

You mean in the German video linked in the first post?

Yes, I can explain their reason but no, I don't understand the logic ;)
The German mag obviously never played any other Elder Scrolls games because they wrote that some key features were implemented in Skyrim were inspired by other games. They name this features as learning by doing inspired by Fable, the open world inspired by GTA and the First Person View inspired bei Black Ops. That all of this feature were present from Arena/Daggerfall is not mentioned.

I'm pretty sure in the firstpodcast they said that they'd been working on Skyrim "Pretty much since Oblivion came out" and they just added the extra people from Fallout dev team a little while later.
