Sweeping and dusting etc.... If NPCs can do it, can I?

Post » Fri Feb 04, 2011 5:40 am

I know there is no point to us being able to pick up a broom and sweep the floor, but I was thinking that if the animators have gone to the trouble to creating the animations for NPCs, then why not let us sweep to our hearts content also? So I'm guessing that there may be some extra activities to soak up time, well I hope so anyways.

Well we can chop wood, which NPCs do as well. As long as someone would pay me to sweep, then I'd do it.

To sweep away the dyanamic dust that gathers realistically in your in-game house?

Why would you want to? Even if I'm going to do a job, I want it to be somewhat exciting and not just childhood chores. I play video games because you don't need to do mundane work like that.

To be able to do some of the same animations the npcs do? Cool. To actually sweep and dust? Not cool.

Not everything in the game needs to be useful, important. I'd like to think that games could include aspects which are purely there for if you want them, with no reward except you "yay, I can do that". Little things like this could (and I say could cause I have never been involved in the development of any game) go along way to increasing immersion and realism, in my opinion. It's not everyones flavor, I'll agree with that, but food for thought.

Only reason I can think of for a sweep animation is for when I'm taking screen shots of my character. Might be funny seeing him all decked out in armor doing stupid chores. :D

With that in mind, you just have to wonder whether time spent developing that could have been better spent making other things. There are games that cater more to "mundane" aspects of life, like the Sims, but Skyrim is an Action Adventure Fantasy RPG. Unless it's the most epic dust sweeping in the world with lives at stake, I don't want to consider it. This genre exists to replace the boring parts of everyday life, where you don't need to worry about things like keeping your personal belongings clean, whether or not you have a cavity, or if your armor is getting rusty. If NPC's want to do it, that's fine. They aren't protagonists, they don't care about being boring peasants. I just don't feel like playing a game where you're a boring peasant, it lacks excitement.

Sounds like a decent RP idea. I don't suppose it'd cost any extra resource to allow PCs to perform animations NPCs do. Not that a lot of player will choose to do it, but having that freedom can't hurt.
After playing TES4 for years and defeat daedras for many times, I needed little RP things to do.

It's not a question of whether or not I'd do it, it's a question of what they could have made instead of this.

Exactly, I'm surprised anyone would even mention this. Instead of dusting the floor they could develop another couple of spells or add a new item class.

Or they could develop a spell that enchants your broom and feather duster to dust for you every Thurdas!!!

That'd be awesome.

Seriously though, I think it would be a cool feature to have. So long as it's not a mandatory mundane task like feeding your fish in ME2 or else they'd die, it's fine with me.

I don;t mind spiffing up my house so that all my trophies and rainy day armor and enchanted swords I'm saving for that battle with that boss shine when I walk in.

It'd be a cool feature in the magical world where adding new features took no development time or resources whatsoever.

Actually, maybe even not then, as I don't plan on dusting my house every week, yet I don't want everything in there to be covered in dust when I neglect to do so. It's like games that have novelty pets that die when you don't feed them every day. I don't need to micromanage my character's personal life.

If I am weilding a broom and I press the button assigned to using it, I expect to swing it like a weapon thankyou. I will have many fun hours beating weak bandits with a broom.
