[RELz] Swiveller's Structures: Cabins and Docks

Post » Sun Jun 03, 2012 9:32 am

A new, high-res texture replacer for the cabins or 'shacks' and wooden docks that you find on the coast of Vvardenfell.

Download of version 1.1 from Planet Elder Scrolls:
http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=9518
Download of version 1.1 from Morrowind Modding History:
http://mw.modhistory.com/download-56-6930
Download of version 1.1 from Wolflore:
http://www.wolflore.net/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=1463 (direct link to my REL thread).

Version 1.1 removes the rogue alpha layers that had been added by the NVidia DDS plugin and tweaks one of the wood_barnacle textures. All of the files were re-encoded from the originals so as to prevent data loss.

I most definitely will; I do have a couple questions: What are you stipulations to the usage of your textures? And two, your textures, how do you get them? do you take the photos? Do you buy the photos? Or get them from those random free websites?

I mostly release my textures under a Creative Commons license which allows others to use them in their own projects. The readme contains all the details.

I often take my own photographs (as I did in this case - much of that wood is from actual cabins in Switzerland), but sometimes I will use photographs from sites such as Wikipedia and Mayang. Mayang want you to change the image substantially before releasing it, however, so they're not always a viable source. I've never paid for an image as I've never needed to - the varied landscape of Western Europe provides lots of surfaces to work from. :-) I imagine it would be different if I lived in a drier area, but there's plenty of sand, mud & lichen-infested rock around here. Also, there is so much you can get under a Creative Commons license that there is rarely a real need to use commercial websites.

Some elements I create from scratch - Photoshop can do wonders if you know how to combine layers with fx functions. :-)

Creative Commons is at http://creativecommons.org/ - however, which type of CC license do you mean, Mr. Swiveller?

OK, here you go guys. It's a bit easier to read if you use the PDF that comes with the archive, but basically the last license referred to in the list is the one that applies to a texture. CCASA=CCAS. Should change that in a future version of the readme file.

Note that Grunge textures changed their license AFTER I downloaded and used it. When I first made the tx_metal textures in this pack (and added them to my mods) the base images were available under a Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial license.

Copy the *.dds files from the 'textures' folder in this archive to your Morrowind\Data Files\Textures folder, and allow Windows to overwrite. I recommend backing up your textures folder first, so that you can revert to the previous situation if you should wish to do so.

Ah. Final question; I have come across some that have two-license one is the free to use [some rights reserved], and a [request to license, license]

I really don't get what it means to have two of them. . . . .

Swiv, your file has been approved over on GHF. You're welcome to upload it to Wolflore - our general section doesn't require registration to view and download files.

You said you had screenshots in the archive, but I didn't find any. :(

Hi Jac - sorry about the confusion, and thank you for approving the mod. :-)

The screenshots should be on the same page as the download link - i.e., at Fliggerty's.

I'll drop by Wolflore, too.

It seems to be an awesome texture replacer like the others of yours Mr. Swiveller. Downloading for sure, the only thing that makes me feel sad is that i'm 1000 miles away from my Morrowind folder :turned: and cannot try this replacer right now. Thank you!

edit:typo

2nd edit: it always makes me feel happy seeing how old cool modders-veterans release something new, pushing Morrowind appearance to a next level of awesomeness.

Sorry, I don't mean to sound ignorant, but what does this mean? All I know is that an alpha channel is a layer, not whether it is bad, good or otherwise. In fact, unless it's damaged, isn't it better to have an alpha channel than to not have one?

Haha, thanks. :-) It's quite cool to be thought of as a 'modder-veteran' - my contribution to Morrowind modding has been fairly modest, although I've always enjoyed crafting new stuff for this game.

I am seeing an alpha layer on a couple texture I checked.

There's a transparency layer on the tx_shack_thatch_strip texture, if that is what you mean. Without it you wouldn't be able to see through the gaps between the leaves. If there are any problems you noticed please try to be specific as otherwise I won't be able to fix them. I've not had any issues with these myself (and I can't think of any that would be caused by alpha layers...).

[EDIT 4 - The Photoshop NVidia plugin appears to have generated non-active alpha layers on most of these textures. This is odd as nearly all of these textures are DXT 1 4bpp no alpha files. I don't think the alpha layers have any function; they contain noise that is not visible in-game. I will leave them where they are for the time being.]

As those of you who have been reading this thread will know, many of the textures in this pack contain an alpha layer that appears to have no function. I've just found out that this is caused by a bug in recent versions of the Photoshop DDS plugin (http://developer.nvidia.com/nvidia-texture-tools-adobe-photoshop). A fix was released by NVidia a few days ago. I will re-encode the original files and upload an update to Morrowind Modding History and Wolflore. I hope I can also get PES to work - it has always been a safe haven for my work.

Note that the extra alpha layer appears to be completely inactive; the textures should appear in-game as intended.

Fixed version with minor texture tweaks available from the Morrowind section over at Wolflore. I will add a new Morrowind Modding History link once I figure out how to update my mods there.
