[WIPz] Swiveller's Sundries: Dunmer City Banners

Post » Wed Jun 13, 2012 8:04 pm

A project to replace the Dunmer city and shop banners. May also include great houses.

SHOPS

Alchemist

Goods

Tavern

The Clothier's shop sign/banner utilises a lighter, brown font colour which will likely also be incorporated in the Alchemist's sign.

Thanks guys.

I've been trying to do something similar for the Dunmer shop signs, but I will likely have to redraw those completely. They don't layer as well as do the town banners.

Do you mean the Great House banners? I can try, but they are likely more difficult to transfer to a high-res cloth texture as they contain more detail. I'll finish the cities first, then see what I can cook up for the other banners.

EDIT - The Telvanni banner seems OK; I should be able to transfer that one quite easily. Some of the Ashlander banners are 'sloppily' drawn, with double lines and scratches. I am contemplating remaking them on paper, then scanning them.

I finally bit the bullet and bought a Wacom tablet. Once I figure out how it works I should no longer have to rely on my scanner to get drawings into the game. NZdawghaus has also kindly sent me a few files that may help developing these banners a bit faster.

Experiment -

Based on the original design. I think I am going to aim for something completely different. The original doesn't look too appealing in higher resolution, and neither does my version of it.

EDIT

Possible alternative (rotated)

I am almost sure the original is trying to be a mushroom, perhaps if it was less crude? And those are perhaps other alchmical ingredients around it, but no idea what.

The first one is great..

what i meant by unique is like a tavern mod that i saw a while ago, say fighters guild X had a different banner than fighters guild Y..

Thanks Jac, Tronvillain and P?O_KILO.

@ Tronvillain - that's an interesting idea. Let's see if it looks more attractive if I try to make it look more like a mushroom.

@ P?O_KILO - Not sure if I'll get round to doing variations; first let's see if I can cobble together a full replacer. :-)

Haha, thanks Chaka - and good to see you again. :-)

New version - this is likely the one that you're going to see in the replacer.

Very nice indeed! :goodjob: I particularly like the cloth texture of your banners. Will this be a direct texture replacer, or will it require a plug-in?

Great banners Swiveller! Could I make a request that you release your blank banner base and possibly some other images which may be useful for people to use to create matching signs for their own projects (like the divider-type things, can't think of a word for them, too tired)?

I'm happy that you're trying to emulate the original designs (which is what I generally go for in a replacer). I would be curious to see some optional versions which take some more creative license with the design too though; like this http://s157.photobucket.com/albums/t68/Mr_Swiveller/?action=view¤t=tx_bannerd_alchemy_01-1.jpg.

This is a direct replacer.

Not yet. Perhaps once I have my own angle on these. Currently I am mostly copying the original designs. Usually I only start doing a retex once I have a clear idea of what I would like a building or landscape to look like (I've recently been taking pictures of ancient tiles for a Mournhold replacer :-) ). This time around I was just struck by the contrast between my high-res Telvanni textures and the low-res banner textures.

is the alchemist name supposed to have slightly darker colour in comparison with the simbol?

Good question. I'm not completely happy with the current text colour and Photoshop does allow you to change it to something else, like the colour of the symbol or lines. The original has black letters that look somewhat like Greek script, but they're small and don't actually appear to say anything.

Yes, I likely will.

I accidentally deleted that one, but it should be easy enough to recreate. I am still in doubt as to whether a more intricate design would be a good idea; I guess clarity is the single most important thing if you're a shopkeeper who wants to sell something (and there are no competitors anyway).
