Chapter One-Johnny Appleseed-
Sun beat down on Johnny as he made his way up the dirt road, wiping a bead of sweat from his brow he cursed under his breath and continued along the road. In the distance he heard the loud mooing of a lone Brahmin, looking in the direction of the sound he saw a man take aim with a shotgun. Firing off a quick shot, the beast fell. Johnny paused for a moment and watched as the man proceeded to lean over the dead Brahmin and start to skin it. When he had watched enough Johnny cracked his neck, adjusted his backpack, and headed up the road towards the small town on the horizon.
Eventually he passed by a large wooden sign with crude black paint reading ‘Welcome to Hammersmith’ as he walked past the sign Johnny began to mouth the name ‘Hammersmith’ over and over, he knew that if he was going to make this his new home then he’d need to at the very least know its name. Up in the distance on the top of a small hill, a building stood, rising above the rest of the town. Johnny figured that it was the home of whoever controlled Hammersmith. Walking silently up the road he took note of all the buildings he passed, most of them were just dilapidated shacks which were made with whatever the occupants could salvage. However there were a select few which were notably more pleasing to the eye, passing by one of these buildings Johnny heard the familiar sound of people talking to each other.
Among the things they talked about, Johnny noted how they all spoke about this stranger walking up the only road in town. About how he looked differently than all the rest, his face lightly dusted with dirt, his clothes tattered and held together with patches of other clothes, how his face was covered with stubble and his long brown hair fell messily around his ears and over his eyes. Johnny couldn’t blame them for talking about him that way, indeed he would have joined along with them if he were witnessing a complete stranger rolling into town without any explanation. Ignoring their words and confusion Johnny kept walking like he always had, stopping at the bottom of the hill Johnny came face to face with a man who wore a freshly cleaned and well worn piece of leather armor, he stood a good foot taller than Johnny and his dark brown eyes seemed to pierce into Johnny’s soul. At his side a large black six-shooter rested in its holster, on his other side was a canteen.
At first the man stared at Johnny with an intensity that would have made a weaker man cower in fear, Johnny stood tall and returned an equally intimidating stare. Seeing this the man's lips began to curl into a smile. Extending his hand, Johnny shook it cautiously.
“So what brings you to Hammersmith stranger?” asked the man,
“I’m looking for a new home,” replied Johnny who adjusted his pack once more and stood in silence. Smiling the man replied warmly,
"Then welcome to Hammersmith. I'm the mayor Abraham Hoffman, but most folk's just call me Hoffman."
More of chapter one will come tomorrow. Also some things to note
-Hammersmith is located roughly where Adairville is in RL, and as such is near the border of Tennessee
-Hammersmith and all characters are my own creation
-There is going to be a theme with the titling of the chapters, as well as the title of the book. Try to figure it out.
