sys_MaxFps command bug? input lag with vsync 120hz monitor?

Post » Sun Dec 11, 2011 10:51 am

For some odd reason I can't find any # that will cap the framerate at 75. Any number I try from 72 to 75 results in capping to 77. It won't cap to 72, 73, or 74 either, but it caps at 71 fine! Reason I want 75 is to reduce screen tearing. First I thought Fraps was misreading but the tearing looks exactly the same on 72-75 (couple large tears). 71 shows multiple tears, so Fraps isn't lying. Has someone successfully capped at 75 without vsync?
Vsync causes input lag and I simply won't go that route unless I get an answer to my next question....

Does vsync-ing on a 120hz monitor get rid of all input lag? I heard it does. Can't find much info about it on Google. I'm sick of choosing between tearing and input lag. There's gotta be a fix for this :/

I checked out limiting fps at 72-75 and it does jump to 77. It used to not do that. Are you sure your 460 can keep 120+ fps at all times? I've never tried vsync on a 120hz monitor, but vsync has always caused input lag on a 60-75hz monitor. Have you tried limiting fps to a different number to correct the tearing? Limiting it will not cause the input lag like vsync does.

My 460 cannot keep 120+ fps. If the monitor refreshes 120 times and the framerate is capped to something playable (55-60), then 120 fps shouldn't be needed. I've tried changing my monitor to 60hz and limiting fps to 60... that still didn't work. It stayed at 59 and all the tearing were bunched up together in a big slow tear... the most distracting tear I've ever seen, lol. So now I'm back at 75hz and 77 fps. Just gonna deal with the fast tearing till I actually get my hands on a 120hz monitor. Thanks for your reply.

I've got 120Hz monitors and can confirm that you will notice much less mouse-lag with Vsync enabled, even if you aren't getting framerates that high.

Because of the way most games use to keep track of mouse movements, it's directly tied into the refresh rate.

Some games are worse than others, and I don't enable vsync still, but I've found myself using it in most games since I got these 120Hz panels.
