Probably won't see anything until September or October. I think if you get something close to the top today, you should be fine in 6 months from now. I have a HD5870 in my system and it does a fantastic job on every game. My processor is starting to show it's age though, E8400 Core 2 Duo!

EDIT: I feel I should add this card didn't break my bank account either. HD6970 might not be a bad way to go for an ATI card. I don't know much about Nvidia. Can't help you there, sorry.

my cpu and mem should be fine (12GB and quad core nehalem). only running a 4850 on the vid card though and feel it might be a bit weak for higher settings on skyrim. which means i may need a psu upgrade too.

Ah yeah, honestly, I think if you went for something like a HD6970 you'd be fine. ATI is typically pretty good about power management as well considering I was running Crossfire HD3870s before I upgraded to a single HD5870 card. EDIT: this was all on a 500 watt Antec PS.

My suggesttion is to check out the http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/2011-gaming-graphics-charts/benchmarks,123.html, they'll help you decided the price for performance.

I.. I see the future!
The CPU will need to be a dual core one...
RAM? Minimum Shall be 1 GB Windows XP, 2 GB Vista and 7!
I dunno aobut the video thingies...
It will be compatitable with Windows XP, Vista and 7!
Aaand it will take around 8-15 GB space... Maybe more.
Oh and keep it a secret: I will ask for a new PC before my birthday.

If your going to upgrade your card you might as well buy the best one you can. Your best bet is to either buy one highend card for $350ish, or two lesser cards for Xfire or sli. This way you will know you've got skyrim covered, and anything in the next couple of years(for the most part).

You could save money, and buy a card that will easily play skyrim, but then down the road regret not just buying the best you could have that would also have had a longer life. I personally buy a card once every 2-3 years. I had a gtx275, then just recently bought a 570. I couldn't be happier, and I don't see myself having to think about an upgrade anytime soon.

Make a budget, save, wait a month before release, read every review on the best cards out in Ur budget, then pull the trigger!

How many more threads do we need on this subject?

Thankfully, I am all set regardless. I just hope we have native eyefinity and/or NV surround support.

do you think we need another? i can start another if you think there are not enough! can never have enough threads talking about hardware don't you know.

seriously i was asking if anyone had seen any 'official' updates and what the minimum/recommended specs were gonna be. since i haven't seen any updates is there any problem with me asking since no one has asked in quite awhile?

Don't worry, when the specs are released there'll be a torrent of threads saying "I can't believe skyrim only requires this to run, I blame consoles" and "What about us lower-end people, bethesda, are we not customers too", regardless of what the actual specs are. But you'll notice them.

LOL probably too true.

i guess since consoles can't be upgraded they really can't get too far past what the specs for oblivion were.

Probably anything from the 5800 series should hold over well for skyrim. I just tested my 5830 last night and the only game i couldnt max with it was metro 2033.
You would do better with a 5850 or 5870 though, they have better perfirmance and power management.

Awhile? Someone just posted this morning in one of the http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1148315-pc-requirement-guesses/ 'PC Requirements" threads. Seriously, this forum would be a lot easier to read if people read more than they posted.. way too much duplication of speculation going on.

Chances are it will have the same requirements as Fallout: New Vegas, with maybe the exception of having a DirectX 11 video card in the recommended list. It sounds like they'll be using at least some DirectX 11 features, though it will mainly be a DirectX 9 title.
