Taking a Break...

So anyway, it's become increasingly apparent that my experience of Oblivion has become more of a technical exersize than an actual Gameplay one.
This is ultimately unsatisfying, therefore I've chiselled the disc out of my drive and put it away for a while. I'm going to play - (actually play) - Skyrim instead.
When I come back to Oblivion I'm just going to start again and try and make it a rather simpler experience than it currently is!!

You know what I think, Niamh? I think you'll be back. You lot always come back...

But seriously yea that happens from time to time. Have to tear it all down and build back up again until the game becomes unstable again. Hard finding a sweet spot. Take a break and approach a new setup with a fresh set of eyes.

So what are you saying? Will you come up with a new character?

Nope, always Niamh - it's Niamh in Skyrim too.
I'll start again, after having stripped a lot of stuff out and basically once the initial set up is there I won't allow myself to add anything else because it was just getting silly.
I'm adopting this approach with Skyrim...

That's the thing. I'm tending to bounce back and forth from Oblivion and Skyrim, back and forth. I get the best of both worlds. After the first couple months of solid Skyrim I did need a break from it. Not cuz I was getting bored, but just for perspective.

By the way everyone, for those who don't know, go to www.chorrol.com and sign up. Chorrol's Skyrim forums are full of polite people (like us) but they're a little too slow. Would be nice to see some of you guys there (especially you, Phon) if you're not signed up already. I know Grits and Acadian are already over there.

I've the same feeling. I enjoy the variety of mods out there, but my game's so modded it feels like it's just too much. I was considering reinstalling the game and only using patches to fix things up. No additional mods.

Aww that's a shame. But if you're heading to Skyrim, you'd be very welcome to drop in and say hello to my nord http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l528/Lady-Mara-2/Achilles2.jpg and his wife Aela. It might be a little crowded in his house, what with another resident there too, but Aela makes a mean stew.

I'm sure you'll love Skyrim as much as you love Oblivion, but I know you'll be back. Me and Renee were, after all.

I actually never left Cyrodiil, not spiritually.

I remember before 11/11/11. I was caught up in the hype of the new game. I was assuming (and a bit afraid) I would wind up abandoning Oblivion for a very long time.

But the moment I started Skyrim, the moment I was on my own that is (out of the initial dungeon) I felt a sense of relief. I wouldn't abandon Cyrodiil after all...I just knew I wouldn't! The new game had lots of cool things for sure, but Oblivion/Cyrodiil still would give me pleasure, too. And some pain. Some pain mixed with pleasure is okay.

Never mind.

I think I know what you mean. I don't have nearly as many mods in my OB install as some folks, but it does change the feel of the game. Of course, it changes it largely for the *better*, or I wouldn't have 'em in the first place.

But it was also nice to start up Skyrim and play a purely vanilla game - everything is strictly "canon", and you don't have to worry about juggling compatibility. We intend to get mods for Skyrim, but will probably wait at least until the GOTY edition, with all expansions/DLC.

I did the same thing. I took a break from Skyrim to play Oblivion for a few weeks. Now I'm headed back to Skyrim.

go to www.chorrol.com and sign up.
I'm not enough of a forum-hopper to post in two fan sites. I'm already part of http://tesalliance.org/. But I have heard that Chorrol is nice, too.

Good luck, I'm playing Oblivion one night and Skyrim the next. They're both great games, but I think I prefer Oblivion a bit more. And I'm playing it pretty much vanilla (I just can't survived without UL!) and am enjoying it a whole lot more than I expected, its good to come home from Skyrim.

When I get burned out on my present activities in Oblivion, I just resurrect one of my 3 or 4 year old characters that I left stranded for the same reason you are leaving - and I have a lot of them. For example, I recently resolved the problem of my 2008 2nd character’s inability to buy the Skingrad house and am now having a ball doing whatever she wants to do for the day. My dozen or so characters are so spread out over so long a time, and therefore learning curve, that they offer a lot of unique challenges to bring them up to the present state of affairs. Occasionally, I even go to Fallout 3 for a few weeks, but I haven’t done that in six months or so.

Don’t stay away in Skyrim for too long.

@tmar I can imagine that must be awesome, going back to characters you haven′t been with for many years. Almost makes me regret I never made more characters besides Lothran...

Spoiler
Nah!

I won't.
Although Niamh, I think, is relishing the change as well - although she's not entirely certain how she got there, or why, if truth be told...
I think we'll have to sit down and work that out.
It is definitely her though - the signs are all there - random violence, a tendency to sneak about, a disdain for authority and the usual lack of any compulsion to wear sensible clothes... :D
