[IDEA] Talk to me!

Post » Thu Mar 11, 2010 3:14 am

So, I got this idea today. What if NPCs accosted the player and asked for rumors and services and such? In other words, once in a while an NPC will walk up to you and ask what the latest rumors are, if you've got a little secret, etc. And maybe even low-disposition NPCs can talk to the player - verbal abuse, insults, taunts.

For rumors, you would only be able to relay a rumor that you've heard (they are recorded in your journal, after all), and your responses would be filtered such that you couldn't tell a rumor that is generated in the region you are in. For instance, if there is a rumor that is specific to Ald'rhun, you wouldn't be able to tell anyone in Ald'rhun that rumor, because everyone there would already know it!

I can also imagine how members of your own faction would want to chat with you. Perhaps dialog can be included where they ask you about a recent mission/quest you were on, and you can tell them about it (maybe even impress them?).

Of course, to make all this actually interesting (as opposed to a rehash of them asking (and hearing) the same things you ask and hear), there could be new information...? Maybe you could even start a rumor.

So, yeah, it's just an idea.

Discuss! :)

It's easily possible...

You'd just have to find someone who has good with dialogue to write it. The general idea could work. It would take some work to make it flow together, though.

That would really highlight just how weird it is that Morrowind dialogue is pretty much limited to those specific topics. To avoid an immersion break, I suggest making the dialogue as natural and varied (random100 and maybe by class) as possible.

Maybe add some other things too, besides just the normal topics. For the most part I like this idea.

I'm no modder, really. I'm just kind of dipping into the modding world a little bit with ideas in tweaking game mechanics.

But would there be a way to make the class-specific things based on what your class's "specialization" is instead? Because most people I know play custom classes, and I think a chunk of the dialog going missing for most players would take a little bit from the mod. Just an idea, at least.

The LGNPC mods do a lot to make rumours and similar topics unique and varied, and only available when certain unknown criteria are met. Your idea, Alaisiagae, is a really good on, and it's the next logical step in the evolution of dialog.
I'm going to open the CS right now and see what I can come up with.
Imagine a ForcedGreeting from Fargoth, whining about his ring to every newcomer that walks out of the Census office! That would be better than having to ask him about it. :)

You can't do Class variables like that, but you could make it so only people with a high Long Blade or Alchemy skill (etc.) get certain dialog.

I've always wanted dynamic conversation, and with Morrowind, it would be relatively easy to make considering the only difficulty is writing the actual diolauge. About people talking to you, I think it would make the world seem a lot more alive, for instance, your about to head out of town for a quest but then some "old friend" wants to chat, and you just wanna get out of there, or you come back to a town you haven't been to in a while and people want to catch up.

So as far as making the mod, I could try and lend a hand when I had time, I love writing diolauge, I just never end up doing so. :)

Yeah, I feared that. But basing it off skill levels could still be a good idea. Character level in the way people treat you (for instance, low level/stats being treated like more of a rookie) might also make sense.

I'd think the skill based conversation would be cool, lets say you are good at alchemy, then possibly NPC's learning about it would ask you for help etc. asking you like "do you know how to make a restore health potion?" or something, and maybe you could chat with people around your skill about all the cool alchemy tricks and whatnot.

Man, I'm getting exited, this would be great! If we had LGNPC for every city, plus dynamic conversation, man, that would be cool.

Yes! NPCs could pay you for training them in skills that you are good at. Very cool.

I would definitely lend a hand in this mod's creation. Dialog is my strong suit and it would be fun.
(if I ever finish my own mod that is)

Oh, wow, it is a feasible idea? Awesome. :ooo:

Now, I have zero experience doing dialog. Actually, I've tried it once, and it was such an utter mess that Jac kindly stepped in and offered to help (the Tribunal Crafting Additions mod). I don't think I'd be able to do this mod at all, it really isn't in my (limited) line of expertise. I just had an idea and wanted to share and discuss it - anyone can pick it up and make a mod. :)

What I meant was the NPC's class. Like people might have different attitudes and questions as different classes. Like a commoner on the roads would be more likely to ask "I'm lost, where am I?" than a scout on the roads.

Anyways, if any modders want to take a shot at this, it's just a matter of interrupting the voice dialogues with an invisible entry and launching a "ForceGreeting" from it.

--Actually, thinking this over a little and realizing that this would be much easier to mod than it seems, and just how much fun it might be to try... I think I'll do this.
All I need are suggestions on what kind of questions could be asked.

I think it would be neat if some slaves could ask for their freedom. It would need to have a trigger dependent on the player being at a high enough level for it to make sense. Also, it would be kind of obnoxious to be accosted by slaves who can't actually be freed normally, so it would only work well on the ones that have slave keys in the same cell.

Lines

Npc: Excuse me "PCclass", what's time? I can't for my life seem to read the sun accordingly.

Npc(Filter for not in balmora): Could you tell me what Balmora is like?, I always wanted to go there.

Npc(Disp 80-100/female): How do I look?

Npc(If npc & pc is in thieves guild): Psst... you there! I see you and I have something in common. Speak up, where is the closest place I can sell my wares?

Npc(High class, filter for small towns): I don't think to highly of these settlements, what's your take on "Current city)?

Just speculation of course.

This is a great idea. I'd love to interact with NPC's who speak to me first.
How about a disposition bump to the ones that you offer positive/accurate information/statements to?
Maybe a disposition drop for ones that you're rude to/lie to...(?)

As far as making up rumors, that sounds cool. But that's a huge task, depending.
I'll be looking forward to it.

We could even toss in a Radiant-esque features (we'd need a better name, though ;) ) for NPCs conversing with each other. Even chain things together to make it make sense.
Having NPCs greet the player is easy. Just use ForceGreeting. Even greeting one another wouldn't be too hard with MWSE.

Edit: Irradiant AI! That way, if they do something stupid or start glowing in the dark, there's already an excuse. :P

I'd definetly give this a download if it came out. I can't even begin to imagine how much something like this would add to the immersion of MW.

The only thing I liked about oblivion (next to magic casting) was that the NPCs greeted each other and stuff. Now if this was included in Morrowind.

It wont be as easy for NPCs to greet each other. It'd have to be done in messageboxes. You could get used to it, but at first it might be annoying.

Hmm, I know there is some voiced dialog, like when they mumble to themselves or greet the player. I wonder if there are enough of them that two strung together would make sense?

Or, at least have NPCs walking past each other stop and pretend to talk, perhaps with a new idle animation? There could be various ones that have the NPC make gestures - violent, flirting, enthusiastic, that sort of thing. Heh, and if the Player Character stands around near an NPC for too long, he/she can look at you and go "Why don't you do a Soul Trap, it'll last longer?" :P
