TalkyMorrowind (OBLIVION-style dialogs)

Post » Sun Aug 22, 2010 4:16 pm

I have great news for all the people, who supposes that there are some good features in TES IV: Oblivion, which should be used in Morrowind. One of these features - dubbed dialogs. Now it is in available with Morrowind! Well, almost available...

This project has started on 17.9.2008, when VICSHANN published his program called TalkyMorrowind. It turns Morrowind text dialog into Oblivion-style voice dialogs. It uses specially encoded mp3 files, storing the data about NPC's race, gender & ID (if necessary). The missing files are generated with the help of voice modules such as Microsoft Sam or any other chosen. Also it makes camera show the NPC's face during the conversation and makes NPC's lips move and eyes - blink while speaking.

Now we are testing the program looking for minor bugs.

The project is in the very beginning, thus we have just started making russian sound files. We also have no complete command to finish this project. Actually, we have only a person for acting khadjits (your humble servant). Thus, although VICSHANN has fixed almost all detected bugs, now we have only digitally modulated dialogs in game, but not the real voice.

So, if you are interested in making Morrowind sound - you are welcome!

Here is the link to the Russian-language forum thread devoted to this project: http://forum.fullrest.ru/index.php?showtopic=20182
And this is the link to VICSHANN's home page:http://vicshann.narod.ru/

P.S.: If you don't know russian you may ask everything you are interested in - I'll try to answer.

Wonderful! Honestly I'm loving the recent work coming from our brothers and sisters in Russia. From the Better Armors and Better Creatures to this. Wish I could help, but my spoken Russian is 10 years rusty, but I was at no time good at reading. Cheers to you mates.

I don't quite understand how you have accomplished this o_O But the features sound awesome.

Speaking of which. You are saying you need voice actors?

Tested this with the synthetic voices; they are quite ok actually... Slightly game breaking the times when you hear that they are synthetic; however the whole lipsynch and zoom feature is awesome. This will become a big thing! =)

For others... I'm babelfishing in their forum, some things i came up with:
*They are thinking about using MGE for proper zoom on npc camera. Right now there is a bug where the camera will go down to the NPCs feet.
*It already works with english, only it is synthetic voices(Computer made).
*I think they have some kind of option for choosing what mods to do this with, so if you wish to maintain normal dialogue through text.

So this is an external program that is used in the background when playing Morrowind, kind of like MGE or FPS Optimizer?

Yes. Running it, it looks like it's some kind of loader. It can load different DLL files & it also detects MGE and a bunch of other things.

Sounds really cool. Although sometimes the dialogues in MW are very long, it?s ok to read it, but to have to listen to would become quite annoying eventually. But I guess there is the possibility to cancel the spoken dialogue and just read it for yourself?

The bug with camera's wrong behavior is already fixed - it was caused by the conflict with Better Bodies. Now it works correctly. However, there are still some minor bugs VICSHANN working on.

As for videos, I'll make them in an hour or so. But it would use russian version.

Yes, we are looking for voice actors both for russian and english versions.

The language in the video wouldn't really matter, as long as it shows the core principles of the mod it would be great.

I can't upload the video! YouTube reports about some strange error. If anybody knows what's the problem - please help me with uploading this file! I can send you the archive with video (48,7 mb) to e-mail...

Thank you for all the effort. :-)

I don't have a Youtube account, but could you perhaps use a site like Megaupload as a temporary solution?

The more impossible the mod for Morrowind the more possible it becomes.
Very impressive.

Well, here is the movie on RuTube. Talky Morrowind

Whoa. Just watch it and.. seriously this blows my mind. It's identical to the famous and well-develop system voice-system in Oblivion. I have this crazy idea, but bare with me. Add vality7s Mod + MGE + Connary textures and Darknut's weapon replacer, a few other popular fix. And add this plug-in with some decent voice-actors and put them to the popular NPCs in Vvardenfell. You can rap up a game that really puts TES: IV to the test. -- This is just the thing that is missing. I love to hear more about this project.

Further more, I think this is perfect tool for the Morrowind forum friends and users to contribute to. There are so many characters out in Morrowind and (like in real-like) none should have the same voice. If you have a good/bad/high- or low-pitch tone, dark or light sense of humor. We are all different, thats so special about us. For this idea I would suggest of scratching up a list where people can sign-up and do their "part".

But. hey. That's just my little idea.

PS: If you(rhymer) feel comfortable with this suggestion, but need some help with it "direct, ,control, organize, find people" and such. I'm happy lend you my assistance.

I was skeptical at first, but it looks really good from what I could see in that video. This has lot's of potential, though it's not going to easy obviously. And you won't be able to voice the player name/class/rank in the sentences (unless you use microsoft sam for that :P), so if lines using those were to be voice acted as well it would be difficult.

Maybe this could be applied to the existing mods that add voice acting to several NPC's like Vivec and Dagoth Ur. But I don't know if their mouths can move...

Either way, another wonderful achievement from the Russian modding community. We love you guys! :foodndrink:

The players name could simply be changed to a simple pronoun, or instead a title (e.g. Fighter's Guild members adressing you by rank, or everyone adressing you as the Nerevarine after the MQ).

Or just do a split dialogue. Don't say anything it all. I think it could work best.

Welcome to the ES forums Vicshann. This is really interesting work =) No questions here, I gather you need voice actors, a huge amount of them o_O

The synthetic voices work so-so. Sometimes they speak pretty well, and sometimes they are very mechanic.
