Tamagotchi Mode

Post » Thu Apr 21, 2011 8:59 am

The idea behind a so called hardcoe mode is cool and well founded. For that reason I was excited that it was included in the horribly made New Vegas and ,of course, it fail to live up to the hype. If Skyrim implemented this I am sure it would be in the same fashion as NV. I know I would'nt have to play Skyrim with it on but I still don't even want the option! And why you ask? Because all that's involved is feeding, hydrating, and sleeping. What's so "hardcoe" about that? It's makes your character into a glorified Tamagotchi. It also takes away from the world that's meant to be explore leisurely not in a frantic search for food and water. Busy work is all it is. Same as Tamagotchis. Agree?

I love the Tamagotchi comparison! I don't agree with denying people the option, though. I find hardcoe mode to be a bit silly, but if a lot of others want that then they should be able to.

New Vegas was bad? Im playing it now, and im playing it on hardcor. I love this game on hardcoe. I think it adds a bit of realism and also adds more time into the game.Sure it could have some more parts added into it but still, I think its pretty great.

hardcoe mode is cool. Heck, it shouldn't be toggle-able besides at character creation; as such it'll force you to go into inns and etc.

It was impossible to keep one of those [censored] things alive for more then a single day.Good comparison none the less nonetheless,I looked forward to hardcoe but it became too much of a pain in the ass(ammo weight svcks),so I got the achievement and never used it again. Skyrim is not the type of game for out of the box hardcoe, mods certainly but no real reason to take away from cooler stuff to include it.

I mostly agree with your post, except for one thing. Frantic search for food and water? It was so plentiful that it was easy to find.

I like calling it Tamagachi mode, though. It's better than what I tend to refer to it as. Nuisance mode. While I do play with it on, the biggest impact I feel from it is that I have less inventory space. That's probably because of ammo weight, mostly.

It seems to me that adding the need to sleep, eat and drink was the entire point of hardcoe mode in New Vegas, you see, some people WANT that sort of thing. Now, I'm not one of them, but I thought it was great those who do want that sort of thing had the option to have it, because it means they can be satisfied, thus giving them no legitimate reason to complain about that subject further, while I don't have to have that sort of thing in my game, everyone wins, basically, except those who liked the concept of hardcoe mode but didn't like it's implementation, suppose, but that's another subject, and also crazy people who think everyone should not have options to play the game in a way they don't want to play, but they're not worth listening to. Though I do agree it shouldn't be called "hardcoe mode" if it's included in Skyrim, because the term "hardcoe" just sounds out of place in a fantasy game. That word may invoke a number of things, but a psuedo-Medieval sword and sorcery game is NOT one of them. I'd call it "survival mode" or something, because it seems like it describes what it is.

That's hilarious!

OT: Well maybe they have had time to fine tune it and make it better than in NV. If it is a toggable option, why not.

I agree with this.

Then they can change the name to TES V: Man vs Wild. :D

I love the Tamagotchi comparison, but disagree with most of the rest of your post. There was no frantic search for food and water. The weighted ammo affected gameplay a heck of a lot more than the hunger/thirst/sleep system. All three drained so slowly that they were barely noticeable. There should be more effects than just a standard debuff. Things like blurred or darkened vision as your character gets more tired, or maybe a penalty to stealth due to a growling stomach as your character gets more hungry (Metal Gear Solid 3 anyone?). Any effect that's more interesting than "-1 agility".

It's no shock that the first time they implement it wasn't quite as polished as it could be.

hardcoe is the proper title for a theme such as Fallouts. In the ES universe food and water is abundant. In the Fallout universe it isn't (well, in the game it was, but the reality of the world is that it probably shouldn't be). Try reading The Road. Or just watch the movie. In a dieing world, you would spend your life just trying to get those three things.

I've never suffered ill effects for more than a few hours in FONV due to its food and water mechanics in hardcoe mode, and that suffering never escalated above minor starvation/dehydration. It's not that hard to find food or water, even in the wastes.
Also, it's only busy work if that's what you frame it in. Personally, I look at it as a quest or adventure in itself, wondering if I'm going to make it to a destination in time to keep myself alive and planning to ensure that I most likely will. I'm not always so enthusiastic about it in the moment, but that's true for most things in games.

And in Morrowind and Oblivion, whenever I enforced eating/drinking/sleeping through mods or through playstyle, I usually only had problems for the first few levels and then was fine. And it was just as fun there as in NV, there's something about having to pawn a bandit's dirty leather boots just for a bite to eat and maybe a place to stay for the night that accents the whole experience.

I'd prefer a more, eating, sleeping, and instead of thirst *since there's a bunch of lakes and you know snow everywhere* more of a warmth bar since it is freezing in some areas.

Yeah with a check for what kind of clothes you are wearing that makes it move slower the heavier the clothing is.

I never frantically searched the wasteland for anything. Drinking twice a day, eating once, and sleeping once a week was a non-issue.

I remember playing with those key-chain pets all the time when I was little, mainly because we didn't have money for anything else.

I would not be opposed to a really well differentiated difficulty tier system.

Options > Gameplay > Modes

Difficulty
[________<>________]

[ ] Fable Mode
[ ] The Sims Mode
[ ] DBZ Mode
[ ] Pokemon Mode
[ ] Moonlight Mode
[ ] Harvest Moon Mode
[ ] GTA Mode
[ ] LOTR Mode
[ ] Star Wars Mode
[ ] .....

Lets just hope they polish that "Radiant Story" system really well, and leave those other games to themselves...

One thing I can say about hardcoe mode is that they should match the game time to real time. So if you are playing at 9pm real time, your character is doing stuff 9pm in game. No fast travel would be allowed either. But yea, i agree that current hardcoe modes are not all that hardcoe.
