Tamriel and Technology

Post » Thu May 19, 2011 3:19 am

Why do people seem to push away the development of technology in Elder Scrolls games? I not saying we should have guns and make it into a medieval Fallout (without the Fallout) but just the development of technology itself (inventions that do jobs magic couldn't achieve) in our human history did we have a stand still in the development of technology? No, I'm saying they should introduce all this tech all at once but gradually over the next couple of games, seems like a reasonable argument what do you think?

Actually in real life we had the dark ages following the fall of the Roman empire. Our technological development came to a complete stop that lasted more than 800 years. I imagine Tamriel is in a similar dark age, and you can't forget the looming dragon threat.

But do you agree that Bethesda should introduce new technology over the next few games?

Who needs technology when you can shoot fire from your fingertips and make yourself invisble.

Its just plain STUPID.
Its not a FPS, it will never have guns and cars. In the LORE of the game it suggests that such things are even heretical (Look up "Dwemer").

So many people wishing this game was something it isn't.

Everybody look, if the rest of the Elder Scrolls games were just set in a 'dark age' the setting of the series would get quite old wouldn't it ?

Don't get me wrong though, I'm not totally against technology in TES. I think the line becomes somewhat blurry when discussing technology in Tamriel, because it's difficult not to end up talking about dwemer inventions.

Don't think so, as it is the main draw of the setting in the first place.

*EPICFACEPALM*

This is what TES is!!!
It won't get old, if they changed it, it wouldn't be TES!

It's never been set in a "Dark age". Its always had a medieval setting, always will. Skyrim has been suggested to have a "dark age" setting in a correlation between real world historical events, and the events taking place in Tamerial at present.

Its lasted what, twenty years, in it current guise. I think its quiet safe.

Besides, I was never saying that Bethesda should introduce cars or guns, I was just saying that they should bring in new weapons into the lore like catapults or something and to people who think I want to introduce cars or guns ....*ahem*....TECHNOLOGY DOES NOT MEAN MODERN CRAP LIKE COMPUTERS OR CARS OR GUNS WHICH I SPECIFICALLY STATED, IF YOU WANT FIND OUT WHAT IT MEANS FIND DICTIONARY!

Who's to say future TES games will even be set in a later period? They could be set even earlier than previous TES games. This is a fantasy game at the end of the day. In fantasy, thousands of years can pass and people are still using swords, bows and magic - why? Because that's what makes it fantasy. If you're going to try and imitate human progression over time, then you may as well take anything 'fantasy' out of the game. Take out the Elves, take out the magic, take out anything that isn't human or earth-like.

Fable made the stupid mistake of trying to simulate technological advancement and look how that turned out. Awful.

I'm not trying to turn it into a Fable catastrophe, I'm trying to say that Bethesda should introduce new inventions that would fit into the Elder Scrolls games and setting (NOT GUNS)

I think that's the ultimate fear for the future of TES. I have faith in Bethesda. They won't let us down! ;)

Technichally, I think with magic playing a part in all true technological development, humans would advance MUCH MUCH faster into almost modern era.

This is not our universe, it has no comparison whatsoever. Just because we progress, doesn't mean the TES universe should. The setting it has at the moment is a huge draw to just about every single one of the TES fans. There is no reason to progress technology wise at all.

This.

Also there is no way you can compare the two. The major factor is that MAGIC exists in TES and not in our world, therefore normal parameters for 'technological evolution' would not be the same e.g. the invention of electricity for light, one spell and a http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Welkynd_Stone stone and you have your answer. There is no incentive to try.

Well, I don't see much problem if at some point in the future games they will introduce a http://www.google.com/search?tbm=isch&hl=en&source=hp&biw=1440&bih=764&q=trebuchet&gbv=2&aq=f&aqi=g10&aql=&oq= or medieval http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&biw=1440&bih=764&gbv=2&tbm=isch&sa=1&q=medieval+battering+ram&aq=f&aqi=g2g-m1&aql=&oq=, if that is what you meant. (Or maybe an Imperial http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&gbv=2&tbm=isch&q=roman+ballista&revid=374035424&sa=X&ei=c33nTbTyNoWWvAOMrojoDQ&ved=0CDgQ1QIoAA&biw=1440&bih=764 in Skyrim to shoot down 'dem big geckos with wings).

They do things by magic, not technology and they are by no means in a middle age.
The people of Tamriel are quite advanced. How about creating and maintaining a pocket dimension in the outer realms, the Battlespire? This is an artificial pocket of existence, fueled by magicka.
Now, we have travelled to the moon, but creating an entire pocket dimension to house a battlemage college, I call that advanced.
