So Target Australia has banned Grand Theft Auto V from sale.

Sadly there's politicians here in the states who would like nothing better than to do this exact same thing. And get rid of a good many other things that should be perfectly legal too.

Never assume it can't happen here is the important thing to remember.

And didn't they take offense with the "Fat Man" too? It it being named after one of the nuclear bombs that were dropped in Japan in WW2, i can see the point.

that makes sense though, its a shameful terrible part in their countries History..

just like ine Germany you can be arrested for mentioning the Nazi's (and most games with Nazi's in them are heavily restricted)

it makes sense in those cases, but banning GTAV for "Violence towards women"? yeah, doesn't make much sense

They are both owned here by WESfarmers, since most people overseas will not know who they are, this wouldnt come as a surprise, if they think they'll lose a cent from bad publicity they'll drop it like a hot rock, the rest of the explanation is covered under, the terms and conditions and rules of use for this forum, i dont have the paragraphs to quote, nor any amendments.

That would explain why only the chains in Australia are doing this.

It was banned for 'sixual violence' not just 'violence', there is a huge difference. If it were a game with sixual violence against men then that should be a reason to be banned too.

This is why it was banned and I completely agree with the ban, some things just go too far, from the petition....

I won't be watching or replying to this thread, I just wanted to set it straight as to exactly why it was banned, as people seem to gloss over the facts or twist them to make it seem like the ban was unreasonable.

The ban is unreasonable due to the fact that they are continuing to sell other products that are just as, if not more mature than GTA.

Plenty of movies and books do the same, should they be banned as well?

That's because the petition blatantly lied and states it ENCOURAGES 'forced six', violence against women and so on, despite the fact you don't get told to sixually assault a single woman to finish the game at all.

Not sure where you're talking about, but most places in the U.S are extremely safe.

The town where I live hasn't had a violent crime in like 10 years.

Anyways. This ban is stupid.

They think its promoting violence against women? Sure, you can kill women. But never has it made you do that, instead it's something that the player can choose to do.

Seriously this is such a non event, its just great publicity for Target and K-Mart during Christmas time as they look like good corporate citizens, Big W, EB Games/Games Stop or any other specialty stores arent even bothering with this, none of them will unless the Australian Censorship board suddenly chances a decision its already made and its not likely since it already been gone over and over.

My friend and I went to the Target here (West coast) when they opened just to see. It was dead. We passed I thing it was like 5 people in the store. I've seen news stories it's not doing well here at all. I wouldn't be surprised if it closes in the not too distant future.

As to the topic at hand, I'm not a fan of censorship or nanny states. It's the parents job to monitor what their kids are playing, not a companies/states. (Parents need to decide whether it's appropriate or not.)

My friends kids have been playing violent games (Fallout's/etc) for a couple years now and they are well adjusted, great kids. They "get it". They know there is a difference between video game violence and real violence. I think we coddle our kids too much. Kids aren't as dumb as some advlts seem to think they are.

To be quite honest, I don't really care one way or another if chain stores want to ban games like GTA V. I don't play 'em, so meh, more power to the chain companies.

Do you want to have your kids to:

1. Play with spider-man or Barbie?

2. Play with peppa Pig?

3. [censored] [censored]es and get money, break traffic rules and curb stomp padestrians?

What a nice variation, a gift to fit any kids preference.

I'm fairly certain I want my (hypothetical) kids to not play GTA under any circumstances. It's a violent game that caters to crime. They can play RPGs and any other video games all they want, but not games like GTA. I condone what this chain store has done. Sometimes it has to do the thinking if the parents won't. I mean, how many parents buy the games without bothering to check the ratings? Then are surprised when little Billy or Sue is quoting profanity they heard from? How many game sellers must groan when they have to explain to one more idiot parent the patently obvious of reading the game label and not buying the game if the kid's not old enough?

That seems like kind of a double standard, considering the types of things you can do in a game like Fallout 3 or New Vegas. Or even Skyrim.
