So Target Australia has banned Grand Theft Auto V from sale.

Post » Fri Dec 05, 2014 1:20 pm

That's exactly what not to do. Parents need to take the initiative, not be lazy and have corporations and/or governments handle it. It's good that you made the decision to forbid any of your future children from playing the game. it's bad that you condone lazy parenting by allowing companies to take the initiative. Since Target also sells uncensored gangsta rap CD's, why not ban those too?

Granted I was being satirical on that last bit, it still must be frustrating for the game sellers. It's not exactly high tech rocket science to look at the label and take the initiative to not buy it for the kids? But sadly the parents would get all huffy if people tell them how to be parents because they know better.

THEN USE COMMON SENSE AND READ THE GODDAMNED LABEL ON THE BOX!!!

True, but Fallout and TES, and many of the other RPGs out there allow you to be a heroic messiah figure, a card-carrying mass murderer, or something in between.

That and they're typically not set in our world, as in as close to our modern-day world as we know it. Fallout is set in a world based off of 1950s America's understanding of how World War III would've gone down, complete with parodies and shout outs to things that were popular at the time. TES, of course, is set in a fantasy world where cats, lizards, orcs, and elves can coexist side-by-side with the humans. Oh, and there's magic, flying dragons, portals to demonic worlds and all that stuff.

Games like GTA and Saints Row? Is set in what's basically our world, though fabricated. That said, even the Fallout series suffered through some censorship as noted above.

Yes, but regardless even if you are a messiah figure in Fallout 3, you still have to see and do alot of sick [censored] in order to get through to the main quest. Raider 'dressings'? Super-mutant campsites? Implied torture and mutilation? Not to mention you can chop people's limbs and heads off. Compared to that GTA seems rather tame by at least some standards. Robbing a bank seems less of a crime compared to something like child enslavement.

Granted I'm not saying GTA is for kids or anything, but neither is Fallout 3. One would imagine if you can play Fallout 3 you should be mature enough to play GTA as well.

It wasnt banned, can we jump to conclusions or are facts to difficult to look up, it like everything thats run through the censorship board has to be stopped and assessed before its released, the 18+ rating system is only new 1 January 2013, Witcher 2 was released in May 17, 2011 for PC at MA 15+ before the 18+ because of the six scenes and changes were requested and it was released and 17 April 2012 for XBOX. Banned means you cannot purchase it unless you ship it in through other means, depending on the level of the ban, since i had it on its release date shows it wasnt banned, it was held over for assessment like any other games, movies, books and tv shows and whatever else.

Its released in March 2015, there are movie trailers shown in cinemas that are to be released in weeks that have no classification, its pretty common, if anythings done they might remove something they dont like but it'll still be sitting on my desk, and it'lll be in my collection.

I know of nowhere in Australia that would be significantly dangerous for an average middle class individual to venture. Sure, there are places you wouldn't go for a walk at night, but the main danger is addicts (and we're talking cities with millions of people). Can you honestly say the same about the USA?

Crimes rates are always higher where there are larger populations. Generally, everything is better or worse with high populations. Higher populations = greater workforce which leads to more jobs available, which leads to better educational facilities. Of course, as everything proportional grows so does crime rates. Let's say that in a town of 100 only one person commits a crime. That is a 1% rate. In a city of 2,000,000 where 20,000 people commit crimes that is still just 1%.

Can we please get back on track?

And that's why I like you.

Yes, let's stop pissing on each other's nations and get back to the topic of GTA V being banned for reasons some say are pathetic.

mkay, well let me throw in another 2 cents..

the question is, now that a group of people have successfully got it off the sehlves, How far will this go into other games?

whats Next? TES or Fallout? you can be Violent towards women in those games.. the Newer CoDs you can play a female Character, guess take CoD off the Shelves because god forbid a woman gets harmed, and since its so Similar to CoD mark Battlefield off the list.. better get Mass Effect banned as well, you gain experience and money for Punching female reporters in the face! ohh, might as well knock WoW off the List, you can go kill female players in it!

seriously, I thought it was a Stupid thing when that group of Women here in Canada were trying to get earlier GTA titles (VC and SA) banned and said on the Radio "this is just the beginning, games are Corrupting our youth this Very Minute! we want Any games that Contain Violence of Any Kind only purchasable in advlt Stores"..
However, no body here In Canada took those Women seriously.. as such, I find it weird that Australia (our Brothers in the Commonwealth), would give into such people so easily, when Canadians would literally Laugh in their face.

True, but you're not railroaded into enslaving the child.

I will agree that Fallout 3 certainly brims with mature, controversial content, and judging by TES IV's re-rating, the mutilated corpses alone were probably sufficient to give FO3 an M rating. Now, that said, that sort of stuff seems to be a lot less controversial.

Exactly, Crimson. What makes TES and Fallout different is that you're not forced by the game to do something unspeakable. You have to decide to join the Dark Brotherhood or help a bunch of slavers round up some wanted people for their den. The game doesn't grab you by the shoulder and say, "ENSLAVE THAT PERSON! GOOD, YOU LIKED THAT? THEN YOU svck BECAUSE SLAVERY IS IMMORAL, SICK AND TWISTED!! GOD, I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU DID THAT EVEN THOUGH I FORCED YOU TO DO EXACTLY THAT!!!"

TES and Fallout says, "OK, here's the world. Do whatever you like and, oh my God, WHY are you joining the Dark Brotherhood/helping those slavers!? Ugh, OK, fine. Whatever, but that will earn you infamy/subtract from your karma!"

@ funnybunny- I've...got a confession to make. I too have that weird sort of double-standard about violence in video games. I can beat the utter crap out of male NPCs all I want, but I cringe when I see female NPCs get slapped or shoved around and I NEVER hurt a female NPC, even when I'm playing an evil character. It's...yeah, it's weird.

a game is only as Violent as the person who plays it wants it to be..

example: my Niece, she was about 12 and I was looking after her while her Parents were out of Town.. I went to cook her some Supper, I come back and she was on one of my Consoles playing GTA.. she was not shooting or killing People, just driving her Car around, obeying Traffic Laws, grabbing something to eat at the Burger Store, taking the Train from the house to the Clothing Store, and than went powerboating..

so your "But Fallout Doesn't Force you to do that Stuff" applies to about any open-world game really, Including GTA.. just Like my Niece, who when playing it just did everyday stuff, its not like a Giant "you lose" button showed up with the way she was playing..

thus is the Joy of Open World games.. you are not forced to do all the Bloody Evil stuff, you can literally just live an Everyday life within the world..
