It usually takes at least 5 successful taunts before they will attack you.

Try talking bad about his mother.

And yeah a sucess just adds to your speachcraft and lowers disposition. Several sucessful taunts are needed to make them attack you.

It's pretty aggravating at lower levels of speechcraft. But once you get higher, you'll successfully taunt more often. It takes a good while to get 5 good taunts in a row with a low skill.

If your going to get someone to attack you, steal a low value object that belongs to them. When you get in a fight, beat him down and only pay the stolen object value to the guards

And keep in mind that some NPC's cant be taunted into combat. Either because of inherit fight values, or lack of dialogue options triggering it (but mainly fight value).

Success in taunt is not "success". :)

You need to taunt until their personality drops below 10, then bring it back up with bribes of gold. Return to taunt/bribe until you get the red goodbye, let the NPC get the first strike in otherwise you could be accused of starting the fight and arrested.

Remember, after you have killed them you can get the gold you bribed them with back from their corpse.

I've had a taunted adversary attack after 3 non-consecutive successes, although 4 or 5 are more often needed. I generally raise disposition to around 60-70 by Admiring, then Taunt down to 50. Any lower and the odds of successfully Taunting OR Admiring seem to decrease noticably.

Of course, you can also use a bottle of Telvanni Bug Musk to boost disposition temporarily, but that only works once. An Imperial character generally has a much easier job getting what they want through Speechcraft.
