I am wondering what scale of turn-base-strategy games are out there, and recommendations for whichever system. Mostly I have been exposed to Xcom games which I am a big fan of, but I have not really been exposed to much outside those.

Bring you experience, I will grade it after class.

Turned based games?

Look no further than the Total War series.

:P

I feel like a damn advertiser for them.

Note: Total war has real-time battles, but a turn-based campaign map.

@OP, try The Sid Meier's Civilization games.

Good turnbased strategy games:

Steel Panthers 1, 2, 3
Panzer General 1, 2
Heroes of Might and Magic 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
Civilization 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
Jagged Alliance 1, 2
Temple of Elemental Evil (More of an RPG than strategy, but combat is pretty dominant)

In my eyes, the full real time battles are but a perk. You spend 90% of your time on the campaign map anyways, building your empire.

Jagged Alliance 2, if you want something slightly similar to X-COM.
I'll just go for my favourites - this genre once was a pest, now it's rare to see new stuff.

Broad scale:
Civilization (I'd recommend IV, for mod diversity.)
Galactic Civilizations II
Master of Orion II
Master of Magic
Elemental

Smaller scale:
Battle Isle
Battle for Wesnoth (FREEBIE!)
Panzer General

Slight RPG factor:
Disciples
Heroes of Might and Magic
King's Bounty
Age of Wonders

On the consoles, you'll mostly find strategy RPGs in that playstyle. Basically, you can look at anything from Nippon Ichi - they vary in silliness and Japan-esity (new word!). Also recommended: Jeanne D'Arc, Final Fantasy Tactics (vastly improved on the PSP) and Tactics Ogre.
Other than those, you'll likely hear about Advance Wars, sooner or later.

Not for people like me who play TBS in the first place because RTS is too fast paced (plus I svck at it). I bought King Arthur because it looked like an interesting game, and I was aware that it had the real time segments.... but I wasn't aware how much I would svck at them and therefore never progressed in the game.

Silent Storm is probably my favorite all time turn based game.

How is elemental now that it's been patched?

Sweet, I really appreciate the lists.

For the rest that pop up, if you could give just a word or two about the game type.
city-scape
battlefield
grid battles
world domination
first person v third person if applicable.

I've always been Civ and Risk curious, playing both on table top beforehand. Probably give Heroes M&M a try also.

Silent Storm is a tactical turn based strategy where you control a squad of soldiers. So it's in Battlefields / under ground bunkers.

Great. Even greater with the more recent patches. Has finally reached the level of Master-of-Magic-ness that Galactic Civilizations II had in Master-of-Orion-ness.

Doesn't crash for me after a few hours any longer, and runs more fluidly, too.
Probably give Heroes M&M a try also.

You really should. HoMM3 is the best of the series, hands down. You can get the complete package with all addons (and all the other 'slight RPG' games I mentioned, plus Master of Orion and Master of Magic) at Good Old Games, for easy access and playability in the future. ^_^

http://freeciv.wikia.com is another free one, in the same vein as the Civilisation series (the name isn't misleading :P).

Okay, I know X-COM has overworld strategy to it, but isn't the meat of the gameplay tactical? And the overworld strategy isn't even TB.

That said, UnDecaf has a good list.

Edit: I'm nit-picking, though. Maybe check out Final Fantasy Tactics, Tactics Ogre, and other JRPG-style tactical combat games. The tactics are actually deep. Avoid the regular JRPGs, though-- nothing tactical about them.

I got Galactic Civilisations 2 the other day. It's great fun, I'm playing a map to learn how to play, but it's not all that different in essentials from any other 4X game.

I'm currently playing as the humans, and my mighty Imperator class cruisers have destroyed the Drengin Empire Starfleet with our Stinger torpedoes, for which they have no defence. They agreed to peace when we took their homeworld and two colonies from them. I didn't want to invade so early with limited ships, but the cost was worth it to stop them from ascending with the crystals, and they mostly only had small defender-type craft, no match for my warships, which, when built, convinced the other races to start sending me money.

I notice they seem to have stolen their default ship designs from Babylon 5 and Star Trek.

You are right about Xcom, but in general I am looking for games that are not so input sensitive.

Really deep tactics are a plus, but for me it is nice to be able to play a game or single play through over the course of a few months.
Action-RPG-Shooters etc., the high input games burn out after that amount of time.

Masters of Orion I and II. Call 2 Power 2 but modded with the Apolyton Pack, is a good game as well.

Alpha Centarui is another good one as well, and Civ Revolution is good as well on the 360, not sure how it's like on the PS3. People who love Civ, most will say Civ Rev is no good, but you can finish a game in 6-8 hours and not days or weeks and not even finish.

I own it, and I don't enjoy discovering all my opponents and mapping the whole world in less than an hour.

Well, I think it's because it's generally viewed as more RPG, less tactical than games like Jagged Alliance 2 and Silent Storm, which have similar gameplay.

And OP, maybe I could help more if you explain what you mean by low input and high input? Do you mean you want more overworld strategy like Civ?
