TDW's Concepts for Skyrim fo TES 3

Post » Mon Mar 29, 2010 7:22 pm

This small thread shall be for discussion of my concepts for Skyrim for TES 3 "home of the nords" WIP. As I'm working rather fast concerning my 3D-models, I can't wait for replies on the team's homepage only or on skype and so I will keep this thread here going for my personal stuff. All models should be considered as pure concepts on which the team hasn't yet agreed!!! But nonetheless I need much feedback to come up with a good product in the end. So plz feel free to give constructive criticism and tips!!! ;)

Here is what I'm working on at the momemt, a new troll. What you guys think? :)

I think it looks fantastic. I'd like to see it use the butt scratching animation that ogres use in Oblivion :)

Excellent!
The one gripe i have about the head is that the tusks kind of just pop up, I imagine you can fix this by texturing the lowest part of the tusks to blend better with the head.

Looking forward to this =)

It looks to be a pretty high quality model, and I like the fur texture, but my suggestion would be to reduce the tongue somewhat, with that great big thing hanging out of its mouth it looks somewhat comical. Perhaps droop the ears a little bit, too? They look a little bit too rigid to me.

I'll agree with Mireneye and Cathartis.

I like the slow dimwitted look, but the tongue takes it to the comical level (plus it'd be nice to be able to close the mouth without messing with tongue anims).
Drag the vertices on the lip so the teeth fit into the mouth properly, it wont kill you. :P

I think the colour scheme and gorilla like textures are excellent. I'm glad there are no human teeth or spikes, and the body structure looks superb. Great job so far! :goodjob:
Am I animating the this? I'm ok either way, I'd just like to know if I am or not, so I can sketch down some ideas while I'm waiting for the model.

@john.moonsugar: Yeah, I had something like that in mind, maybe I can take over some animations from Al Bundy!!! :P

@Cathartis: I will tweak the head a bit, but I'll have to take care of the UVs, cause texture is already half done!!! :)

@Mireneye:

Thx, added some small gum area at the bottom of the teeth to have a better fading.

@Dirnae:

The comical look was intended, I thought of the troll as a giant beast with a rather childish mind and behaviour. Not mean by nature, but easily to be provoked, manipulated or tricked out. The tongue will be animated and most times it will be inside the mouth. Just wanted to showcase it.

We can share the work, if you like. I'm really keen on animating it myself, but I'm very limited due to the lack of power of my old PC!!! :(

Nah, I'd rather work on it myself or not at all. It's a mix of technical issues and preference.
There are a couple of people who could help you if needed though.

Looks great, but I wouldn't call it a troll ingame. In TES the trolls have three eyes like in Oblivion and on the bones found in Morrowind. I also agree the tongue is kind of huge; perhaps have it not always be so protruding, make it part of an idle animation or something.

If you're going to replace any animations I make later on, then I'd rather you do them yourself now, and replace them yourself later on, I don't like wasting my time.
This isn't meant as rude, it's just I'm not going to spend time making 'stand-in' animations.

It sounds like you really want to animate this, so go ahead, I'm sure it'll be fine, and if anything does go wrong I'm sure someone like Muspila or Anteres would help you out if you asked.

GuitarJoe: You're right, I'm trying to think of a decent name now, have you got any ideas? I guess an old Norse, or some sort of Germanic name would be preferable, I'll look into it later.

Hey, that was just a little mockery!!! :P I can't animate the troll fully by myself, cause after a certain amount of animation my PC just shuts down and I cant even move the action markers in Blender anymore. I know how to animate and I'd really love to give life to my own creatures and it svcks a lot to me that I can't due to too old equipement. :(

Besides, I will create so many creatures, that I couldn't get them all animated myself at all anyway. I still have to do the ogre, a real sabertooth and what else comes next...

Let's have a chat on skype by time!!! :foodndrink:

Oh ... model is simply amazing. But the protruding tongue in the screenshots. I think that your troll too far with tranquilizers. Otherwise, really gorgeous beast!

Looking at http://img190.imageshack.us/img190/499/troll1v.jpg it feels like it would topple over, it just looks unstable and feels like it'd pitch face first onto the ground. Could its posture be made more upright? So its centre of gravity is more over its feet. Possibly a stubby tail could be added to balance out the rest of its body. Or maybe make the arms longer so its more of a knuckle-walker, like a gorilla?

Not sure, its your model but just from those static pics it looks a unstable. Maybe it'd look different moving

Anyway, with the texture face looks epic :goodjob:

The pivot point, which is the center of the model is placed on a vertical line above the feet, so balance should be quite ok.If necessary, the pose can be altered easily, once the model has been rigged. It's not that easy to get it look right, if you do it freehand from your imagination. I'll search the internet for some references next time. ;)

I too was reminded of Ludo. I like the model, and don't mind the tongue protruding from its mouth.

I didn't know that Ludo-creature, what movie was it from again?

The tongue will possibly have various colors, which will have different signals ingame, like different colors for male and female, agressive or peaceful and so on. I chose blue, cause I didn't want to have that standard red as always.

Here is an update on the ogre. lestat and I agreed on more realistic textures with less painterly look. I love painting, but as almost all things in Skyrim have fotorealsitic textures, I think crreatures with realistic textures will blend in a lot better.

Ludo is one of the creatures in Jim Henson's The Labyrinth.
