Team Fortress 2 help

Post » Tue Feb 01, 2011 11:03 am

So I recently picked up the Orange Box and played a little TF2 last night for the first time. Anyone here play it still? If so, care to give me some tips on how to play it effectively as I can only seem to kill others if I choose Heavy Weapons Guy

BTW absolutely love the characters. Quality!

Simple (like, reeeally simple) starter guide:

Scout: Never stay still, have good aim, get close and shoot them close-up. Aim for the body.
Soldier: Aim at the ground/walls/floors and hit them with splash damage. Always get higher ground. Learn to rocket jump.
Pyro: Learn how to airblast. Never rush straight forward flaming (W+M1). Use Axtinguisher very often as soon as you unlock it.
Demoman: Set traps. Aim along the ground with your grenades if you're trying to hit something specific. Avoid close-range (unless it's melee-range close).
Engineer: I'm afraid I never play him.
Spy: Make sure to vary what you disguise as. Have an exit plan. Never run out the front entrance disguised.
Sniper: Point and click, really. Be vary of Spies, your melee weapon is generally better against them than your SMG.
Medic: Never stay is LoS for enemies, hide while you heal. Always heal someone for Ubercharge. Uber Heavy or Soldier in general, Demo works for clearing Engi nests.

Look at Youtube for better guides, there are good ones for most classes =). Otherwise you could specify which classes interest you, IIRC, there are quite a few TF2 players here.

What system you playing on?

I was really good on 360. I'm average at the PC version.

I don't still play it, but I used to play regularly. I was on console though, just so you know. Some pointers:

- It's Team Fortress 2. Teamwork is everything. Make sure you cooperate. No "lone-wolf" or "personal-vendetta" operations.
- Take one or two classes and make them your specialty.
- Own a mic, and talk with your teammates. Kick anyone who doesn't have a mic.

I have class specific tips too, but that's going to make for a really long list. You can either PM me for the whole thing, or you can simply tell me the classes you favor the most so I can post it here. I personally was best at Spy and Engineer. TF2 can be a really fun game if you have a proper team going. Remember to add friends while playing, there's even an achievement for that. ;)

Heavy is a good class to start with, just have to watch your back for incoming spies. Medic can be another good pick while starting out, everyone likes a player who keeps them more alive. Pyros are also pretty easy to play: just run after enemy players and burn them all - this is known as the W + M1 approach to gameplay; just use whatever seems to work. :D

Stay with your team, don't lone wolf too much, and keep your cool - it's a pretty easy game to get into. ;)

PC. Did so because I've grown to like playing shooters with my keyboard and also Half Life is much better on PC.

Why? A mic really isn't all that necessary. Maybe it's because I just play arena, but I have never needed a mic.

Well I might have been a bit extreme there. :P

Basically because as we all know, the 360 crowd isn't exactly the most refined group. A lot of people in it aren't team players and just mess around, ruining things for their own team. A person with a mic can provide feedback, and can is also more involved, enforcing the team spirit.

I mic just makes it easier to communicate and get involved in all sorts of vocal shenanigans. If you can type fast, it works just as well, though.

You want to find a good balanced set of servers to consistently play on. Stay away from Lotus servers, sides are always stacked to hell. I have a preference to Alpha Omega servers.

Ah yes, I was beginning to wonder whether I was playing on unbalanced servers, so pwnage was imminent.

Also, how do set up your own game and get players to join? I don't want to constantly join other servers.

I know there's an option for it, but that option never seems to allow players to connect. Your best bet is to join a clan, or at least find a server you wouldn't mind being a regular on.

My golden rule: Everyone is a spy until proven otherwise.

I'll learnt on PC by be consistently being pwn'd. I learnt what killed my the quickest as which class.

He's lying. Nobody plays Spy. Naturally.

Was there ever any doubt?

Nope, no spies here. *shifty eyes* Especially not me. Feel free to leave your back open, not like I can backstab you or anything. Totally on your side :P.

I never got on mic. There were far too many girls pulling the "I am sooo totally gamer grrrrrrl" and I didn't want to be associated with that. Plus, it was like the first few years on the Forums.

I always played Scout to improve him, but I svcked so badly because everyone else was so good and my computer got me 15fps in the game, so I was unfiguratively dead before I knew it.

Only thing that could get me on mic would be a Dalek voice changer.

DESTROY DESTROY?

EXTERMINATE.

Anyway, I think a tip for the the general game is to spy-check anybody you see running in the opposite direction (Towards your base) with either a flame thrower or a normal gun. No Team damage means no worrying about upsetting anybody. If anything they'd be glad you're doing it.

Engi's are mostly good for point-defense, though you can set up "Mobile defense" strategy by setting up wherever the heaviest fighting is. Also, anybody running towards your turret is probably a spy, dispensers are useful to teammates, so spy-check to be sure.

Heavies are heavies. Shoot stuff. A lot. Good for defense and pumping lots of bullets where needed.

Demomen are good at area denial and laying traps. They are also good at rooting out campers with the ability to bounce grenades around corners.

Soldiers can be good at area denial, but not as easily as the demoman. Best to shoot at people's feet, but then if they jump in time they can avoid a lot of the damage plus go flying.

Pyros are really good at spy checking. One short blast is all that's needed. They can also be useful for sweet, sweet ironic deaths. Use your blastback on a crit rocket and watch the blood shower.

Medics are usually found with Heavies. A Heavy+Medic combo act as the game's tank, even more so then the normal heavy. Ubercharges are pretty much used to run into a heavily defended area and kill as much stuff as possible before your charge wears off.

Scouts are good for capturing stuff, as you may expect, scouting. They capture points at twice the rate and, if played correctly, can (literally) run circles around the enemy, shooting them many times before then can get a hit.

Spies are somewhat difficult to do well. Make sure never to run at someone like you're going to kill them, because they will probably notice. Use the cloak to get into the enemy base, then set up a disguise and wreak havoc. They are good at sabotage and killing campers, causing confusion and panic in the enemy lines, destroying Engineer buildings and killing anybody giving your team problems.

Snipers are good for giving the other team problems. Sit back (Preferably against a wall) and shoot anything of the other color that moves. Hopefully in the head.

And most important:
Concerning the Pyro, for the sake of every teammate you'll ever have, USE AIRBLAST TO PUT BURNING FRIENDS OUT.

The universe will be a better place if you do.

Just some quick tips for heavy since you seem to like him.

-Always jump around corners and spin up your minigun at the same time. You don't lose speed for spinning in the air.
-Run when necessary. Just because you have one of the best short range damage dealers and the highest health does not make you invincible. Stop shooting and go eat your sandvich, find a health pack, or a medic.
-If you have a medic, keep an eye on his health and help him out with your own sandvich(right click to toss it)
-If you have a really good medic, you might want to switch to shotgun now and then. No movement penalties and a decent short range damage dealer
-I would say get the fists of steel but they've been nerfed a bit now. GRUs can be handy for running, but you don't really wanna go melee with a heavy, so it's not too important
-Look behind you, shoot the person staring at where your back was.
-Wear the Toque. Probably the most important advice.

Can also use an uber on Heavy if he looks good enough and his able to shoot straight and is getting some good kills. I usually open the first uber of the day with a heavy or a demo man depending on sentry density. Be twitchy, and always alert as a medic, if you think you can dodge good run around in the enemies field of fire to distract fire from your healer. That's an advanced tactic though, so don't try it unless you think you can pull it off. Generally speaking I know a lot of people I uber yell medic just before they go out of the gate signaling they want the uber. Then again that was on a good server, so use your better judgement. They might just be spamming. Another advanced trick you can try is healing 2-3 people with your uber to really shock and awe the enemy team by thinking three ubers just came out of the gate. Always look behind you because a spy can back stab you. Default medic equipment is THE best in the widest range of situations, so don't get discouraged at first. I use kritz on defense if I KNOW I have an amazing heavy, but if we're getting our ass kicked hard I'll go back to ubers

Does anybody have a recommendation for good servers? I had a server that I always played on, but sadly it no longer exists, so I'm out on the street, as it were.

You can replace with the amputator for no negative side effects, though you really shouldn't be relying on the taunt heal.
