Is it technically possible to carry on the main quest line?

Post » Thu Apr 01, 2010 12:07 pm

I realize it would be incredibly complicated considering all the possible endings, but the main quest ends too soon, just when it gets interesting, and I would love the idea of an epilogue of some sort.
And also the best character I've ever built is trapped in the end-game at hoover dam, with no other early save files, and I would love to use him again for Dead Money and other future add ons...

So yeah it's been months now, and I guess there's no information yet about this possibility.. But perhaps the long wait could mean they are attempting something big? Perhaps an epilogue?

They have stated that they will not create a Broken Steel'esque DLC.
The epilogue is the ending sliders.
And if your character is stuck then (s)he's stuck.

I m pretty sure it s been stated they r not going to do that. I d be all for them thowing out 57 endings only keeping the real one. ( House or NCR but ncr more than likely) Then going into AZ and sweeping weak scrub fake Ceaser s Legion so we never have to see them again.

I m talking riot shotty with slugs pip boy light on, village to villige, house to house, mud hut to mud, killing every thing that moves. Cleansing the earth of that unworthy of a fallout main enemy. Leaving no pebble unturned to be 100% certain those scrubs will never be in a Fallout again.

Nice thought, but it not going to happen. Don t worry someone might decide for us what really happened in nv someday. We ll all be like 50 on this site arguing about what happened I can see it now.

Not going to happen. The amount of content they'd need to cater to every choice would be the size of a whole new game, only it'd last as long as a DLC per playthrough.

does it matter? just do what i did after i beat fallout, make a new save kill Ceaser (ends his quest line), kill Mr. House (ends his quest line), Dont go to the NCR embassy (doesnt even start their quest line), Do all of Yes Man's quest up until he is in the computer then ignore it (this way you get xp) and then do whatever the hell you want? its pretty simple actually :whistling: Most Rpgs dont have a long MAIN quest line anyway thats why theirs 150 or so locations on the map and a holy bible size list of side quest.

but why would they put all that time and energy into creating the weapons and armor that are placed just there and getting the enclave involved and everything, basically to me it just shows that they all [censored] up o the end game product. they dont know what to do. and theyre holding off on dlc's until they figure it out. i got dead money in like november and its april now so this is rediculous. i never waited this long for FO3 downloads. im really about to throw this game out the window

No their won't be a Broken Steel type DLC or any type of DLC that extends the game after the Battle At Hoover Dam. It won't happen.

Mhmm yeah thanks I think the previous comments got the point across already. Didn't need another emotionless "Nope. Not happening."

I'm disappointed that they're not doing a Broken Steel type thing now. The hints that they put out about the upcoming DLC make them sound way epic-er than the end of New Vegas. The battle at Hoover Dam got nothin' on The Divide.

I wish there was a way to retrieve my character that's stuck in the end-game, I spent so many hours building him perfectly and I wont be able to use him for these awesome sounding future DLC's, what with the new level caps and such. I hope they somehow update the game to bring our characters back to before the Hoover Dam battle.... It's possible right?

One thing that Obsidian got wrong here was thinking all players would read that popup and take it seriously by making a hard save on their own. Seems a good number of players just clicked past that popup without reading it. The game taking the initiative of making it's own hard save at this point might have prevented some grief...and entertainment for us.

If I read Obsidian's initial comment correctly, the way I read it was that they were going to cause the game to create a seperate save game once you reached the point of no return, but I'm assuming they hit a barrier they couldn't get round in the time they had which prevented them from doing that. Whether it was due to lack of time, engine constraints or something else is anyone's guess.

There's an old adage (saying) where I live which states that "Good things come to those who wait", which all too many people don't know about or have forgotten these days.

Y'know, the more I think about it, the more I wonder if they might make a DLC that continues after the MQ, but yet has a definite ending as well and doesn't touch on any part of the ending from the MQ. I mean, something as epic sounding as a great battle at The Divide between The Courier and Ulysses, for all intents and purposes, should be the end of the story for your character, not something that gets wrapped up before you run off to Hoover Dam.

What would stop them from doing something like that anyway? It wouldn't technically let you free play after the MQ, like Broken Steel did, so it wouldn't contradict their "no Broken Steel" stance. But it would give everyone who ignored/missed the "no going back" moment a chance to take advantage of at least one DLC.

DLC is additions to the game... because they were not designed to be included as part of the main game they will always feel.... tacked on and somewhat awkward. Mass Effect kind of got around that because the entire game felt like a collection of DLC episodes due to the fragmentation of the stories among planets. That kind of kills world continuity, but when the game takes place across a galaxy the idea of a single, continuous world does not apply. :P

Why does that matter? There doesn't have to be any mention of the results of the MQ in the DLC. In fact, the outcome of the Battle of Hoover Dam, what happens to your follower(s), the effects on the people and places of the Mojave, none of that has to have any effect on the events in The Divide, just like the events in The Divide don't have to change anything about the MQ. In fact, it would give Obsidian a logical way to, say, have The Courier die for whatever reason (sacrifice to stop Ulysses, Ulysses wins, etc) if they so choose. It would take place AFTER the MQ, so The Courier's part in those events would still be valid.

Honestly? I don't really care one way or another. I'd love to be able to play on after the end of the game, but I don't fault the devs at all for wanting a concrete ending, and won't complain one bit about it. I just thought I'd share an interesting potential way of getting around the "multiple ending" issue, still have a definite end to the story, and yet allow us to play past the "official" end of the game. Technically, it's kind of a half-measure, and wouldn't likely satisfy the people clamoring for free play, but it's still a vague, if unlikely possibility.

from what I gather though, the DLCs are just parts they've cut of of the main questline anyway, they are integral parts of the story, so they all tie in together. Like in Caesar's camp, they say "the slaves are talking about the burning man again"... what? Burning who? Ah, but it will make sense once the DLC plugs in. The stuff about courier 6, someone knows you? Ah, but that too will make sense once the DLC plugs in. Veronica talks about Father Elijah. Where did he go? ah, that makes sense when you play Dead Money. etc etc.

I think New Vegas would be better played as a GOTY edition with all the DLCs from the start.

(oh, and for the record, I worked damn hard to make sure Vegas was an independent state, run off the Fiends, worked with the Followers etc. Hope they don't just go with a "NCR won Vegas and pressed on..." in the next one, cos that is soooo obvious and yaaawn)

Why would you want to continue the game? I mean really? What is there to do? Finish a small handfull of quests that you could've just saved before hand and done? I honestly would rather they invest their time in something else anyways...

I've asked the same thing several times. Never recived an answer from the pro-play-after-end crowd.

Well, yes, and being able to do them without having the final battle hanging over you. It can feel a bit silly putting the life-and-death endgame stuff on hold while you run off looking for star bottle caps (although this is an issue for most RPGs).

Then there's visiting every last location on the map, looking for dungeons to dive, beasties to kill, treasure to loot.

And beyond that, there's virtual LARPing, and self-created quests/challenges, and achievement-hunting, that sort of thing. I think the technical term for this sort of stuff is 'dikeing around'.

And it'd be nice to be able to dike around with Lanius' helmet and sword, too.

(To be clear, I don't want a Broken Steel-style DLC for NV, it would be all-but-impossible given the story they decided to tell anyway. Nonetheless, it should only take a smidgen of imagination to realise there are all sorts of reasons people want to keep playing beyond the end credits, and most of them boil down to "I really enjoy this game, am attatched to this character and want to keep playing." It is paying the game a compliment.)

No its not possible and its not going to happen. The Devs said they will not, main reason is there are way to many veriables to account for. They would have to make four new Mojavies to relect the changes of the main endings. Then there are the many changes made to the smaller factions and the companions.

Way to much work, to the point were it is technically not possible.

Why do we need it? So people can run around with the mask they get from the legion guy at the end? So they can finish quests they could have done before the ending? Just load a damn save! The game warns you its coming to the point of no return if you keep going with the main quest. Stop and make a special SAVE.

Then on a minor note. There would be so many canon fights around it "well it did not happen because NV/Broken steel took the endings away, so none of the endings happened!" :banghead:

Right not so sure it is possible there could be a number of endings depending on the faction you used and i am thinking they shouldnt cuz it would alter New Vegas's landscape dramatically
