Technollogy in Tamriel

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 2:30 pm

So I know a thing or two about the history of Tamriel from all the books in the game, but one thing is unclear to me.

What about technollogy in Tamriel? Has technollogy evolved over time? Were people once primitive cavemen and now advanced like the Romans?

Also what about baths and sewage? Do they have any kind of cleanliness?

I do know that locks evolved over time from one book I read, but what about weapons? Did swords and axes and stuff evolve over time?

How do they transport clean water? I've never seen an aquaduct...

And finally where is the farming output? Are there any large scale plantations in Tamriel to feed everybody?

First of all, if you haven't seen something in games it doesn't necessary meen it doesn't exist at all.

If I must make comparison I would make it with High middle ages. Peoples of Tamriel know how to build magnificent towns, roads, bridges, they travel across great seas, they know hot to make siege machines (even primitive guns), they have very advanced smithing techniques... I say were primitive before, but I would also say that mer were a bit less primitive than humans.

Also what about baths and sewage? Do they have any kind of cleanliness?

Great part of games is situated in sewers, so yes they know for sewage and I'm sure they know for baths. If we can make conclusion about hygiene on Tamriel I doubt they spend hours under shower or in tubs, except parts of aristocracy ;). Even our Earthly ancient times were far from being clean.

I do know that locks evolved over time from one book I read, but what about weapons? Did swords and axes and stuff evolve over time?

Logic says yes, look about Dunmeri armor, evolution from basic chitin armor to "Indoril" armor.

How do they transport clean water? I've never seen an aquaduct...

See my first line, most of the cities are near watter, perhaps someone carries it buckets?!

And finally where is the farming output? Are there any large scale plantations in Tamriel to feed everybody?

What about food and ingredient vendors? There quite a bit lore about Dunmeri plantations in south and some lore about farms in Cyrodiil.

What about farming in Vvardenfell? IIRC there is a place named "Arvel Plantation"

In Daggerfall there are quite a few farmsteads in every country, so I'm assuming they have a fairly reasonable farming system.

From what I can tell Tamriel is at the point we'd call "High Middle Ages" with magic thrown in. Some technology went in reverse due to the disappearance of the Dwemer. Crossbows all but disappeared, along with most of their steampunk. The Empire is essentially a "what if?" scenario of 15th century Roman Empire, with the County Lords and Dukes squabbling amongst themselves as the Elder Council and Emperor held the real power, that is, the control of the Imperial Legion. Some parts of the Empire are nearly autonomous, such as Morrowind (due to the machinations of Vivec during the treaties), Summurset Isle (due to what I perceived as a fear of angering the Altmer Mage-Lords) and (arguably) Orsinium, as they are seperate from both High Rock and Hammerfell, but not quite an Imperial Province on their own. What I gathered from the Lore is the Empire leaves well enough alone with the Orcish King, kind of a "the devil you know" situation. I realise I've gone on quite a tangent here, so back to the subject at hand.

Weapons I would imagine evolved over time, the club being the primitive weapon of old, as it's the most brutally simple. Since Ebony (in Morrowind) was portrayed as an EXTREMELY dense metal, I would imagine it was only in recent history (past 500-600 years) Ebony was forged in Tamriel, and through that Daedric, with Daedric possibly existing earlier as relics from the Daedric Prince's servants (Golden Saints and Dremora come to mind). Likely the very first metal forged would have been Iron, followed by Steel after the discovery of the coaling process used in the making of Steel. Silver would be an unknown as it is not known to us if the Ayeleids discovered it in their digging but we know in modern Tamriel Silver is used as an alloy or even plating in steel, making it effective against the supernatural in the same way magic is effective.

There was that thing about the snow prince's awesome state of the art armor being merely steel, showing there is some evolution in armour and smithing over the years.

As for water, there are lots of wells about the place. Food production, if I recall, is centred around production in the Niben valley and in Morrowind's eggmines. The eggs are supposed to keep a large portion of Tamriel's population from starving, I believe. Wonder why such a huge export wasn't even present in Oblivion?

ah yes I forgot about the book "Fall of the Snow Prince". Is there any indication in what era the battle took place? First? Second?

Maybe people in Cyrodiil don't like eggs, maybe they get grain and stuff coming in from other provinces.
