Technological Advances..

No.

I'm sorry, but advancing in technology is just quite boring, imo. Maybe a few scavenged Dwemer things, but nothing more.

Well in the TES there are a few reasons why technology has not advance. The exintion of dwemmer being the biggest one. And besides I dont want Tamriel in The industrial Revelution.

Yeah. If technology gets introduced, it'll be like Bioshock or Mass Effect, we can't have that!

I would acctept a rennisance type setting as long as thier is no guns and a good reason how they advance. Any further is a bad attempt at Fable.

I personally dont think that there would have been any significant developments within the world.

If you take into account that the land is in decline since the death of the emporer and skyrim is currently in civil war anyway.

But also the rate of advances only speeds up as time goes on, so like present day earth, what we have achieved in the last 50 years with regards to 3D, Mobile phones etc is far greater than what was achieved in the 100 years pervious and that was much more than the 200 years previous to that etc etc.

Also with Skyrim being a very Barbaric landscape and mentality, I think that progression would have been half the rate at which more civlised communities would have taken. Yes there will be elements of advances but nothing that is mainstream.

I wonder where you guys think that 200 years in civilization advance is relevant.
Europe passed more than half a milenium in the dark ages brought by [censored] cristianism.
Europe falled back to a semi barbaric state in most parts of it after the fall of Rome, being plagued by nords (vikings), population migration playing a domino like movement, unstable and full of great scale massacres.
It took a century an a half to recreate tech that where comon BC.
Agricultural advance took 1300 years just to find and disseminate crop rotation.
After the golden age of The middle ages where european cities where considered barbaric by the arabic civilization, up to today they are in most part retaining a medieval mindset with warlords, clan leaders and whatnot, fighting among themselves.

Bronze age, iron age, etc, all where more near centuries than anything.

And with magic healing and creation process, the probability of a fast technological advance is even less probable. Because what had to be fixed with ingenuity is fixed by magic.

Althought few adcancement should be plausible due to alchemy, weak explosive, weak acids and the like, i don t see much advancement beyond weaponry that would affect the game. And i don t want guns of any form in TES, keep them on the damned Fallout.

Not necessarily. People forgot how to make decent pottery when the Dark Ages came around. Certain situations can make the technology levels of a civilization drop.

And with deadly prophecies with dragons and daedra, yeah I see where this is getting at.

It kinda seems that the empire is going in the same direction as the roman empire (destruction) and the world is running straight into the dark ages which would mean that the world in some sense is devolving.

Not steam power
i do not want to see an industrialized tamriel
but maybe advances in architecture and new resources are available like they figured out how to use oil or something
or new materials for making weapons

Fable tried to make an industrialized world and it was horrible
the guns in fable 2 made the game a lot less fun for me
and fable 3 was just plain garbage

I was pondering on this for a while, and I was thinking after 200 years shouldn't Tamriel be like in terms of technology.. Advancing? Every Civilisation evolves we see it now, sure I don't want The Elder Scrolls 7 being in like a modern day New York style setting, but should we start to see more advances on for instance steam power?

Fantasy world, not required to parallel real world. That's why they call it "Fantasy," see? No advances, no steam power, no eventual guns, thank you very much.

Use oil for what? I wouldn't be surprised to find that oil is ALREADY being used in lamps, torches, pitch, shipbuilding, etc. BUT, do fossil fuels exist in TES? Does coal? I'm pretty sure methane or some other flammable gases exist.

There are steam power and cannons in TES lore. Just because a game is "Fantasy" doesn't mean that every one in the game has to walk around like cavemen with clubs and bows forever. Think of Star Wars, thats considered by some people to be more Fantasy then Sci-fi. In fact Sci-fi and Fantasy are often grouped together because they have similar themes and such. I'm not saying that TES should have more Sci-fi aspects, I'm just saying you can have technology in a Fantasy game and still consider it a Fantasy game. Just as you can have Fantasy elements in a Sci-fi game and still call it a Sci-fi game.

In fact, there is already plenty of technology in the world of TES. What everyone is quibbling over is where to draw the line. Which to me, is a matter of taste and not bound by limitations like magic usurping science. You don't need to make up a rule or argument like that to defend a truly subjective opinion. Because there is no "wrong," but there is a consensus on how the game should "feel" when it comes to the setting.

It's an interesting question; if tamriel was parallel to human history we should see some kinds of advances in terms of technology. On the other hand necessity is the mother of all invention, and since there is magic in tamriel they probably wouldn't have the same needs. Say we need to carry a heavy load to a higher elevation (like moving a sofa up 6 flights of stairs) we'd use something like an elevator, but in the world of the elder scrolls you can just pick up the item, cast feather and then levitate (or acquire enchanted items that have those effects).

The problem with TES is that they really only show people using magic to kill things. Theres little to no practical uses for magic in the games. This can led you to believe, at first glance, there are no practical uses for magic in TES universe. If the devs want to use magic as an excuse for not having huge scientific developments then they need to add more examples to explain why people prefer to use magic instead of science. This would not only help explain magic's role in TES it would also make the game more immersive, because you would get to see people using magic to better there every day lives, which would feel cooler then just having it implied that it's happening.

TES is sort of like Harry Potter's wizard society in that since everything is done with magic, technology is not needed. There will be some magical advancement, but no technological advancement.

Sickness is pretty much eliminated as a serious threat due to magic and alchemy in the TES world. Feather and teleportation spells would be quite useful for moving things. There are many more examples of useful spells in the world of TES.

Yes, but there peaceful uses are all implied. You should be able see someone actually using spells for something other then just killing people.

Aside from how it might effect the atmosphere of the games (for the worst, to my mind), the circumstances must also be taken into account. After the collapse of The Roman Empire, much of Europe was plunged into a Dark Age where they actuall regressed in their abilities, knowledge and technologies. Tamriel has suffered a much more severe form of imperial break down. An Empire that has collapsed, not solely due to things like over extention of forces, native rebellions and dwindling funds, but an all out assault from the forces of hell. If anything I would expect Tameriel to be more chaotic and rustic than they were when we encoutered it in Oblivion.

ya but the muggles have made technological advancements. so why cant the blacksmiths in TES get skilled and smart enough to invent new weapons (no guns or bombs tho) and other helpful items like grappling guns built into guantlets.

But TES doesn't have anything like Muggles who use technology instead of magic, sure there are people in TES that don't use magic but it's still very much part of thier society and if they needed to travel long distances or something could just walk down to the mages guild and use their services if they have the coin. Technological advancement just isn't part of their mindset.

As for technological advances, I did see some waterwheels in the gameplay trailer.

I think steam power could be ok, but only for the Dwemer.

Skyrim, to me, looks like the dark ages. if Oblivion was the Romans (ae architecture and guard armor), u may notice that the dark ages began when the Roman Empire began crumbling and falling apart. Id much rather have my nords looking apon the old empires mighty buildings and thinking "that must have been a good time to be alive, i can barley imagine the amount of power the old empire had..." I mean, skyrim looks dark-age kinda gritty, dirty in its feal. just how i look at it i guess

Edit: ops, didn't see that post above me... Well mine is different enough to warren my 2Cents
