Technology in skyrim

Post » Fri Dec 17, 2010 2:49 am

In morrowind there were ruins of the the technologically advanced dewmer and i heard that one of the major cities in skyrim was supposed to have been built by them. We have already seen that they have wind mills, what else? Mining elevators? Steam ships? Its been 200 years since oblivion after all, but all they were good at was building structures and castles. Think we might see any more advanced technologies in skyrim?

Hate to bring it up but... That bit about the steam boats just reminded me of the technological advancement between Fable 1 - 2... It wouldn't fit nor sit right with the fans of TES and TES setting

In a split second scene from the trailer, the character is walking down stairs in a dwemer ruin.

Dwemer ruins confirmed :)

Do you really want... steam ships?
...

I think things in general should be more rustic than in Cyrodiil. Your know, they are in some kind of Dark Age. I suppose we will find some cool, techological things in the Dwemer's ruins. We have already seen a Dwemer Centurion.

Personally, i dont wont too much technological advance from one game to the next. I like TES the way it is, outside of dwemer ruins dont want all that jazz. Plus it would obligate TES to incorporate it in a future game, something they may more may not want to do when the time comes to make another.

Also, doesnt really fit that Nordic, barbaric feel Skyrim is suppose to have.

They've already had parts of it in the Lore during Morrowind, I say let them expand on it. It won't be the theme of the entire game nor would it ruin the game unless they when balls out crazy with it.

Nords are not Dwemer.

Nords did not build Dwemer ruins.

Dwemer are gone and everything they knew.

Skyrim has been around since before the empire.

Much of skyrims cities are old as hell.

and only one city for some reason built by dwemers in the north western reach of skyrim is a dwemer ruin occupied by Nords......why there is a dwemer ruin so far from morrowind is beyond me.

why are they barbaric when they are one of the most powerful Provinces in Tamriel AND have/had a King ruler? I don't know why people think and or why Todd and company is advocating nords as being stupid backwater people which no technological advances when they have been around so long.

As WiselWiselman this will going to be some sort of dark ages. Technology will go down. It's already oficially said that this will be less technological.

You know, it is true that the Dwemer were technologically advanced, compared to everyone else. Unfortunately the Dwemer vanished, taking their knowledge with them. So far, it seems that no one has managed to pick it up or rediscover how it all worked. So I doubt we'll see that change in between Oblivion and Skyrim. Besides, it's only a modern idea that things must always progress. In a world steeped in magic, technological advancements probably take a back seat, leading to a culture that does not expect those sorts of improvements. They just look to their mages for the advances they need.

Skyrim borders to Vvardenfell, and the mountains on east Vvardenfell mainland and over the border should be full of them.

There weren't any borders around when the Dwemer were...

Also, like I said, there's definitely a Dwemer dungeon in the trailer.

When I was playing morrowind I plundered dewmer ruins for gears, cogs, and other contraptions. I guess the most importaint thing is that the game is fun, but Nords are humans right? So after 200 years since Oblivion techological regression seems kinda weird to me.

the empire is in decline.....per todd howard's interview: "After Oblivion, the Empire as it's known goes into a steep decline, and that's one of the main things that brings about some of Skyrim's conflict"

fall of empire =/= dark age. lots of the time civil unrest/war leads to technological advances.

Also, where's this official statement? i haven't seen it.

I think the progression of advancement in Nirn would move more towards high magic than high technology. Just my thoughts though. I do think there is a point where increased technological and magical advancement would really really hurt the setting. The low level of advancement could be explained with the occasional disaster leading to a darkage.

The fall of the Empire, the force that kept Tamriel united, cannot bring well. Wars and wars with no trace don't seem a good time for development, but maybe in war tactics and that kind of things. Life in general would be harsher, with some techonological regression due to chaos.

Perhaps you should go back and look at the Dark Ages, then we can talk about technological regression.

Besides, like I said, there may not be a culture that fosters technological advancement. The ancient Greeks invented a simple steam engine, but it was never more than an object of curiosity. No one ever developed the design or put it into practical use. Why? The most common answer that I've heard is that they didn't need it. Why take the tame to develop an engine when you have slaves aplenty to do the work for you?

Magic probably has much the same impact on Nirn when it comes to technology. Why take the time when magic can already do what's needed? Why develop a gun when a mage will do the job just fine?

fall of empire ======= dark age. no one of the time CIVIL unrest/war had leads to SIGNIFICANT technological advances.

One of the interviews to Todd Howard I think.

This has already been stated by Todd that even though Skyrim is set 200 years into the future, it'll have a more brutish feel so we won't be seeing "steam boats" (That would ruin TES)

We should keep in mind that great conflicts, like our world wars, have made us push the boundaries of our technological capability.

This, however, is a civil war. It's totally different.

There are no real incentive to technological growth in the world with magic. Who needs surgery, when you can visit a temple, brew some potion or learn Restoration? Who needs firearms and explosives, when you can conjure daedra and hurl fire? Lots of transport problems are solved by Mark-Recall and similar spells, et cetera.

I hate citing history. But it was like a thousand after the fall of the Roman Empire before technology advanced.
