Technology

Given that it's likely that this game takes place 200 years after oblivion, I'm wondering, how will technology develop?

Cause if it dosen't Imma be mad.

Er, why? What could you possibly want to have developed?

I'm more interested in the actual combat system as a whole being extensively improved upon from Oblivion. Having new technology like muskets/crossbows/etc isn't really a priority for me.

You got this info where?

We have no idea when the events in Skyrim will be taking place. It could be 3 years after the last game (like it usually seems to be), or it could even be 3 weeks for all we know.

Hopefully not at all.

It didn't work with fable and it won't with TES. If I wan't guns and technology I'll play fallout.

The problem with believable development is that an overwhelming majority of the talkative fanbase disapproves.
It is a business, after all.

EDIT: I was just repeatedly ninja'd. Among the posts above are numerous tear inducing excerpts I won't list. What has been seen cannot be unseen.

I believe when Bethesda first announced they were having The Infernal City written, the article (which was soon removed) also suggested the two books would bridge Oblivion and the next TES game (Skyrim). It also suggested the next TES game would be 200 years after Oblivion, but this was some time ago. As you stated, Oblivion takes place 6 years after Morrowind, so who really knows. Although it's probably safe to say Skyrim will take place after The Infernal City.

The novel, The Infernal City, sets the game up to be occurring 200 years after the events of Oblivion.
However, since my backwater Barnes and Noble hasn't gotten any copies in store, I haven't read it yet so I cant be certain, that's just what I've heard

He's getting the info from the fact that a lot of online book retailers originally listed the "Infernal City" with a summary that mentioned that the book takes place 40(?) years after Oblivion and sets the stage for the next game which takes place 200 years since Oblivion or something like that. Everyone quickly changed it. I think it's pretty likely for it to be true. Also, I'm pretty sure Solitude is better than Winterhold.

Technology in TES is extremely slow...the heck, after ~3000 years of TES history, metallic armor is used after leather armor or other hides. The dunmer were still (during MW) living in the 2nd era practically.

This is not the Fable series; just because time passes does not, in and of itself, imply that technology must advance. Indeed, the dwemer have a sort of "steampunk" (if you pardon the use of the term) technology going on, and there are many examples in Morrowind of "machines". That sticks to the lore quite well, thoughout going crazy. Lots of TES appropriate tech in the Lore.

I don't like it when hundreds/thousands of years go by with absolutely no advancement just to suit a stereotypical setting. It doesn't have to be much though.

Yeah. I just now realized it was 6 years. I really need to brush up on my lore.

I will say that just because Bethesda makes a statement doesn't mean that they have to abide by it. They're the creators of The Elder Scrolls, after all, so they have the main jurisdiction on what takes place when. So I wouldn't be surprised if they took back their previous statement and decided that Skyrim might take place before the events of The Infernal City. I guess we'll just have to wait and see if the upcoming Game Informer article has any info on when the game is taking place.

Not for my Dunmer Shadowmage. :P

Winterhold
A wealthy and influential county in Skyrim. It is heavily affected by Dunmer ways and ideas, being close to the border. It contains the Ysmir Collective, and the well known College of Winterhold. It is located in Northeastern Skyrim.

No. I can't picture a Khajit walking down the mountains of Skyrim or streets of a Bruma-like city with a AK-47. If you want amazing technology gameplay, Play FALLOUT.

This isn't reality. Humans may be bless/cursed with the need to constantly push and evolve technology but maybe Aragonians are happy with some frogs to eat, the Nords happy with some mead and the Bosmer's happy with their bow and arrows.

I come to TES to get away from reality.

Yep. If it's anything like the Oblivion issue of GI though, I wouldn't expect anything in terms of lore. That issue mainly focused on the engine, graphics, physics, combat, environments, radiant AI, etc.

I hope, and I expect, the technology of Skyrim will be very similar to that of the previous Elder Scrolls games. And for those who want technology to advance, look at our own human history, we went for thousands upon thousands of years with just swords, bows, leather and metal armors. From the ancient races, Egyptians, Assyrians, Babylonians, which date back well over 5000-7000 years. The concepts of firearms and industry have only been around for 600 years, industry even less. So it makes total sense for the world of the Elder Scrolls to remain "primitive." If the Lore permitted it, the world could even regress into a dark age...
